I've been a long time lurker for awhile and finally worked up the nerve to start a sketchbook on here after watching the Marko Djurdjevic DVD(very inspiring btw). Feel free to be brutally honest with your critiques. I would like any and all input you guys would have for me. Lastly i will do my best to make sure this is updated daily.

cool stuff, i like the first post with the character ideation sketches. I haven't seen the DVD, but those look really cool. I'd just say to watch proportions, and keep practicing/studying. Be very aware of what you are drawing. Also, pay as much attention to the head and face as the rest of the body, in terms of placement and proportion. Nice work so far, I'd like to see more. And happy first post!

Hi, nice start man. Your proportions are still off (definitely in the females). Also try to improve your linework: try to describe volumes with your lines. Make them thicker in the foreground and thinner as they go away etc. Keep going!

Razorb

Radio24, StarbonesCoffin, Bartovan, and Razorb thanks for the c&c. now only if i was as smart as my eyes...i guess thats why hogarth decided to make great books. let me know if there is anything else i can pick up to work on my anatomy. Already taking a life drawing class in school and out also. Marko DVD inspired me to be all i can be <3

September 3rd, 2007, 06:35 PM
Your ideas are looking great but as you know proportions are off. I don't know how much preliminary sketching you're doing but it definitely helps to draw the simplified skeleton first - make sure its in balance and the proportions and angles match up - then draw muscles over it. It looks to me like you're doing that but maybe rushing it. Anyway, keep up the hard work, you're making progress!

The Curehead
September 3rd, 2007, 07:26 PM
great stuuf, man but your proportions really need work.
your torso seems to get very narrow around the waist in alot of them.
em maybe buying bridgemans book on anotomy might help.
great ideals though, and keep it up

I like the face floating in front of the head...would that be an organic projection of some sort, or some kind of tech? Would be cool if it was a projection based on whatever race they're speaking to in order to be more...friendly? I dunno, haha. Cool stuff though :) thanks for stopping by my sb!

Texahol

studies are looking better.

a word on hogarth studies. He tends to make his anatomy very 'bubbly'

If you're going to study anatomy from drawings, I'd suggest really switching up your source material so you can get a wide range of information, and choose who does what things best. Hogarth usually has really good information on organic form. beware of symmetrical curves ( ) <-like that. they generally don't happen in organic forms in real life.
loomis and bridgeman aand villpu other popular artists with 'blah blah how to draw human figure books' and they all have good information and individual shortcomings.
Although it is good to study how other people are seeing things, It's also important to see for yourself.
don't be afraid to spend lots of time on your studies, and finish them (don't balk out on the feet!)

something else I'm noticing, is you're squishing information onto the page. Don't squish, just draw off the page and learn how to size it properly next time.

Texahol

on your graphic style demon thing:

try to think more about the form in lightsource. I'm pretty sure that the effect you are shooting for 'a la hellboy' has the shadows in black, and then the parts in light in color. you have inconsistent lightsources, and blacks just thrown around everywhere. Try to break down the form into large shapes of light and shadow keeping in mind your light source.

on the orc faces:

you are a nerd. I know nothing about wow.

environment:

when I am drawing things on the computer, what I will usually do is after the initial planning [line drawing] I will put down [on a new layer] a 50% grey layer set to multiply [so you can keep your lines] then work on a new layer on top of that to carve out the lights and darks. If you're starting without line, I'd just lay down a 50% grey before you even start. it helps speed things up, and will allow for a better value range. Also, environments are usually more interesting in a horizontal format [because we see in horizontal format. 16:9 is usually reall good [because we've been conditioned by movies at that ratio]. I find working in a square to be very challenging compositionally.
now I'm not sure if this was intentional [and please forgive me!] but the branch thing in the lower left is like a penis, and the hole in the tree thing is like a vagina. maybe i'm just being a perv.

Looking better and better by each post!
Try to find a book on anatomy and a bunch of bodybuilder mags, use the mags as reference to draw from. Keep the anatomybook at hand to give you some help with how the muscles connect etc. I do this all the time, and then i just disregard the whole thing and make everything bigger=)

nice, i like your creatures, you've come up with some interesting ideas with the more mutilated, half-robot/elemental demons. right now i'd say watch the waists and the legs on some of your figures because they look a little thin, but i can see your doing your figure studies so you'll probably overcome that issue soon. keep it up man, i would like to see what other diabolical creations lurk in your head.

hey kaffinated, this is a good start so far. I agree with texahol on his earlier comments about hogarth. Its nice to see that you're dabbling in envo work among other things, so keep experimenting. I liked the head studies in page 1, your school sketch, among things. Try to keep the studies coming at a consistent rate, the theory you get from that stuff will help you branch out at a later stage with much more ease. Keep it up!

Texahol
November 29th, 2007, 09:36 PM
with posemaniacs, it might be better to focus on gesture work at first, and make sure to mix that up with LONG anatomy studies. and you'll start being able to do really fast anatomy/gesture studies :P

lets see some nice long studies from joo mang.

Doggy
December 4th, 2007, 05:23 AM
I agree! Trying out different stuff and mediums is NOT crawling=)

Texahol
December 4th, 2007, 06:40 PM
if you feel your progress is crawling, it's probably due to being at the end of your rope as far as your visual memory goes. Do some nice long studies from life/ reference, and make them as good as you can. I've found that doing long term studies not only helps upgrade my visual memory, but gets my brain back into gear, and ideas come abound.

oyowzas: Thanks man. I currently have been using a French gray set from Prismacolor. As for techniques its alot of trial and error. I also got the DVD from featuring Feng Zhu. But the bulk of it is just playing with it so you can workout the processes in your head. If you need any more explaining/ help feel free to pm me, msg me on my SB, or IM me.

hey man thanks for dropping by my sb. you've got some good concepts here, and can see much improvement now over your first stuff. keep up w/ the anatomy studies, maybe trying utilizing your lines a bit more w/ longer flowing lines and more use of weighted line. i'd also suggest in your digis work more on the contrast to help the images appear less flat. keep it up.

Kaffinated
March 7th, 2008, 05:51 AM
thesadpencil: NP on stopping by. Keep up the work! Yeah i have been fighting with breaking the habit of being to sketch with my lines or just going over and reassessing them. Thanks for the input on the Digi's. I do need to start posting more of em.

haha the wrestler teddy made me lol. these last enviros are looking good, in the one w/ the building try darkening up the lines along w/ upping the contrast in the image, because the building seems to get lost in the background. keep it up.

thesadpencil: as always thanks for the input! well post some more enviros with better contrast soon.

This is a head study done for Don Seegmiller's Digi Face&Figure painting. My only crit atm is i need more life drawing practice due to the fact i was painting using photo ref and caught myself spending too much eye time on the painting and not on the photo. It taught me to keep pushing myself to paint it with my eyes and not my head.

Kaffinated
March 16th, 2008, 05:38 PM
Here is a color portrait done for Don Seegmillers class. I had to make the flesh tones myself from a b&w photo. I will come back for more refinement...but right now i would just overwork the crap outta it. Hope you enjoy!

I think its way to orange and yellow at the moment, its reminding me of a Simpsons character. It needs for the majority to be less saturated, also you need to start introducing some cooler shadows.

Kaffinated
March 17th, 2008, 06:14 AM
smartkyle: thanks for stopping b and pointing the overly orange tones. I think i may of fixed the orange tone and will come back and touch up the shadows. For now im to the point I'll overwork the wrong areas.

So i decided to work on the concepts for http://www.gameartisans.org/dominancewar/ Dominance War 3 to help get more into the concepting groove and to get practice in for next year. I plan on covering all four classes.

Here are the first batch of thumbs for my Stalker/Warlord concept w/ an artifact empowered with darkness/void.

Here is my concept so far.

Stalker/Warlord: He or she is part of a mystic society of Buddhist-like culture. They have recently come into posetion of a ultra powerful artifact known as the Negator. The Negator is the embodiment of the void god Eridanus power left on the mortal realm for his own sadistic glee. The Negator has the power to erase one or hundreds of organisms from the physical realm with a single stoke of its blade.

The Stalker/Warlord is called Ecks Gee. Playing on the word Exegesis which is a Buddhist teaching on the emptiness of persons and phenomena is unique to Buddhism, constituting an important metaphysical critique of theism with profound implications for epistemology and phenomenology.

Ecks hails from the SunYata clan (infusing a bit of Feudal Japan into this) Where they teach everything one encounters in life is empty of absolute identity, permanence, or an in-dwelling 'self'. This is because everything is inter-related and mutually dependent - never wholly self-sufficient or independent. All things are in a state of constant flux where energy and information are forever flowing throughout the natural world giving rise to and themselves undergoing major transformations with the passage of time.
This plays off the Buddhist word Śūnyatā.

The SunYata clan teaches this through their own brand of martial arts. In this I figure Ecks can be a Warlord or a Stalker. If Ecks was a warlord he could use the SunYata teachings to call upon the strength of other living organisms that will allow him...almost taping into a life force unseen. If Ecks was a stalker he would use the same concept to be able to disappear and reappear by willing himself.

Now here are some thumbnails. I need to work on my silhouetting a bit more after doing this. Maybe more thumbnails are needed. Also i shall post thumbnails of the Negator weapon soon.

let me know what one you like the best

cheers

I like the figure drawing, but the right arm and face look a bit off...the arm for the colours, I think, and the face because the features, the cheek and nose aren't doin' it for me.

But lovely on the back and legs, I think...

Quinn Simoes: Thanks man! i keep em coming!

FedDark: Thanks for commenting!

Santon:Thanks for the input. I think alot of what you commented on is my problem im correcting with trying to keep my eyes on the ref for about 80% of the time and 20% on the painting. So still having that ratio off a bit make some proportions look a lil wonky.

that bodybuilder is coming out nicely. You really copped out on the face though. Just remember to treat the face like the rest of the body, just shapes and values and hues! Dont' think "oh this is a nose" or "this is an eye"

Also, after looking through your stuff, my biggest critique is to slow down and concentrate a bit more. Speedies are okay, but you'll learn a lot more from long studies. Color matching is hard without having a strong sense of values first. Try some greyscale value studies and only concentrate on the values and edges...see where those get you :)

hey cool crab their! Planning to go all out on deep? The underwater Robot hero is worth a colour paint, maybe in a different pose? Maybe photo referencing colours for environments would help a little. I'm not sure if you want to develop your enviro's but really trying to 'see' the correct colours will make enviro's from imagination alot easier. Muscle man study looks good but no nipples lmao!

Hey Kaffinated,

Cool sketchbook going on here. A little inconsistend, there cool stuff and there's less cool stuff (the bodybuilder image worked out pretty well I think). THere's a couple of things I noticed while thumbing through it:

First of all, and it's a pretty standard thing to say around these parts, but do more anatomy studies. Gestures might help you, but also do some studies of the face as it is your weakest point yet (the bodybuilder piece gets kind of ruined because of it :(). Also, right now I think you tend to use the same muscular upper body on most of your sketches. I suspect this is because it is something you have drawn before, so you don't have to figure new stuff out.

Second, the environments need more work too. They miss some perspective and depth, which has mostly got to do with the use of colors. Doing some studies from pictures might help there.

All in all, keep doing what you do but watch out for tunnel vision. I got the impression you build too much on previous done studies to do sketches from the mind. Might be just me though :D

I have not looked through you entire SB. I would not be able to comment on everything anyways. I would like to say this, I have noticed when a person is sketched you can tell what sex they are. I noticed that your sketches of women you have sex organs there and on your male forms just the imagination of sex organs. Think about this, it is your Creation! The shell of a creature is symetrical except when it comes to the male sex organ (God's humor or confusion) it goes to the left or to the right. And this is on all creatures not just humans. Also, the last page here I noticed the Man and then the Beast. You know what I'm talkin about. Keep it up, your on the right track. Peace out.

I like that last study :) Shows some progress over the two pieces above that (probably because you used reference?). I miss the nipples on it though, which are a great tool to explain the form of the body a bit better.

On those landscape studies, the foreground doesn't really match with the background. I suppose it's from ref, but I wonder if the foreground was all that black. There's a lot of lighting going on up there, but nothing happening on ground level. Also, the difference in amount of details in the foreground and the clouds/lightning is a pretty rought transition. Especially the huge brushstrokes in the sky create a separation in style in these studies.

Keep 'em coming though :P

I can't tell if you still do this, as you do a lot more landscapes now, but I noticed on the first page you give everyone narrow heads where women tend to have quite round heads...round off the female bodies a little too as on page 4, the 'squareness' makes them look more masculine and less attractive. Great improvement though

hey and thanks for dropping by my sketchbook.

I was looking trough your pages here and I want to give you some honest feedback. I like your line art. It is steady and precise. What I noticed, and i've seen you've tried working on this in your latest posts, is that you need to work on values. Values and color behavior.

In order to get them skills you should just keep on study light work a lot on values. Then perhaps take up the colours..

I think value studies will have a great effect on your lineart too - giving you a great understanding to illuminate more mass with lines?

I also saw your stick figures and I thought they were a bit noisy. If you try to abstract the use of line, and concentrate more on each single line and curve, I think they would convey and more interesting behavior.

Keep it up and I hope you take my critiques as love :)

Blythe
July 13th, 2008, 07:28 PM
I think the master study is lovely though I wish you had spent more time on that hand. Poor hand.

Also for the lastest I agree some more values would be great since you were obviously thrying to put some shading in there. The guy definitly needs nipples though, do not fear the nipple! I would love to see this guy in a more dynamic pose.

Amazing Action Ape
July 14th, 2008, 10:43 PM
You've got a great start mate, but you could use a little more help.

Id suggest doing many more hand studies, lots of feet studies, especially from the masters. Practice your tonals and value studies, by doing hands in light/shadow etc. Pay a lot of attention to proportions. Slow things down, and measure out. You'll get faster over time. Just be patient. You'll find youll learn more about contours, and form, as well as light/shadow by doing this bits first. Start in BW and then work into colour.

Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!

I like the inked stuff on that last page. I think you should maybe try rendering things more in a permanent medium (like ink) as an effort to see things more before drawing them. It might build your confidence up further, and help you describe more with less. Or just draw more in pen. Use your line to describe form more, rather than just straight up and down strokes.

I really enjoyed the little shaman guy in post #180, he looks like he would be pretty mysterious . . .

Aww, I love faeries (I think that is obvious. I want them to feel lighter somehow. Also for your next area of study I would look at feet, they are feeling a bit socklike right now.

The last is very cute, next time I would plan ahead for the silhoette as parts of her get lost against the wings. You want to try to make sure what you draw is clear even if you only drew the outside shape of it. ^^

Good work (you are better at updating than I am, alas).

Your sketchbook told me to check it out.

I'm glad I did.

You've got lots of studies going on, and they will certainly pay off once you put them all to work!

Hey man,

Some of your environment pencils are really nice pornography wise :) haha!

Your fast gestures are hit and miss, some are bloody brilliant, while some are a tad bit stiff in places, though I cant talk. Good work overall, I love ya pencils the most, your digital stuff looks a bit washed out, probably due to the brush settings, try to block in planes with hard flat colors first? May help ya. I think illd like to see some anatomy studies, but more on the illustrative side so you spend longer looking at various parts instead of speed paintings.

Keep it up man! :)

Hey Kaff,

I think you should work more on some solid solid construction in your drawing. Paying VERY close attention to proportions, and insertions of muscles, landmarks, etc. Do some excercises where you start with the skeleton (just a block in) then start packing the muscles on. Or work in specific sections, aka the arm, or the chest, or the face, and start from the bone up. Its here, where you can then learn more about planes, and really let your rendering skills shine.

Here is a little sampling of what i've been playing around with. Color Theory class has me painting a shit ton of Gouache swatches. Just waiting on the D/L from Jason Manly entitled Mantone:color theory done right.

Love the creatures below Phil Collins, especially toward the bottom of the right one. The stretching in the flesh right there reminds me of some amazing tattooes I've seen. It's grimm but reads very well.

Kaffinated, I'm enjoying your pencils very much! I see your strokes are going with the form, which is excellent and yielding good results. Torso studies looking nice, which book are you studying by the way, I was about to say Giovanni, but not sure, hehe.
Man, I didn't know you live in Austin, we should definelt hit up the sketchgroup sometime. I haven't actually been to one, but I do go to quite a few figure drawing sessions at the Hancock center and the AVAA.

Cool studies - watch out for making the faces too flat in profile - loomis has the face as a straight gesture line but most people curve in some way.

Yay update! The fangy face looks like someone got a little too cozy with a resident evil licker, very nice.

wow! you sure sketched a lot! xD
i love your line work, it has a really nice feel to me. I also like the way ou characterirez the heads, although some of their faces look a bit flat. Also i noticed but i could be wrong that in some of heads you tended to mark the (flat =p) contour of the faces much more than the actual features. Comparing these to the ones where you actually put some very dark marks in the features areas, the last ones look more alive. Hope this make some sense =)
anyway very good job, keep it up!

ps. thanks for the help on the warlock thingy, and sorry for not stopping by earlier =)
