yes we all have to do more evironments i admit i havent really done.. any yet :).
your evironments seems to be going well.
btw i meant to ask you for painting do you suggest oils or gouache or anything really and just practice at it or what :). I am really new at painting ;)
daarken
August 23rd, 2003, 02:28 PM
endregan: well, it really depends. i think you should experiment with all mediums to see what suits you best. gouache dries really fast, so you can do paintings in no time. plus u can get really saturated colors...although i have problems with that, haha. oils are great, they are my fav. they take a lot of practice i think, so you should definitely try doing some oil paintings. painting in pastels is awesome too.

BTW, is your stuff still up at villians? I haven't had a chance to get out there yet.

August 24th, 2003, 05:58 AM
wow, great work. i really love those paintings - especially the way how the red splatter on the last one makes the person in the foreground stand really out.
the sketches are very cool, too, though. how long does it take you to finish one of these pencil faces?
by the way, i notice a lot of very "flee floating" lines around your sketches, especially in the last 2 sketches these are pretty evident. what are these? did you try out different poses with these before deciding on a final one? but if so, why are the lines so unconnected and flowing?
daarken
August 25th, 2003, 01:48 AM
golgari: thanks! um..the faces are only a few minutes. i like to just start out with moving my hand around...as jon would say i have a busy hand. haha. or i start out with some abstract shapes, and then move into the actual drawing. or to just keep things more loose...i dunno, heh.
tedsuo: yeah, they will be up there for probably 3 and a half more weeks.
atmospheria: thanks, here u go!

man, that last one is great. i like that technique, and i absolutely love it how you drew her face, with that expression and half the face fading away into the darkness.
her blade looks a little strange, though. it looks so extremely shapey-flat...don't know how to fix that, though. maybe try to put a reflection on it? (by adding a white stripe, you know?)

in all seriousness, this is one of the sweetest fucking pictures i have seen. the style still looks heavily influenced by hawkprey, but you seem to be taking it to a different level.. .which is awesome. my only crit is that its back could use a couple more values to push out the form.

hell yeah, this rocks bigtime.
makes me want to dig some old hp-lovecraft-books again ;)
i like the way you created 3-dimensionality with those tentacles just by changing the shape of them all throughout their flow. partly i can see your strokes too much, though. especially in the face area. one always looks for a face and because here you don't really have a face, one closely examines the area where it's supposed to be, so that's why the strokes catch your eye there. also, maybe be a bit more careful when using the white small strokes to make things recede. it works very well for putting them in the background, but if you're making it too regular (like for example, his "left main arm" - the arm in the middle) it also emphasizes the shape, making it flat. maybe try adding a few light, white strokes in the direction of the flow of whatever you're working on, in order to maintain it's plasticity...
daarken
August 31st, 2003, 04:41 AM
golgari: thanks! yeah, i am always very interested in the brush strokes of things. i do that on purpose..and i do have a face, in fact i have two head on there. here is a detail of the two faces. yeah i understand about the arm looking too flat, but i dont really want to show that much form on it, i just want to give an indication that there is another arm there, and that its not a focus. but yeah, i totally understand what u are saying, thanks!
metalwinds : yeah i added a little bit more value...maybe still not enough though.
so here is the detail of the two heads...oh yeah, his jaw is off center on purpose too.

the tentacles/things coming off the back of the dood is very good. your style is crazy cool :). i dont know how to describe it, its like defined but not. you certainly have taken your hawk influence to a new level and i love this pic!!!!!

hmm, strange, i didn't see the faces before. now that you've posted a close-up, i can't help but to see them immediately in the original picture, too. when i looked at it the other time, i was sure as hell that there were no real heads, just strange blob-kind-of-things. oh well, perception's a strange thing ;)

I just stumbled accross this today.....because of the image size of your posted drawings and the blackness of their line, they almost appear like etchings. I esspecially like the fate sketch from 7/21. I want to see more graphite work like the gas mask and enviornment drawings from 7/22. Very cool!

Hi daarken,
These new designs and styles are heavily influenced. Like the last 1, it's almost identical to Eva unit 1's design. I think the line between being influenced by some one and rip off from that person becomes pretty blurry, given there are so many different styles out there. I remember how much your self portraits shocked me, how important that little touch of red on the nose and ears became... All artists experiment with different things in order to move on, so I hope you can continue developing your originality while improving. Cheers.

damn daarken. some very nice work here. your "busy hand" is what I want to start trying to do with my work eventually, although I think I might need a more solid understanding of anatomy before I can get it to work for me. :)
I've always admired your self portrait paintings. Now you've made me a huge fan of your pencils! I love pencils. Hey are you taking classes at an Atelier or are you attending college/uni right now?
There is a small Art Academy that looks Atelier-ish here in Vancouver, I'm going to take a few classes there. also thinking of taking classes at the Atelier in Seattle, only 2.5 hour drive. would be ok once or twice a week I think.
I also plan on taking classes at one of the Universities here. just wondering on your take. What's your background? :)

I like the guy with his head up against the wall. He seems to tell us a story about him. He's a criminal or a fugitive. But we dont really know. I chose that one, cuz when compared to the rest, they don't have such an impact(story wise) as the guy with the suit.
