Here's a photo of mine (http://www.necrisque.net/misc/DSC_0015.jpg) next to my 20" iMac, for inspiration. It's an Intuos A3 Widescreen and it's too large for my screen.
What size tablet / wallet(after buying) you're more comfortable with is subjective. I got this because I think it's nice having a 1:1 ratio between my physical lines and the lines that show up on the screen, without having to zoom in/out.
Turned out I had to constrain the area to do that D:

On the Wacom site, you can find out yourself what tablet will be a good fit for you!
It's all about the size of your stroke - if you have wide strokes a larger tablet will work and so on.
Wacom Tablet Selection Tool (http://www.wacom.com/tabletwizard/index.cfm)
(and pardon this post if you're already aware of this. :) )

Not trying to be a hater or anything, but there have been like 4 different stickied threads about tablets and like a million posts about them, there has to be a way to get people to notice the search bar..
