edmiglia: nice but you might want to define the hands/fingers a bit more especially the right one. Oh and perhaps a more vivid red might be more 'punchy' :) Is it finished ?

No, it's not finished. I plan on adding the feet and tweaking the color based on the suggestion. Thanks.

Now how is it that I can be inclined to believe that you didn't again copy the pose like you did the your last piece?

i love it ..there's something dynamic about the linework! Do you think her right(our left) knee/leg is confusing? maybe twisted.

August 21st, 2003, 09:31 PM
Because I'm good enough, Shadowdancer.(cheesy even typing that. think about a new name.)
Why don't you take a look at my site.

edmiglia

Yeah scott, the right femur is too long, and twisted a bit, now that you pointed it out.

I think we can lay off this guy already, i think he gets it. geez!
but i like this one better anyway :) just the hair trips me out
and something about her right arm not contrasting enough with her leg...looks weird.

Maybe he does, ljefe, but "borrowing" from other people's work is such a serious issue. We may have been ragging in edmiglia a lot; it's only because we care enough to keep a fellow artist from making a serious mistake. It's rough out there, and we all have to look out for each other.

Edmiglia, this is better than the other piece. You may want to study anatomy some more. A good idea is to try and find a person who will pose for you so you can try to get the basic outline right. You could also do this using photos. There are a lot of excellent links in the Reference section.

I really like your line work. :)

Edit: I looked at your picture again and I have another suggestion. Since this isn't a finished piece, I would go to the Reference section in this forum and look at some pictures of guns. Your basic shape is okay, but you need to put in more detail so it doesn't look like Elektra is holding a piece of cardboard.

i realize you probably ran out of paper before getting to the feet, but i would suggest pencilling out a skeleton of the entire figure before fleshing it out. If you are missing feet it's confusing because it's harder to tell where she is in space, also it leads people to infer that you have trouble drawing feet. I've seen people draw a hundred figures and always manage to hide the feet. Even if you're having trouble with feet, the only way to get better is to draw them, even if you're not happy with the finished result. That is, after all, the point of this forum. To help people iron out the wrinkles in their work. this may or may not be the case, but good advice all the same. Nice work. I like the simplicity of the minimalist hands and gun, but it doesn't match the more detailed arms, torso, face and especially contrasts the line-heavy hair. Just keep unity in mind when desiging the figure. The simplistic hands on an otherwise detailed figure also leads people to believe you have trouble with hands/fingers. Same rule as above. Hope this helps. Good work. Keep hacking away at it.

flat.

And if you say it's not finished yourself why not post in WIP section?

shadowdancer
August 22nd, 2003, 12:37 PM
I agree with Daniela, and at the same time, I agree with Erik.

We do have to watch out for each other. I don't mean to put you down, Edmiglia, but you do have a long way to go from saying "Because I'm good enough, Shadowdancer".

Your drawing skills are better than most people, but you really do need to work on the anatomy, and coloring aspects of your works. Erik is right, this piece does look flat, and should be in the WIP section. As many of the other people have critiqued, you need some references, and you need to follow those references.

If you want to pass it off as stylized, then you need to look at your line quality and pose dynamics. I would consider works such as "Danger Girl" and "Chobits" to be stylized.

Here's a piece I did back in '98 of Lara Croft. Check out the gun!

Very nice. Glad to see you still posting Elektra.

edmiglia
August 22nd, 2003, 08:17 PM
I didn't even know there was a refrence section. I assume that if an artist uses a photo as refrence, there will be credit given to the photographer. I'll be watched from here on out, so you all understand. I just didn't like the insuiation of malitious intent. Ok. I'm done.

PS-since I've got so much attention for the wrong reasons, Look at my architecture too. I would like some feedback on them.
I explained the process of the intaglio if anyone is interested.

I think the picture is cool, and I think a lot of people in this thread are hating for stupid ass reasons.

Shadow dancer, what was the point of posting your vector looking lara croft on edmiglia's thread anyway?

By the way all the electra stuff ive seen does look flat. Its the style of the mag.

Shadowdancer> I'm not one to judge easily, but: lay off the cheesy Photoshop filters! That lensflare makes my eyes bleed! (not to mention the motion blur...) And why do you post your own work in someone else's thread?

edmiglia> I don't know about you 'borrowing' poses, but hell, you draw better than me and I like your work! Though you might have posted it in the sketches section.

Everyone is on their hind legs with this Chris Lunyon or magipen (I guess that's the cause) or whatever this guy's name is, but if ya can't use other's work for reference inspiration, how can you learn what you want? It's a totally different thing than blatantly stealing someone's work.

Flat, not dynamic enough, weird hair, her face looks like an old womans, her right hand makes no sense, her right leg is bending in an inhuman way. Not sure if this is becoming a new style or something, but its not my bag. And yet this post has over 20 replies.(I know...I just added one)
And it's odd, because a lot of the stuff on your site is pretty good. Sorry to sound bitter, but keep practicing.

Yo Chromo, was there actually a critique in your last post or was it you just hating on the picture? There is something called constructive critisism and whats expected to be used here. Opinions are are fine, but the do absolutely no good for helping this guy improve. Dick.

DUAAAA!!! I'm blind!!!

Hey, I drew this back in 98. Heck, I didn't even know what layers were back then. Cut me some slack with that. The point I was trying to make with that drawing was that references do make a difference, and stylizing versus pose copying. That's all I was trying to point out. I'm not trying to show off my work or something. (okay.. maybe a little :P)

Because I'm good enough, Shadowdancer.(cheesy even typing that. think about a new name.)

That is pretty childish.

The hand holding the knife dosent make any sense, it looks unatural. I agree with whats been said about the head and hair. I dont think it looks like Elektra either.

You gonna make fun of my name too now?

August 25th, 2003, 07:21 PM
Last time Im defending this guy.

Pencil Soldier: First of all its not a fucking knife she is holding. Didnt you ever watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?! Its called a sai and the hand thats holding it makes perfect sense. her thumb is wrapped around it. Use your imagination. Anyway, this is his interpritation of Electra so who gives a shit if it looks just like her!

thanks jens

Nardfrog--While I appreciate your concern for my ability to criticize constructively, I don't think that you should be too worried about the posts other people are saying. Just simply for the sake of this not even being your thread. You come in here and try to put on the presence of a moderator. Mind yourself, please. This crit was not for you, but for the thread starter.

And on a side note... I offer up my opinions to many members of this forum and others, I think my opinion is valuable in some way or another. Because, I can look at a picture, give it a good deal of thought and give a good critique.
When somebody posts something like this in the finished section, especially after seeing other peoples work, it's not really worth the time to come in and put a whole lot of effort into an image. Thats why the crit was quick and to the point. I will admit to being influenced by the amount of replys this thread got, I was a little fired up, but that really shouldn't be any of your concern.

Edmiglia---I really do like most of the stuff on your site, I can tell you have real talent. There were a multitude of reasons for my post, as I told nardfrog. So...please don't take it personally, and sorry I came off as an ass.

I can't believe that this one is getting so much attention either. You guys were right about some things.

1. The section that it's in
2. And that hand holding the sai. what the hell was i looking at?

my next post will belong in the finally finished section, although I may post it in work in progress to get some advice.
Thanks for the posts, nardfrog and for the compliments by Cannibal80, and Chromo48.

I'm usually not this savage, but you really deserve this: "You're work is "cheesy" and "tacky". I've seen it in countless places before you started to draw. Most unoriginal. Edmiglia is in another league altogether, and we shouldn't even be wasting our time with you and your uneducated remarks. Edmiglia is a REAL artist. Fine. Alot of potential to be truly great !!! Edmiglia: Keep posting your work and just ignore you-know-who !!! LOL:cool:

nice charcole drawings on your site....

the hand holding the knife would be more handlike if you suggested the thumb and finger with a few marks.

there is nothing wrong with flat images....they can be about shape and placement as well as content....

keep pushing....these guys are like dogs on a rabbit....some of the crits should be helpful.
