hey thats pretty cool... i like the idea about a davinci-prop-podracer mixture. Me likey!

there are some minor perspective issues on the motor of the back-prop and on the wooden frame of the front prop.
But i donīt think thats too bad.
The thing that really came to my attention was the left wing... in comparision to the right wing it looks kind of small and out of proportion.
But other then that itīs pretty cool.

This is a tight one Sammy. I like the concept and the way you pulled of the effect for the prop really kicks ass.

I'll agree with el_kyrre about the "minor" perspective issues, but they are so minor it really makes no difference. The other small thing is...Wouldn't there be a sh!t load of wind in this dude's face?

this reminds me of this one arcade game where you have to paddle to propel your little glider and pop the balloons, does anyone else remeber it?

Very cool stuff. I'd love to see more variations.

They seem to hold potential for many more designs while staying true to a basic design/ mode of technology. Kinda reminds me of the many airship models from the FF series.

This is a pour out to my homey gasmask!

JonDaAzn - PropCycle, that's the game.. it's a great arcade game... one of the only arcade games I've beatin'.... too bad it doesn't exist anymore : (

don't they have that game at gameworks of seattle? ... maybe I'm wrong

anyway... the concepts look awsome, and I love the way that robot one is rendered

HAHA thanks for the shoutout man.....that robot is sick dude.....i really love the rendering and textures. How did u like the fridays and freddys? Lol

Wow. That is great. Color that with some earth tones with some sunset lighting and I'll be eternally grateful.

those flyers are real cool...

...I feel if the figure was draw equally as well I think !that would really impress people... Look at Syd Mead's figures..they tend to be on par with his environments... Some may argue that the concept really isn't about the figure... And I'm not saying HAve the greatest figure in each concept I think thats more Icing on the cake when trying to convey an idea...

thanks for sharing!

JOSHUATHEJAMES - yea I hear you on that one.. I'm tryin' to improve my people drawings.... .mostly I include a sillouhette of some simple person to reference size.. but it would be nice to get a little more detail in

Wow...these are great concepts. The rendering really shows a strong command of the medium. I like the Glider the best but all of them are really incredible. Excellent work.

I'm tryin' to slow down a little and focus a bit more... I usually try and rush as fast as I can and speed thru a rendering... This was about an hour

Thanx Jnorish, that means a lot :)

I can't take credit for just pulling these things outa my ass tho... it's all about the research and stupid little thumbnails..

Hey man, im really feeling the track ur on with ur thought process, and very accurate renderings man, i love this type of stuff, i think i love the thumbs the most, with ur finals tho, only thing id say is push ur values, seems like the rendering is too uniform, but in a way it makes sense for the view its in, but dont forget where the light source is. great work man

Jeff Gran

Awesome concepts man. I'm interested in your process. do you draw those lines back to a real horizon or just eyeball it and use those as ref for the rest? do you draw your straights with a ruler? do you draw your elipses with stencils? I always wonder how guys like you and feng and stuff always get such perfect perspective so fast. it would take me hours and days to get it so clean like that, especially in pen.

BTW, nice to see SCAD represent on here. I graduated last spring. What's your major?

sammy, what the hell happened. you dissappear for a month and come back with a vengence.. .. a fucking vengence. these ideas/concepts/renderings are all a jump from what i have seen you do before. ..these are really damn sweet.

peace

I want to redesign the Blue Falcon from F-Zero.. I love the design in the game it maintains that 80's cheese.. but I wonder what it would look like if the game was first conceived nowdays .. here's some thumb studies.. any suggestions??

http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/fzerothumbs.jpg

gasmask - thanx for the critique man. I've been inspired too much by D Chaing's low contrast sketches... should prolly put some darker values in there.. as for the thumbs.. I agree some were bettter.. I should've enlarged the good one and traced it for the form..

Jeff Gran - sometimes the perspective is eyeballed and sometimes measured.. and sometimes isometric... but it's quicker than you think.. I use elipse templates and straighedges.. thos make everything go quick too. I'm majoring in Industrial design.. you?

metalwinds - thanx.. I've been away practicing :) and doin' schoolwork..

Jeff Gran
August 27th, 2003, 06:13 PM
nice, man. f-zero kicks ass. these would be awesome in a game. I'm 3d animation/game design. But now I'm taking some drawing classes here in CA, actually I was thinking about taking some ID classes... I'm starting to think I'd rather be a concept artist than a 3-d modeller, as I originally planned.

hey, isometric...now that's smart thinkin. keep it up man, you rock.

I'm with gasmask on F-Zero #6, though I also really love the "Tie Fighter" wings on number 7. Perhaps combine the two? As has been said, excellent work all around. PLEASE post more stuff like the prop gliders. I really love designs of hi-tech machinery built with primitive materials.

This was a rejected design from a current project... I looove the design.. but in all honesty it didn't fit in the universe..

I drew it whilst I was working at the Toystore one day... this little boy, about 8 years old, loved it... he just watched me draw the whole time and never shoped for toys.. so this one is for you little dude!

Sketched on printer paper with a .5 stedtler pen...
http://www.securevirtualpages.com/~sammyha/onlineforums/heavyscoutline.jpg

Xeroxed onto marker paper, splattered with tria refill ink... blocked in the warm color, jet light source, and sky lightsource... and basically went crazy with highlights.. fun stuff..

Thanx for the input on the F-Zero guys.. I'll get more thumbs posted!

PencilPunx - I'll do more steampunk stuff like the gliders.. but I've run dry on ideas... any suggestions??

Based on the work in this thread I find it hard to believe that ideas are anything you'd run short on. Hmmm, suggestions...Have you ever heard of/played a game called Dark Cloud 2 for the PS2? The main character is a mechanic and he builds "ride pods" (basically mechs) out of household items (vaccum cleaners, refrigerators, phonographs, etc.). I think you'd dominate such an assignment.

In case you have no idea what the hell I'm talking about: DC2 Official Site (http://www.us.playstation.com/games/scus-97213/)

Just an idea, no pressure!:blah:

good call PencilPunx - I got about 25 hours in on that game - Sounds like a good assignment
(In the game I especailly like the styracosaurus skull on front of the train)

it's those little thumbnails that keep the world spinning.

good solid style, the glider has a very practical feel to it. like i could build it in my garage out of old washing machine parts and raggedy toothbrushes.

Unknown Target
September 4th, 2003, 02:29 PM
Wow!
*eyeballs pop out of head*

But what are the parts on that mammoth? The only part I can see is the head. Are the others close-ups of something, or am I just dumb :D

Sammy
September 4th, 2003, 08:17 PM
wow.. my old thread comes back,

Unknown Target - All the sketches of the Mammoths are of the skulls in that particular sinkhole... it's obviouse on the ones with tusks...

The lower left one is the maxilla of the upper jaw..

the things that look like shoe bottoms are the mammoth's cuspid teeth

Thanx guys, I gots more in my daily sketchbook thread... I was gonna leave the Mammoth sketches as my swan-song for this thread.

"The next Feng Zhu" WOW.. thanx dude .. I've learned everything about markers from my Industrial Design marker rendering classes... but one of my biggest influences on my work has always been Doug Chaing .. so I guess I'm developing a similar style..

Wow! I had no idea this thread got so big. What a re-find!

Sammy: Your stuff kicks major ass dude! Obviously I've seen a few of your works prior, but man you're really good. If only I could draw tech stuff like that. I'll be checking back for updates.

BTW: I was lookin' at your dino sketches... have you checked out Wayne Barlowes stuff, I have a couple of his books, he's super talented. I think you'd really dig him.

Sammy
September 5th, 2003, 06:25 AM
Uh oh.. hehe I hope I'm not obligated to keep this alive.. hehe got enough work with that sketch thread I got goin HA

Thanx Chromo,
Wayne Barlowe rocks.. he's deff one of my fav paleoartists.. my fav book of his is Expedition.

BUT his inferno book is being made into a movie! and he's the director! .. the production company is called Morpheus and I think a friend of his started it.. .so we can expect it to be true to the book..
which would be cool 'cause it would be a documentary!

September 5th, 2003, 09:44 PM
wow sammy first time i seen this thread of urs.. now i see what ur saying in the skinny mechs with the joints and stuff.. when i was thinkin .. i dunno i was thinkin more along the lines of a hydrolic controlled leg or whatever but i dunno.. i see how that would do better.. i dunno this drawing block it killing me .. everything i draw turns out liek crap now.. and all of my guys are lookin the same .. which isnt good ha... but great work .. now i got a better idea of what u were talkin about before! :D
