Only thing I'd like that for would be ambulance service. Able to get to places that neither ambulances nor helicopters can reach.

side impact airbags won't save you from a 500 ft fall. Darwinism FTW!

The only feasible way for this to work is 100% automation. People drive poorly as it is on roads, things would only get worse if you given them more freedom.

i can't even drive in two dimensions :(

exactly.. 97% of the folks on the roads today cant even properly drive their vehicles on the ground. i highly doubt any regular person would be able to efficiently maneuver one of these in flight. just imagine the disasters they would cause in the air now too..

its a good idea in theory, but people are to dumb for it. its a bad product/sales idea i should clarify - JAG

And even if technicaly feasible... What about enviromental issues? That thing has EIGHT motors!

haha,,that would be fun, ive been to pilot school i know how to fly a basic plane..(not a commercial jet unfourtunatley:() although im not allowed to fly a plane yet....stupid laws...but i agree that we would probrably end up with cars crashing here there and everywhere, unless they invented an airbag that when u start falling it surrounds the car like a bubble!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D..hehe.

Exactly.
This thing would take the dangers of the road to... well, everywhere.

lol - What a lot of naysayers and spoilsports. :P

Cars like this would thin out the gene pool... think of all the idiots you wouldn't have to put up with... because they'd be dead. That'd be a good thing. :D

Well, see, it's not just that simple.
This is a formula that I've been working on:
Moron * 6.6b< / 95% = Alot of dead people

Don't say it. I know I'm a genius.

I have the feeling quite a few people were well set against the introduction of the wheel when it was first introduced many centuries ago as well... :evilmustache:

Safety wise they already have these things:

Single large parachute for small craft (helicopters and airplanes). Effective for long drops from a stall. Works perfectly and has been used many times already to save many pilot's lives.

Expanding bubble-bags of some type of high density foam material that can form around a craft. Good for low drops.

It's just that middle drop and mid-air collisions they have to worry about now.

Now they also had a guy who had a dual car-gyrocopter back in the 50s/60s I believe that worked perfectly. He piloted it down into a processional parade in Washington DC and the president ordered that "abomination" or some words to that effect be removed immediately and banned from use.

Honestly though, you wouldn't need the ability to go any higher than the tallest trees in your area (avoiding the redwoods!). So anywhere from 15-75 feet above ground would be fine. For cities you would need probably 2 layers of flying traffic, so then it would probably get iffy.

But could you imagine eventually not needing roads anymore? All of those stupid billboard advertisements and blacktop stretches ruining the landscape eventually fading from use and dissapearing?
