Before purchasing markers decide if you want ones which you can refill. I started with sansford prisma cool + warm grey markers and allthough very nice they soon run out and once they are out thats it. I have just recently started to get Copic markers along with refils for each tone/colour, I cannot fully judge these yet but it looks like copic is the way to go if your serious and are sure you are going to keep using them. I would maybe just buy 3 markers and see how you feel with them.

As for prices, I live in the UK where copic and sansford and hard to find and cost alot more than US. Each Sansford marker cost around £5.50 but I payed about £2.30 from a US site (you have to pay a hefty delivery charge but for uk artists it still works out cheaper!). As for copic, I pay about £4.50 a marker and £6 for its refil, a refil fills up a marker 5 times.

Good luck

Tria are refillable.. but never match the color that they are..

Prismas have the best color but arent' refillable..

thanks a lot for the replies. I live in the US so im not sure what £2.30 comes out to in our currency.

another qusetion... are they hard to work with? I really good with pencils and pens but i heard that markers are faster at geting tone and shading done. I was also wondering if local art supply stores would carry these markers?

thanks again for your replies

if you're good at laying down grayscales with pencil you wont have any problem with marker... markers are a more effecient way to get grayscale values than time consuming pencil..
you will just be forced to work from light to dark with them.

I suggest a grayscale set of prismacolors.. .if too expensive then invest in a 10, 30, 50, and 80...
Pens such as pilot and staedtler brands wont bleed when markers is applied...
Beinfand marker paper is the best... the back of marker paper soaks it up better than the front (this goes for all marker paper).. so rip it out and turn it over..
if your local art store doesn't carry this stuff you can maybe find it at office max... or office depot

good luck :chug:

These guys seem to be talkin from lots of experience, Ive only used copic markers, but I know by now that theyre definately the type I prefer. Cant imagine how they could possibly work better:)

the only downside with markers is that you go from light, too dark... if you go to dark, youre screwed!

markers rock tho.

go buy lots.

:chug: cheers!

I use copics. Formerly I used magic markers but they“re not longer in production. Don“t forget that you need special paper manufactured fer markers for the full marker effect. Some prefer cheaper paper that comes close, but in my book if you decide to work with a two component system you shouldn“t be cheap on the second component. Using the back of the sheets doesn“t work fer me. I work on the front. When my marker colors are dried on the paper I finish off with waterproof black ink, Refillable pens or brush.

Personally the best and cheapest paper for markers is a ream(500 sheets) of Photocopy paper that will run you $5.00. Just take an extra sheet and put it underneath for bleed through. It is also the whitest paper for scanning, you dont get that yellow tinge like you would a sketchbook. also if you are afraid to marker your original ink drawings, go get a couple copies made at kinkos and practice on those till your confidence builds.

I use prisma, never tried the refillables, sounds nice. In the gray tones I use 10 30 50 70 90%. "You will never need the other percentages ever." Buy extras of the lighter shades. you will use those up the most and they sell out the fastest at most art supply stores. :bash:

I dont mess with the color markers either.I just havent bothered. But I do dig the french grays.:D
