WOW!
What are these done with? I couldn't tell at first if they were photographs, or drawings. Can you show us step by step how u did this?
Once again, I am amazed!

Thanks for the compliment. The tree study and the church with the cars in front of it are done with charcoal on a german paper called nidegeen. The other is an intaglio print. Many steps in that one. The others are just drawings. I approach both in the same way, so in the end there really isn't much difference. I would really like to do some environments.

Oh my! That first one is stunning! The other two are also brilliant. But that first one is just awesome!
For the love of art... go and do some environments ;)

I agree, excellent stuff! I'd like to see more as well as a step-by-step, no matter how long.
The dark framing compositions of the churches are what I like best. Really good positive/negative work with the leaves that overlap the tree branch.

Ok, I'll try to explain the ingaglio.
1. Started with great refrence. The picture was of the Duomo Santa Maria Della Pace in Rome when they were in the process of cleaning it. Thats where the dark quality started from. Pollution from all of the vespas i guess. It's all cleaned up now. The composition was right there in front of me because it's framed beautifully by the surrounding buildings.
2. I coated a zinc plate with a soft ground, which never fully dries. Then put vellum on top of it. Next I Drew on the vellum. The pressure from the pencil(2b) lifts the ground, and exposes part of the zinc surphase underneath. It went into the acid bath for about 15 minutes, brushing away the bubbles about every 5.
3. Now I had what looked like a pencil sketch. Next a few hard ground states. Hard ground is thicker and you need a stylus to get through it. I added a few states of line work to solidify it some.
4. Next came a spraypaint aquatint. If you spray a 50% coat on the clean plate, You get a different kind of ground that gave me the sky texture. There's many small steps of masking to get different levels of value.
5..Next came burnishing my white areas and tweaking the tonal transitions. The smoother the plate is, The more white it will be when wiped.
6. The printing process is another story I won't get into because I'm running out of room. I hope this helps. Ed
