Hey mates and welcome to my first sketchbook :)!
I finally decided to start one, cause I need more motivation to draw..
I hope I'll get some friendly comments and helpful critique.
The following sketches are... well, nearly all doodles and works I've ever drawn.
I'm drawing since late 2004 now... very irregular at first and I just drew about 3-5 pics a year. Anyway I'm drawing more seriously since summer 2007.
I could go crazy cause I started that late! So I'll practise and learn as well as I can to regain the lost time quickly.
So... you see, i got hardly any practice and experiences :(.
I try to improve myself and eventually find an own style.
I got to know a girl in school last week and she's a genius in drawing o.o.
We want to start a comic together and I guess it will inspire and motivate me.
... Well, I hope you like my first tryings :P

thanks for posting on my sketch book :teeth:
one suggestion, try using the edge of the pencil, and if your using a tech pencil, great for laying out a line drawing, try a wooden or a stick of graphite. You can get some great effects with just one stroke, for like shading and even certain lines, like lips, eyes and hair.
anyway keep up the drawing buddy, your stuff has some good potential.

Thanks to you both :).
Nistarn your're right... I've seen the lip-problem allready.. but I don't want to change anything, cause I drew the lines too hard. They whould stay visible and that looks terrible. And the eyes... well, they are a bit too accentuated.
I'll improve this next time ;).

Your drawings have great energy! Do you have any drawing books or are you teaching yourself? I think with your drive, the right instruction would really help you take your art up to the next level. Good luck with your exams :P

Well, here I am again :D!
I had some unhappy weeks... school.. exams.. an operation at a tendon (ouch).. and so on...
This is what I scribbled in my "visual diary" (it's a project for school) during my hospital stay.

I bought a small sketchbook (REALLY small xD.. like the palm of hand) for my sweet little cousin. She's 5 years old and of great talent. I drew the first page for her (she looooves horses ;D)

Got holidays for two weeks, so I'll have more time to draw ;D.

I'll try to get better with it.
I added some hair and "corrected" the form of her jaw. I'm not very happy with this "correction" :(. I think the portrait has lost the similarity to her ._.
Damn... maybe I still can undo this... but it also could destroy everything!!

Please help me... do you think it's still looking good? I don't know... :[

Its still looking good, the lip piercings ( right?) are good in contrast , from my telling of it. That little curl of her hair, has some weird lighting in it maybe move that to the right a bit, that should help that.

I've noticed a lot of people mentioning visual diaries. I feel kinda tempted to try that, too. XD (though, it *almost* seems a little bit redundant by having a sketchbook, too. I don't know)
Anyhow, it must be amazing to be near a castle and stuff. =D I look forward to seeing the finished portrait piece!

with hands, you really have to think in terms of overlapping shapes, what shapes are closer and what shapes are further away? once you figure that out (should be pretty easy :P) its all just a matter of making that readable in your drawing by drawing the lines from the contour into the shape of the hand, and making the shapes overlap.
cheers, keep it up!

First I have noticed with many of your hand studies the metacarpal of the index finger is somewhat off angle. The line should angle more towards the center of the wrist than the thumb.
Second, on the portrait of the girl with the lip piercing, the changes you made to the jaw messed up your facial symetry some, the jawline is no lonoger smooth and flowing, which is fine if that depicts the person more accurately, but then the flesh of the face would also conform to those bulges. The line from the nose to the mouth looks odd as well, he head doesn't seem to be in a position to create that deformation. (curve) That said I still find it beautiful.
Lastly, on the subject of your new tablet. A few words of advice. When I first got my tablet I was all excited, but initially got frustrated with the feel and form of it. I have a 9x12 so it was not the same as holding a sketchpad in my lap :) I ended up going back to pencil for a good while. After I gave it another shot I just kept forcing myself to practice with it until it became comfortable. Oh The first thing you should do is change to the felt nib, in my opinion it feels much more like pencil than the hard nibs. And finally, don't stop practicing in pencil, I've been working on the tablet for so long now that I've nearly lost the ability to use any other medium. Might just be me though.
I have enjoyed your sketches. Thank you.

good stuff so far. i can already see improvement. like the others said before me: draw, draw, draw!!! do a lot of figure drawings. check out bridgman or hogarth when it comes to the human anatomy. but drawing from life is essential (something i need to do more often, it's been a while).

@ bakadoodle: Wow.. thank you! You had a very accurate look at my sketches. Now those little faults are catching my eye as well. I'll try to avoid them.. :P
You're absolutely right in case of the wacom. Motivations withered faster I thought.. but I think it's the lacking knowledge about painterX and ps :(. I should ask a friend for teaching me cause I never worked with that stuff.
Thank you once again... keep criticizing me :)
@ Peetaer: Thanks :D I heard a lot of those artists, but never had a look at their works and studies v.v. Are there any published books with those typical anatomystudies of them? I like this exaggerated way of drawing.. a pity it's to late to wish a book for christmas :/. But I'll buy one with the money I'll get ;D.
Thanks for the advice... :).

I really like your portraits...and I really mean it.
I see that you really improved since the first page (: that's something that give us newbies a little courage(not sure if that's the right word, but my brain is not working properly anymore :P) to keep trying to get better.
And about your last drawing,I really like his expression!(:

[Hey I've just made an account here (this is my first post) and I'm just trying to get into the whole critiquing thing, before I start posting my own stuff I'm by no means an expert, so you don't have to take notice of everything I say, haha]
Wow, your knowledge of human faces is really good! Especially the portrait of the girl, I'm wondering though was there any construction type lines there that I can't see? Or did you just insert the eyes in space as it were, using you're knowledge of anatomy?
Hope you know which one I'm on about, I'm really liking your sketchbook =)

I can definitely see really strong improvement since your first post. If this is how fast you're improving, I wonder what your stuff will look like in a year or two :)
I like your last batch, especially the hand studies. I'd really love to see more colored pieces~

Autumnal Dream. Man that watercolor landscape BLOWS MY MIND! 20 minutes, seriously, huh! Very nice progress you've done here.
Very nice to see all the studies you've done! Good job. Work on the anatomy though, I think it'll improve your skills a lot.
Very nice pencil rendering on the second last one and very nice values on the last one.
Comparing the two last ones the pencil one look's quite different and for some reason look's a bit like female. In no way this is an insult but just something that struck me and look's quite different than the last one.
Hope this was somehow helpful. Take care.

Tremendous progress here. Your linework is getting much more controlled--excellent. At the beginning, a lot of your lines were scratchy and they seemd to lack confidence, but that last set of five, ten and fifteen minute figure drawings demonstrated much more finesse. It's also great that you are starting to see shapes, or at least that's what I get out of that last selfportrait on page three. For a while hair was giving you troubles--you've got to look at it as masses of light and dark, defined by hard and soft edges. Your definitely making progress there.
The only advice I have for you now--start to think about edge condition. You can define almost everything with line, but you have to think about what that line is saying. Experiment with lineweight, figure out what works for you. Try to represent the edges you see. Along this same line--take your time with your rendering. Shadows are also subject to different edges--try to look closely at them, and try to represent them.

Sedig: You're absolutely right! That's a thing I never payed attention to. I really have to figure this out. I'll try next time! Thank you very much. :)

Nicht schlecht, nicht schlecht herr... autumnal dream :P sogar sher gut würd ich sagen.
Is it actually the light set up you use that makes the texture of the paper so prominent? I kinda don't like that, so I wonder now wheter I'll ever by that rough watercolor paper myself :D
Autumnal Dream
September 5th, 2008, 06:40 PM
Kurjuus: Hehe, well the texture looks a bit extreme in here, you're right ^^. But its very rough indeed. Mh, but i don't think that it's disturbing at all. It's worth it, cause you can erase all wet colours with just one wipe, cause the water doesn't get in the paper that quick. I like this paper most for watercolors.. others, especially toned ones, distort the colours or you can't ever correct them after a mistake.
Well it's your choice ;) try them all out.

Hey there!
Hygami (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=126056&page=8) just visited me for a week and we did our own little artworkshop.. I learned a lot!! Finally I know how to colorize with photoshop and we figured out some new drawingstyles. It was a great experience and I'm looking for the next meeting :D.
My mum ordered us to paint a picture in acrylic for a little reward :p.
She wanted us to paint the two portraits of us and my little brother on a colorful backround... we had free choice. Cause of the short time we couldn't finish it completely, so my head is still missing.
Anyway, this is the process:
First we doodled a little colorstudy for the backround in ps....

Then the painted one...

I hope you like it.. helpful crits are welcome.
