View Full Version : Stylized Animal Challenge - Sep 2007 - HYENA
ArcticBarbecue
September 3rd, 2007, 03:50 AM
Welcome to the Stylized Animal Monthly Challenge, sponsored by Zoo Publishing Magazines and 3DTotal. Please post all images & questions in this thread.
What is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select an animal and post some images as reference. All you have to do is create a 2D Painting of this creature in a stylized / abstact / cartoon style whilst keeping your creature instantly recongnizable. We wanted to publish some content in 2DArtist Magazine on how to create stylized animals such as you see in the many feature films and cartoon galleries. We thought this regular competition might bring in just theimages/making ofs we need whilst giving away great prizes and exposure. If it's a success we will start to boost the prizes up as much as possible!
What are we looking for?
Funny and humourous entries which break the animal down to its most recognizable components, enphasize these in whichever ways you think best and render your stylized/abstact/cartoon masterpiece.
Timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back, please submit 1 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background, include some graphical elements or text on your image its up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in. 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). There will be 1 comp per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. For a valid entry, just make sure your final image is posted in the main competition thread before this time.We require the top 3 winners to submit 'making of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com), these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text, of why and how you did what you did. We will format this into some nice looking pages to give you some great exposure and us some quality content.
Posting Works in Progress
Each competition will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs give feedback and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month.
Please dont start any new threads!, Just reply to this one already set up.

I started to work on my hyena. This is what I've got so far.
Edit:
I had some time so I started to add some color on that fellow. Also made the head a little smaller.
Don't hesitate to write some C&C ;)

I think the only land animals any weirder than a hyena are the platypus and echidna
I have never seen platypus and echidna before, so I did a google images serch....and see what I found!!! They are acesssssssssssss!!
Maybe this will be something for next month competition, maybe?

I live in Melbourne, and Platypus are the almost non existant, they are the hadest things to find. Echidnas on the other hand are easier out in the country. I love echidnas....but I can't eat a whole one. :rendered:
Platypus would be better to draw I think.

Thanks guys. :) Updated mine a bit above.
ScaryPotato: I like 'em both! And I see what you mean with the skull, had some similar ideas before. I probably prefer that one, but I'm not really sure. :P
cakeypigdog: Haha, I love your sketches. :) Can't you just make them all? I'd hate to see some of those go to waste.
gnahz: It's a cute one, but when it comes to that kind of lineart I've always preferred a harder type of shading. Still, that's just my personal opinion.
Chuck, mate.: You have no idea how much you inspire me, man. :) Just keep doing your thing. Hope you'll finish it!

And one more thing - the hyenas posted so far are incredible!
Juan Caruso - these are so cool! I especially love the third on top, the middle one in the right column and the one with the kid.
Chuck, mate. - you're probably tired of people telling you how amazing your work is so I'm not gonna ;)
Einen - great stuff, man!
ScaryPotato - I really like the lighting on the skulled one, but I love the face on the first one.
woo4 - great ink, really cool!
gnahz - makes me smile every time I look at it. Good work!
Arrhenius - the face and pose - incredible :)
VirtualSurreality - very funny and great lighting on that fur.
cakeypigdog - great thumbs, can't wait to see something bigger.

Paweu, thank you. It's hard for me to stylised an animal. They looking always to "natural" for me. I try to give my Hyena more character but it do'snt working till now.
So i can't give you a hint what to do with your picture. But take a look at Chuck, mate.'s Hyena. The first picture i found not so amazing, not misunderstand me, it's much better then all i did, very stylish. But for me the background is the important thing in this picture. Yet it's not only stylish also its funny too. Again, it was a great suprise for me to saw this change from a "normal" stylished animal to a very funny picture.
I can learn much here, not only from Chuck, mate. There are so much incredible pictures in here that it's hard to decide in wich direction my own work should go.

woo4 i think your hyena has got a very stylized technique, dont make the mistake thinking stylized and characterised are the same thing, there is a slight difference

September 19th, 2007, 04:47 PM
grenogs, thank you. I was realy not shure about the difference between stylizing and characterising. You and Pawue are saving me from sketching me to death, instead working on the ink.
But to late for this. Here is the result of 4 hours sketching a funny character.

It might be a bit late... but here's a vid worth watching for some reference on this amazing creature!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAI3fVieUXQ
Now that's beyond nuts on many levels. Check out the sheer size of those animals. They've amazingly powerful neck and shoulders!! That combined with their bite strength (most powerful in animal kingdom?) means that feeding them like in the vid isn't very smart. :\ Of course the idiot hippy tourist isn't going to let that get in the way of his multi-cultural fun.
and here's another that is brilliant. Like something out of a very bad dream.
