I just started a new digital podcast blog. I'll be doing this nearly every day at BluhmDigitalPodcast.blogspot.com (http://bluhmdigitalpodcast.blogspot.com) - feedback is always welcome. (ps- could someone explain to me how to get a thumbnail image on the thread page)
Here are the first two images. You can see the videos at the blog (http://bluhmdigitalpodcast.blogspot.com).

Sweet renderings! I'll take a look at the videos later on. For a thumbnail image just upload the image here at CA! And a question back, what do you find harder, doing realistic draings or caricatures?

Thanks for the info, Sarc.
I enjoy doing caricatures more, and find it to be more of a challenge. Portraits are challenging in their own way, and drawing realistically is great, but exaggeration takes a vision and more thought, if you plan on keeping a solid likeness.

Those videos really made me wanna go paint some caricatures. Solid technique and you seem to know exactly what to exaggerate.
With about 50 seconds left of the Tom Cruise video his right cheek loses some definition. I'm not really the one who should criticize, but it just looks unintentional.

The videos are amazing, I gotta try that soon!

Nisse- thanks, and don't be afraid to critique. His cheeks and around his eyes are something that I looked back upon as mistakes and rushing. I tried not to take TOO long on this, to keep it brief, and in doing so had to shortcut a bit. This left some problems and mistakes, but overall I'm getting a point across.
I think good critiques should be shared all the time. Don't hold back, and keep checking the new podcasts and giving new critiques.
I'll be doing these (hopefully) daily.

Nice work, Joe! The Tom Cruise looks really nice, and Kanye West is a decent quickie, I suppose. Don't be afraid to use some texture variation with these things. These two people don't have leathery faces or anything, but I think it would be more challenging for you and more interesting to us if you started slipping some different surfaces into your renderings. I say this because I could see this approach getting too formulaic for you if you keep these up. You expose yourself to a good cross-section of artists, though, so I'd say to just try injecting some of that juicy painterly mentality into these. Digital work doesn't have to use flat, homogenous strokes, so don't let it hold you back.
Keep it rockin', Joe!

Great job! So many people do timelapses but not many people take the time to actually share their knowledge. Thanks for doing this.

Andy-
Great tips. I'll start implementing some textures into my work, as well as using better brushes. My original plan was to go over my mindset and process in drawing a caricature.
To be fair, the Tom Cruise was my 4th video that I recorded, and for a number of reasons, I posted it first. My purpose isn't so much "digital" tutorials, but more about inspiring others to draw and to talk about my technique and thought process during caricature and sketching. Because I am using the digital medium, I can see that you are right. I'll expand the range of programs that I'm using, as well as employing more techniques and tools.
The overall sketch and application of the 'paint' is my focus, as well as this thesis:
Lots of artists sketch and "warm up" each day. Why not share that? Why not show what you are doing when you're warming up or winding down? Few do, and I'm hoping to inspire others to do the same.
Thanks for the kind words, all, and Andy- great tip, buddy. I love good, harsh, honest critiques, and I'll take them from anyone who cares. :)

Checked out the blog. Very cool. I'm always appreciative to any artist (especially very good ones like yourself) who are willing to share their processes. It's very fascinating and a great resource. Thanks a bunch and great work, man.

wow, those are some great vids. Great renderings. That is cool that you know Tom Richmand.
I have a question about that sebastion kruger, does he use airbrush in his paintings? They are really good.
Geuseppe
September 16th, 2007, 11:16 PM
Thanks, Albino. I feel that teaching or sharing is an integral part of growing, as an artist. Sharing what one has, will make that individual better.
Kruger never uses airbrush. He only uses Acrylic Paint, straight from the tube.
Amazing, I know. :x

Hi Joe, very cool vids. Fun to watch and listen.
However, I think you're mistaken on your comment regarding Santa Claus.

Thanks, Kaktuzlime. I've also got another caricature of Queens of the Stone Age front-man/ singer/ songwriter Josh Homme, with a progress video at BluhmDigitalPodcast.blogspot.com (http://bluhmdigitalpodcast.blogspot.com) - I'd love to hear some feedback.

really really nice stuff mr. bluhm. love the tom cruise, and dog. the kanye west is nice but i dont like the puffiness towards the back of the jaw. the puffiness around and under the bottom lip is right on tho. my jaw and lips puff out the same way. o and as you are pressing the alt key to color pick you are also pressing your brush size shortcut keys as well causing u to change layers. alt+[/alt+] change layers.
love the blog...

Thanks, Jason. Great tips.
I really respect your work, and am very appreciative.

You mentioned in one of the vids that the layers were somehow being changed and you weren't sure how that was happening and if anyone knew what was going on to write. i just figured that since your brush size hotkey is mapped to your intuos 3 keys, im guessing that you're somehow hitting them at the same time as alt somehow. you and your inspiring words and work got me messing around with caricature. i forgot how fun it is. thanks for sharing and inspiring.
Geuseppe

I've actually got the brush-size hotkeys and eyedropper hotkey programmed to the tablet, and I'm now sure that I must be dragging my finger across them both when that happens. I'm glad you're excited about caricature again. Very cool.

I got to your blog through your recent post on CGTalk and watched all your videos yesterday (bored at work :) ) I really love your style and your video podcasts are so inspirational to me. Please keep doing them because they give me a lot of artistic inspiration at my artistically-challenged quality assurance job ;D
I think I may get into caricature after watching your videos. My boyfriend even succumbed to my drawing a caricature him after I watched your videos. I hope to keep practicing and get to a professional level.
I'd love to do a podcast like yours once my skill level is to the point where someone would care to watch :D I wondered how you got the videos to play back to back so seamlessly on your blog? I'm no YouTube aficionado, so if there is a site that explains it, feel free to just shoot out a link :) Also curious how long one of these sessions last since you're wanting to do one everyday (that would be so awesome and make my day ;)), so how long does one of these take you including editing time? Do you use Fraps to record or some other program?

wow, these are great, and i just checked out your blog, very cool. i just have one question, you show the techniques and everything, but how come you never mention what brushes you use. i know its not simply the type brush that makes a good image, but i find that a lot of beginners have great drafting skills, but they totally mess it up when it comes to painting, mainly becouse they have no idea what brushes are best for a certain style. so can you please please explain whats your main brushes in your next image, :)

I'll talk more about brushes with future videos. My intention is to entertain and show the process from a drawing standpoint, but I'd be happy to expand the subject matter. :)

Love the Tom Cruise character lol. He looks more natural as a caricatures for some reason. Very simmilar to the old Spitting Image models and masks used in the TV series back in the 90's! Are you fammiliar with the show?
