all my life i've dreamed of being an animator, and my plans were to go for traditional 2-D animating, but i'm not really sure if it is that great of an idea nowadays...should i instead go for digital stuff???? or would it be a good idea to go for both???

Almost everyone there are professionals in the animation industry and they can give you a lot of insider knowledge and career suggestions.

2D animation is not, nor will it ever be,dead. It's just 3D is popular right now. Don't worry about just sticking to 3D. Practice both. As with any job, the more skills you have and versatile you are, the more important you to that company.

a fellow student of mine majored in 2d animation...

he was damn good..
landed a job rigging and animating 3d for a game... not just a job like head of animation

they realized how well he knew animation.. they knew it would apply to ALL animation

It doesn't matter a whit if you like animation: just do it if your passion is there.

Let me put it this way: if you're a Pixar, an ILM, a Digital Domain, or a WETA, do you expect folks to know your proprietary tools? Hell, no - how could you, if they're freakin' proprietary! :)

If you want to hire a great animator - 2d or 3d - you hire the gal or guy with the sense of humor, a gift for acting, and a knack for drawing and otherwise visualizing motion.

Any company can teach an animator the tools. NO company on EARTH wants to teach an animator how to be an animator.
