I found my earliest painting that I still have recently, I will post that soon for a laugh. It's actually the same composition used in my recent 'Restoration Couple' piece, the progresssion over the last eleven years should hopefully be remarkable.

Actually it hapens that two of my most recent paintings are reworkings of two of my very earliest, from 11 years or so ago when I was a teenager. (I must have got nostalgic). The other one is a vampire lady on some stairs. God I cringe when I see these oldies.

Edit. I notice my camera was on anti red-eye again, hence the lips have turned black on the old vampire female. Mystery solved regarding 'the fall of Sophia'.

My first game concept art :bashful: It was for a mini game in Jade Empire. Actually it's another idea that I drew that got included. If you've ever played this game and remember seeing umbrella or parasol mines appearing in the flyer shooter mini-game, it was me who thought of that.

But it went uncredited. Boooo! >:|

Christ Chaoticknight, thanks for ruining my last shred of self-confidence, (:P)since when I was around 15 I was doing shit like this:

That's also the earliest pic I have on the net, readily available to me online.

Here's my first posted image on this site (january 2006):

The first (and last) time I really got into a pic, took it to finish and was generally satisfied. This was the absolute best I could do, had thumbs, prelims, all sorts of reference etc. (spring, 2006, I dont have the final up for some reason):

Heh yeah, I figured this way it would be easier to show the monkeys face... plus if I was twisting a monkey apart I'd do the ol one hand on top of each other way;

0o
o0

Rather than what appears to be the 'hands together in front' way;

0o o0

therefore instead of him facing away from his rear he'd be looking at it.

Ahh, the science of monkey mutilation ..... :teeth:

These were some of the first drawings I really tried on, I think. Posted them on Elfwood back in the day; always got a lot of nasty, but funny, comments, like "Is that a girl or a giraffe?!" Sorry sweetie, even I don't know the answer to that, teehee!

The first is the first drawing I have on my computer.. on the back, it says I did it when I was 3.. the soldier was done in 2000ish when I was 11. The angel woman thing was in 2005ish.. the last one is something I'm working on currently :)

this thread is awesome! it's funny how were all pretty much still drawing the same subject matter that we did when we were younger.

these first three were from the early or mid 1990's, maybe when i was in the 3rd or 4th grade, the 4th piece is when my drawings took a violent turn in the 7th grade, lol,and the final two are from this year and last (note that the character croosure crusher, or whatever the hell i called him back then is the same character in the last two hehehe, and the middle picture is the stay puft marshmallow man on fire :} ).

Don't just be satisfied with people the same age as you having equal drawing ability. You should always aim higher :)

You know what. I got a self realization from all this. I tend to be lax with my drawing, and cartoony. Not because it's "the style I like" but just because it's what I'm use too, and I'm sarcastic. I think I'm gonna switch it up a bit and become more serious with it. Bring studies to a further level. Really try and draw the viewer in. Thanks for the thread.

Being an old fart, I don't have any ancient drawings to post, but to contribute here's a terrible video I made with some mates 10-ish years ago.

This is what happens when art students and computer programming students suddenly gain access to an SVHS cam, a Powermac, a souped up Amiga, lots of beer and bad drugs and an obsolete editing deck.

Study it closely, then do the opposite.

I've thought recently about redoing an entire sketchbook. I have one sketchbook that I originally did in 93 or so, then redrew a bunch of pictures from in 97, so it would be cool to do a third progression of all those old drawings.

Ooh, this is a great thread. :D

I'd done a compilation of my old work before, so here it is, starting when I was seven. My various influences were Beatrix Potter, The Animals of Farthing Wood, Watership Down, Monster Rancher and Redwall in roughly that order. Argh. :bashful:

It's a bit sad seeing where I retarded somewhat instead of improving, around '03. I call that The Freaking Big Eyes Phase. And I didn't get a tablet until '06, so my digital work before that is also quite a laugh. :nohope:

I started really late...

Before my year-12 year ends, I already know that what I study doesn't really give me any great interest after all. So, by chance, since I'm going to go to university, I picked a course that even my parents won't even think that I will pick it. They warned me that I will need to do serious art design and project stuff. Silly me never thought about it, and I just said, that I would give it a try. When I went to university, I was around 19 years old, with no art experience.

I still do computer programming and math, but at the same time I also do multimedia, which the standard is way higher than I thought. It really didn't make much sense to me that I came in with zero art background, and ended up doing something that looks reasonable at the end.

When the holiday strikes, I started to pick up drawing. My first piece wasn't anything that I am happy about. In fact when I see back it looks all twisted.

----------

anyways,
http://jsiu123.deviantart.com/art/Christmas-ecard-53255194
my first art project ... This project did not have much bumps so far, although it can be far better. Got 75% for it, which just sits on a distinctions :D. I was like wow

http://jsiu123.deviantart.com/art/Website-for-Handworks-55912857
This website project...
it was an absolute DISASTER
I redid this around 2 times. First my tutor said that the things didn't align..
and that photoshop effect sucks. Ok I had to redo the whole thing again, going through colour themes and such. I went back and showed to him again, and he said the colour looks like mens wear... :S Ok I'll try again, it's 2 weeks before the project is due already :S

Finally, in the last class I got it right, but unfortunately my math stinks badly too, and I had to work on it before exam strikes, so I had to stop there. I got 70% for this work, which I'm happy about it already. It's a credit at least XD

Not my first work but, this is probably the most mature and most powerful strip I've ever done, and may ever do.

This was done when I was 17-18. about 17 years ago. Shit that makes me feel old. At the time I was reading a lot about the Holocaust, and this true story was directly from Martin Gilberts amazing book of the same name. Still makes me sad to read it now. I did do it as a competition entry for a political comic called CRISIS here in the UK. Once I started however it took on a life of it's own beyond the comp.

Severe limitations in the art. Looking at it I don't think it would be better served with my style now. The primitive style seems to underline the story. I didn't really like leaving this strip to gather dust in my drawers, however ropey it is in execution. It's not an enjoyable story and I hope you can read my handwritten text.

This is a very enjoyable thread. So cool to see where some people started.
These were done when I was about 12. Around that time, TMNT got me started into drawing in the first place. Too bad I don't have the sketches of those characters, but here's my attempt of making my own TMNT type heroes among other stuff.

i found these while i was moving, spirits rejoice. :geekg:

this thread rocks. i especially love the 'my bear is funny'.
when I go back home this weekend, I shall post some stuff I hope to find,
AND
a rejection letter from marvel back in 1994(?) still in good condition. a little yellowed and worn... but its kind of an inspiration deal thing. thus why I kept it. I'll also try to find the corresponding art work I sent them entitled 'Acid Man'. :D

I would say that all of these are from 2004-2005.

This is the earliest stuff and they're only ballpoint pen stuff - paintings seem to have evaporated.

The first one with the dragon and the dwarf was done when I was 17 yo on layout bond.

The second one was done when I was 19 yo for an illustration class as a two page spread. The area for the text in the lower sections of the pages were originally blank but I filled them in later.

The last I did when I was 15 yo on manilla paper!

They are all very old. The paper and ballpoint pen ink have changed colors over the years.

It's great to see people's progress. Keep posting guys.

Around 2000. This was my first digital painting, when I got my first wacom. Abbadon from W40K

I went and dug out some of my old drawings from when I was in high school. Not the best of the bunch, but at least they show my developing "ideation" skills.

Dude! I used to draw stuff like that... only not WWII. They were really random... like slugs with uber crazy weaponry.

Haha this is so cool. I would also draw stuff like this when I was little. Almost no difference. Maybe I drew some bigger jet fighters. Awesome.

This is the oldest drawing I could find. I was 5 years old and it's supposed to be my school
195453

And this was my first "concept" drawing. I was 13 back then... ahh.
195454

dude, are you sure you were 13? that last one is actualy pro, like i seriously enjoy it. do you have a bigger scan?

its kinda unbelivable man, it's so detailed, and the cartoony characters are really well done. it reminds me of where's waldo style art, but better.

That looks like a lot of real modern art I have seen in museums, which were sometimes much worse, and this just goes to show that if a 5 year old can do a good job at it, then modern art isn't deep or difficult in any way haha.

Gosh, I hate those modern art museum paintings done by adults in their 40s that still cant draw anything but squares.

I only put pencil to paper about, mmm, 2 years ago I guess, so my first drawing is really embarrassing considering how old I was like 23 when I did it :bashful:. I was keeping a daily updated journal over at sheezyart for about a year before I started updating with good entries only. It's great to have a timeline that I can look back at :)

My first entry:
