NIGHTMARE OF THE WEEK #5

TOPIC:
God Took A Picture Of His Illness On This Ground

Rules:
You know them by now.
Use your own new artwork.
Don't cheat.

This topic is inspired by a song of a band called Ghost. Well, this is not much of a song. It's 13 minutes of hissing, rattling and ghastly voices...
But the title of the song made me think. There is some weird poetry in it...
I reckon this will be a disaster actually... But then again we had some complaining about horror not always being "gory and cheap" and I think it's time to make you all think about something less literal and reach within the dark part of your souls. There is something evil about it. Something creepy. Something that might be a good starting point to creating a very scary picture indeed.
It's up to you how you aproach it. Environment? Character? Maybe a mixture of both? Think you have to make something that will represent sadness contained in those words, not nessecearily from the religious point of view.
This is going to be a difficult one, I know. Let's think of it as a sort of the experiment. If it doesn't work out we'll move on to something else. But then again- if it works out we have a chance of creating something great here!
I hope this makes sense...
Deadline: 20th September

Sounds interesting and difficult too hehe. Never saw a topic like this coming, so what is the deadline for this?

Grim Reaper

Added deadline.

I dont think its that difficult of a topic, I've been doing music to art for a while. I got an image of what Im doing for this.

wow, this is very open project.

Grim is this the actual title of the song? or is it called something else, becouse i would realy like to here it to get some ideas. Great topic btw, something to realy get the brain cells ticking.

Manuel_Calavera

Interesting. It's like making a cover for some music album or a book. It's important not to cheat on this one: to make something aiming directly on this topic, something from inside of your hearts or from the darkest parts of your souls.

is ghost doom by any chance?:P

grenogs
September 5th, 2007, 10:22 AM
sounds something similer by the band strife, they got a song around the same length, no lyrics or real musical instruments, just industrial sounds like cogs and chains, a few moans and groans here and there, basicly if evil had a sound, this would be it. maybe i should just listen to that for inspiration

Oni Rem

cool i go an image brewing in my head...at least i think...O_O

Brilliant topic, and a lot of info to be had with a line like that. With a deadline for the 20th I think my slow ass might be able to participate.

Gah! I am take things to literally to even understand the topic :P

Band: Ghost
Song: Hypnotic underworld 1) God Took A picture of His Illness on this ground

That's in case someone wants to download it...but it's not that important really. It's the title that's good. Song is just a bit like soundtrack to silent hill.

OMG,did u mentioned silent hill :D :D .....that was a mistake man :D,cause i think i now got a perfect idea what to draw...

grim, i know this is totally out of topic, but how did you creat this thread, did you need to contact a moderator or anything?

Grim Reaper
September 6th, 2007, 05:40 PM
Paradoxba- I'm a big Silent Hill fan, finished all the games more then once. I wish we could create here something at least close to images from Silent Hill...Damn Japs, they are geniuses when it comes to psychological horror!
Grenogs- nice avatar! You look just like I imagined you:) You can create your own thread in activities section if you want without asking anyone for permision. Just click on New Thread.

Maestro Andres
September 6th, 2007, 05:45 PM
Grim Reaper, yeah man, I second what you said about Silent Hill. That thing is just wicked and have no idea how they came up with those things. The textures and monster design, it's very astonishing. I am a fan too of the games, but never beat anyone of them so far. IMHO, silent hill is a lot scarier than the RE games. Actually, when I heard of this activity, I was thinking on doing something that matches the visual of Silent Hill :) We should be able too, somehow...

Grim Reaper
September 6th, 2007, 07:38 PM
Well, the thing with Resident Evil is that it plays so well and it's always fun shooting zombies and stuff but they always blow it with cheap monsters and bosses so in the end it looks like some manga-style masquerade...It might change though with next RE which introduces 'black' zombies which look genuinely scary.
BUT Silent Hill has always been number one. Your hero wasn't a trained soldier of some non-existing special unit. It was always some ordinary bloke (or girl in SH3) who was just as scared as the player. It was scarier and deeper, because it could happen to anyone...

grenogs

God Took A Picture Of His Illness On This Ground
http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o27/kurwakurwakurwa/NOW5titles.jpg

" There is a kind of illness that dwells within. When your soul is ill nobody thinks there's anything wrong with you...but the demons inside you scream in your head ripping you apart. Then you're trying to face that sadness, that unbearable pain and you can only do it on your own, because no one else would understand would they? If only they could see..."

Maestro Andres

Noooooo! Grim Reaper, I have a similar idea like yours! Now I guess I will try doing something different :)

Nice job by the way, the ghostly being is nicely done but I think you shouldn't crop it on the last guy's face. It will be more intense if you see the face screaming in pain or something, just an idea.

Ok guys, heres mine-
done on a more personal standpoint than say...the whole world but, it might be directed towards many of us.

Here I tried to show what the illness of the world is, mainly the seven deadly sins (minus a few) ;
The woman representing Lust, she holds a cup of wine which represents vice.
The head of the monster towards the bottom represents wrath/anger which burns deep inside and as hot as coals.
The ram/human head represents pride, head held too high.
The lion head yawing, represents sloth, laziness and procrastination theres a reason I put that one in there...but I'll tell you tomorrow.

C+C welcome guys

JLAlfaro: very nice and very symbolical. Your concept reminds medieval drawings on dark magic books and manuscripts but made in modern way and well painted. Would you mind if I use it as a design for a tatoo I'd like to have on my back ? ;)

Thanks man, and...are you sure you want that tattooed on you? idunno man, you can have it for whatever but...tattooed? I was actually gonna suggest the design for your topic header- remove the girl and beast and you can drop in the rules and guidelines in there. gimme your email address and I will send you the PSD.

Manuel_Calavera
September 11th, 2007, 10:52 AM
JL, take it easy ;) Deadline is marked at 20th so we have plenty of time. I haven't started my entry yet. I have some idea but still can't figure how to make it. I would like to try some diffirent style - black and white ink maybe...

grenogs
September 11th, 2007, 11:37 AM
manuel, you should try b&w or some other monochrome, you can get some nice effects with light and shade by using it. Mine was supose to be b&w, but i found a red monochrome layer ontop was more suitable for the image.

Maestro Andres
September 11th, 2007, 12:20 PM
The deadline is the 20th??? Awesome, somehow I had in my mind it was this thursday. That's good, I haven't even start working on the real submission, just some sketches...

grenogs looking good man. Having the skeletons like that, really makes it more interesting. The sprinkle effect is good too. I don't know about the raindrops, comparing the scale, they look kinda big, like falling rocks, but that's just being picky.

JLAlfaro Nice typography done for the piece and nice concept as well. Can't think of any critique right now, gotta take off now...

JL.Alfaro
September 11th, 2007, 12:34 PM
The 20th???? dude, what happened to the "of the week" part?...
shit man, in that case Im going back and reworking some of the stuff I didnt like.

maybe... or maybe a new image...hmmm.

armaldon- the type font is from www.dafont.com, its called something vinyl, and the one going around, is called "Turbo Ripped" -very fun stuff to play with. Just make sure you pay your dues if you use it for professional use.

grenogs
September 11th, 2007, 12:35 PM
thanks armaldon, much appretiated, to be honest i hadn't even considered the size of the rain, my only excuse is the large rain is in the foreground, so thats why it appears large, ;). Thet werent suppose to be rain, it was supose to be blood raining down, but i couldnt get the blood effect to show enough, becouse of all the red and grainy effect in the background.

Grim Reaper
September 11th, 2007, 12:55 PM
Well it's activity of the week only by name. In fact we can't afford to do this weekly until we get audience as big as CHOW and COW, but we're getting there slowly:)
Grenogs- I love the redness of it and the fact that it somehow looks like landscape of hell...All those skulls and crosses flipped upside down...Nice.
JLalfaro- I think it'd be brilliant to use this as the topic header picture. Of course that wouldn't eliminate it from this round. It's a great image. Send it to me if you want:
mremigiu@aol.com
Or I suppose I can just copy it from the link.

grenogs
September 11th, 2007, 01:06 PM
thanks grim, its not exactly hell, but that is the sort of feeling i wanted

Ostrander
September 13th, 2007, 02:32 PM
It's just my opinion, and by no means am I trying to invalidate using J's image for the NOW logo. But why not hold a contest for it? Like what was done for COW and CHOW? Then you would have a vote for the best/most well liked image and go from there. You might also want to post an invite every couple weeks or so for NOW in the lounge where most traffic seems to build up. I'm sure before long you guys will have the interest you're looking for. :rendered:

Just a thought.

Best,
Glen

Very nice work so far. Soon we will be closing this one.
Oni Rem- I like the complexity of your drawing. There's so many characters there and they're..ZOMBIES- which is always nice. I just wish there was more contrast to it. But still-it's good!
Qbertp- interesting, different aproach. There's something incredibly sad about your picture. In a good sense of course:)

Anyone else joining? Manuel, where's yours?:)

Thanks Grim. I wasn't sure it would be gory enough. I like all kinds of horror movies and games(yay for silent hill) but I think true horror and the stuff of nightmares is the stuff that leave you feeling hurt and sad. Being scared is a rush. Being depressed by something is just horrible.

I was trying to think of some illness God could have and finally found one. He’s old. And this might be the only thing He couldn’t change. So he took the picture of his illness on this ground…
This one is still WIP. This should be world of old and dying people. Still I must add more old people on the street and fix some shadows and lights.

ostrander nice image, but where are the ants, you need some ants or even a scorpion

manuel quite an interesting image, i like how you have added the buildings, the one nearest on the right looks a little odd though, i think you should have first flipped it and then foreshortend it, at the moment the windows look backwards, as the shadow areas are on wrong side. Also try and tone it down to match all the other buildings. Also why not add photos of people in it, and make it into a matt like image. Apart from that, its looking good so far

Ah, nice one Manuel. I like how you blended rendered buildings into the drawing...or the other way around. And a good idea too. What this picture needs now is details and it's gonna be pain in the ass to add them I think...but you need to make windows look slightly different.
Then I looked closer and I see that you've already done left side. Lovely. If you spend as much time with the right side as you spent with left one it's going to be a truly lovely image!
