Well I finally got the push to start a sb here, mainly from MindCandyMan's phenomally inspiring sketchbook. I still have a long way to go as a very humble student and all the great art here, as well as MCM's thread is what inspires me and keeps me going.
So anyway I'll start this off...
Any crits and comments are very welcome!!

I'm having some trouble getting the proportions of my objects to be right... today I made some progress establishing the link between planes and how light falls on a surface. I also realized that I could use existing parallel objects in a room to determine my eye level in that room. Why didn't I realize this sooner? silly me...

Thanks for the help :) Yeah my perspective needs some work, I'm still struggling to get that down as well as make sure things are in proportion.

I attempted to do a more complex still-life today, mainly involving the dreaded ellipses and cylinders. To warm myself up I scribbled a very rough, loose mini-sketch of the setup so I can get a feel for the negative spaces and heights, and I think it helped greatly. I'm rather pleased with how the end result is although it was exhausting, and I do plan to study the values for this setup tomorrow.
Sad to say I did not do the final drawing with much construction, which I'm feeling a little guilty about :P As one can see I am in the habit of writing reminder notes on my own pages...

Blessed cows, I've been so busy with term starting that it's been 6 days since really drawing. Bad!!
Anyway, I don't have much that is glorious to look at :( I feel though that I am learning something from doing nasty pages of sketches. The first page is one of 10 pages of gestural drawings done over 2 hours in a semi-busy area. I thought it was the best out of all 10 because it took me a couple pages to warm up and slowly get used to trying to jot down the essence of people as fast as possible. I think the biggest thing I learned was to look for the dominant shape/angle first instead of starting with the head like I was doing at first.
The second page is me trying to understand human skulls and what they're made of, with a skull model and following along Bridgman's book. So far I've only drawing people without really understanding what's underneath the skin. The quashed little skull on the right of the 2nd page was amusing because I had the model in one hand and was looking at it without really paying attention to the paper while drawing.... I didn't know I was seated/angled wrongly to the drawing paper because when I turned it flat it looked like that. Ahh, optics.
EDIT: Completed 2nd page of skulls

September 01 & 02, 2007
September 1st was a miserable drawing day. It's one of those days where your brain just doesn't really want to focus on all the intellectual, academic stuff that I still need to make my drawings better. I started thinking I would just do some warmup sketches to begin with, but as time wore on and they showed no signs of improvement (this is a great way to see what has been ingrained and what hasn't) I decided to give up for the night and just draw really badly.
The first 2 pages are the result of that. I think subconsciously I wanted to see just how bad I could draw.
Today was very much better. I started out fresh and began by attempting to get my mind to eat the "think of masses and planes" thing.
Page 3 is drawn in order from left to right, top to bottom. The first two were alright. The third one something seemed to click, if only just for a little, and if I focused on visualizing the mass of what I was drawing in my head, I found that I usually got --closer-- to the line I wanted to reproduce. It wasn't perfect but it was an interesting thing.
The fourth one was ok, the fifth one I'm very pleased with even though it looks hella crude. So far, this has been the very closest I have come to understanding planes and values, in all my drawing life.
I am also finding that I love drawing skulls.

Phew, been a long while since posting here, but that's mainly due to school. Here are a bunch of drawings from figure drawing class.
These were all done on a big 18 by 24 sketchpad with the exception of the charcoal drawings which were done on D'arches paper. For some reason he really wanted us to use D'arches paper, I have no idea why.
I haven't used a big pad in forever and initially it was unwieldy, but I've grown to like it (still hate carting those things around though). The tall thin guy has a very odd face that I have a lot of difficulty trying to capture.
For the black bald guy he was fun to draw, being muscular and not atrophied and/or fat like a portion of models are. We drew him nude first and then he was clothed and placed in the same position so we could see where the cloth gathered and puckered at the points of tension, which was a very helpful exercise overall.
Then we moved into charcoal drawings; now I haven't done charcoal in over a year, and the last time I tried it I used charcoal pencils extensively and didn't really 'get messy' with it. The first drawing I did of the guy with the top hat turned out alright, something is wonky with his arms. I was trying to get familiar with the medium.
The last one I'm very happy with, the girl with the printed shirt and hat. There seems to be a vast difference of quality between the first drawing and this one, I don't know why. This last one I really took the time to try and pin the contours as accurately as I could.

Hey D. Nice sketchbook you got going here. I can sympathize with the perspective stuff, its a bugger until it 'clicks', lol keep it up and you'll get it soon enough. Nice skull sketches, good forms, good understanding. Now, try to let this knowledge effect your shading when you start 'drawing' faces. Keep it up dude :-)

One of my drawing instructors, Mr. Jewell, showed me some examples of gorgeous ink wash work and so I decided to give it a try. Here's a skull I painted with ink wash on cold press paper.
The other image is a generic guy sketch out of my head, in Corel Painter. I don't know why but I wanted to.

School's started again so I am constantly busy. Monday I drew from 10 to 10, and today from 11 to 10 (although today we had more of a break in between). I'll try and get more pictures of class drawings to put in here too.

Really good studies you've got here.
You've mentioned i one thread that Ron Lemen is teaching you, can you share some more info of how really good he is, as i heard he's a true master.
I'm was planning to go to Watts atelier in a couple of months, but now i'm not so sure, as many people state that Ron's teaching is outstanding.
I'd really apreciate this info, as this trip will be pretty expensive for me as 1 dollar = 2,8 of my currency, so you get the point :S I pretty much have to pick the best option possible.
Medelo
April 13th, 2010, 02:43 AM
@Icecold: Hey, thanks for the comments. :) Yes I'm currently learning with Ron at my school and he's really helped me a ton with my drawing. The great thing about Ron is he's done all sorts of stuff from storyboarding to graphic novels to fine art to concept art to illustration, so he can tell you pretty much anything you want or need to know. I think he also breaks information down in a very simple and easy to understand way, which is great for a noob like me. His approach is very structural though so it depends on what you're looking for.
I dunno about Watts atelier personally but from what I've heard they are a fantastic school with a tried and true method. I really don't think you could go wrong with them, unless you're looking for a less 'fine artsy' approach to learning.
But anyways, for proof of Ron's effectiveness here is my first page of figures on Jan 12 this year <__<

And this is my best page from today's model session... it's certainly not amazing yet haha. But I've learned a ton.

Thank you all for the replies :) Makes me feel bad for not posting more! I've been working on redesigning one of the earlier characters using new stuff I learnt, so I didn't really want to show it because I'm still figuring so many things out... but since there have been so many positive replies, why not...
The feedback I've received thus far has mainly been that the costume is really generic, so that's what I'm working out through all the silhouettes. I was also doing some gestures from imagination to work out how this character would stand/move so that's what all the doodles are for.

i really liked this sketchbook, it gave such a neat and clean feeling, also the enviorment on first page post #26 has such a great angel and feel to it, i hope it will turned into a colour work someday, also the fact you can see how much you progress since 2007 without going thro 50 pages which was something i personally enjoyed :), will be on the lookout for more from you

- staedler pigment liners 0.3 to 0.5 for the linework
- copic cold gray 20, warm gray 40, 50, and 70 for the middle grays
- Tombow black brush pen for deep blacks and for thicker linework

Medelo
June 14th, 2011, 04:07 PM
@Pigeonkill and Vay: Yep, Canson scrapbook.... sometimes it feels a bit of a waste to draw on them but they give the drawings a really nice look. The key thing about the highlights is not to overdo them and to just use them sparingly. Think of them like specular highlights, not the general light side of the form.

love love your pen sketches. It looks like you have really good control of form. That gets lost a bit when you move to digital, things start looking a little too round and all of the edges become soft. In your last enviro everything is equally soft and there's no point of focus. Going back in and bringing out the edges would really push that piece, because I really like it but it could be even better.

Your environment thumbnails are awesome, great values and air perspective! Colors on the life studies look good too, especially in the two 4 hour studies, the colors are vivid and interesting. One piece of criticism though, you sometimes seem to use a small brush to paint a smooth color transition. It captures the attention to places where less would be more, like the back and shoulder on this one (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1317627&stc=1&d=1315418631) or the chin on this one (http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1241433&stc=1&d=1306537539) for example. I guess in general it's good to use the biggest brush you possibly can because it gives an effortless look and keeps attention to the places where there's detail on the subject. Then again, I definitely like your brushstrokes on the Jurassic Park thumbs for example.

January 27th, 2012, 08:05 PM
@Ludic: Thank you!
@Eightball: Thanks, it's been challenging to really start thinking about design fundamentals in addition to the art fundamentals... but I like the process. :)
As for school, well, it's now really really busy, my one complaint is I never have time to work on my OWN art anymore, it's all taken up with homework. But I'm learning a lot :) I have vis dev classes where it's all design, and also more illustration type classes where we have to compose rhythms and flow in single images, for example. It's definitely a unique experience because we get exposure to many schools of thinking, from the Art Center industrial design way of breaking things down to realist fine art to traditional illustration to animation vis dev to movie concept art. I just wish I had more personal time so I could actually sit down and really assimilate all this information and figure out what I REALLY want to do. I would say the one thing Laafa is incredible at, bar none, is giving students a really comprehensive view of most spheres in the art world, so it's like being given a gigantic road map of everything. But it's still up to us to figure out which one of these directions we would like to ultimately head towards.
Anyway here's some art from last term that I found and never posted... photo paint of a classmate, and a prop sheet.

Your figure drawings are great. What is your method to learn anatomy and movement?
Medelo
January 31st, 2012, 02:33 AM
Hey Grzessnik, thanks for the comments. :) I would recommend Michael Hampton's book Figure Drawing as that is a good overview on anatomy and construction. As for movement, I think that you need to feel the movement in your own body before you can put it down on paper. First one needs to understand what the pose is doing (is it a violent, aggressive pose? Is it a calm, peaceful pose?) before we can simplify the movement into something easily readable.
Once we understand the pose, then we can concentrate on locating the main action line throughout the pose if it is an active pose. If it is a more stable pose then we can start looking for large overall shapes (for example a model in a yoga pose would be like a triangle, a person curled up would be like a square). When we have the basic shapes and lines of the pose then we can start putting the anatomy on top of it.
