New round is on, well done everybody for great works in the last round!

THIS WEEK's TOPIC:
-FREAK SHOW-

A little while ago I did this self-assigned task in my sketchbook and it was called Freak Show. Now I think it might be a good time to bring this idea back and see what You can come up with...
It's all about the circus of oddities, a bunch of mutants going from one town to another and doing the show for common people craving sensation...
I want you to design your own original freak and post it here with description(that would be a short bio of him/her).
Inspirations:

Enough airbrushes - I am back to oils. Here's my freak - he's more like mental hospital inmate but that's where we put freaks today - the asylums.

http://micamic.ovh.org/mixed_pics/serpent_man.jpg

Dear colleagues, here’s Henry Serpent, also known as Third-Eyed Henry. His skull contains tissue resembling fully functional human eye and a jaw with few teeth. He was born with this distortion and some authorities say that this may be remains of the twin fetus literally consumed by Henry during his very early stage of development. If that’s true we might expect to find in his skull some other traits of his twin. This theory may be confirmed only by vivisection or occasionally autopsy though. It might be as well some kind of mutation. Mentally Henry is very calm person but sometimes he suffers of severe attacks of anger like some other part of his nature is trying to get out of him. That might be dangerous for staff of our facility and even for himself.

"Mr. Harolds! John Daily from the Midnorth Monitor, I'd like to ask you some questions about your attraction -"
"You mean Willie?"
"Um, if that's what he's called-"
"Sure is. Willie... oh Willie, Willie, Willie..."
"Uh, so if I may ask a few questions"
"Shoot"
"Where does he come from?"
"Found 'em in the dump. Gerald n me were lookin for a new fridge for Frankie the midget to sleep in, when als a sudden we see this thing movin' over by the pharmasy stuff right? We goes over there and there's ol' Willie. Never saw nuthin like it in mah life...
Anyways he wuz just crawlin 'round, looked 'bit weak, couldn't do much. So I had these Oreos with me right? So I gives one to him and then the next, then all's you know he ates a whole carton of 'em! That perked him right up, ever since then s'all we been feedin' em."
"So... what does he do, what's the attraction?"
"What's the attraction?! He's a [censored]in' freak that's what's the [censored]in' 'traction!"
"Alright uh what about-"
"Though this one time he gave em a real show. Big guy from the audience he comes round and he's gonna give ol Willie a bop on the head right? Well s'soon as Wille got wise he goes up to 'em and rips both his arms off! Hooooooey! We had quite the night then..."
"Wait, so you mean he's dangerous?"
"Sure is."
"So, my god, I'm looking at him right now and... well why isn't he shackled?"
"Pfft, I would if he'd stop breakin' em. I need shackles for other shows too, no sense makin' him break more or more... besides, s'long as we feed him oreos he does whatever the [censored] we want."
"Alright well, what happens if you run out of oreos?"
" eb-... uh.... well I trys not to think about that..... jesus, FRANK! for christ sake I said watch 'em! He gots another monkey again!"

Found in a jar of formaldahyde, feeding on a fetus preserved for science. This Eigth Wonder is neither man nor beast. Somewhere in between, this oddity has come into being. An unfortunate incident with a common housecat has left this creature with only one good eye. Step back kids. Wow this is totally cool. I didn't know this got started up. Thanks for running this Grim! Now I feel like I truly have a place where I can let my hair down.

I don't know if I'll be able to make it on this one, but I'll certainly try. Woo hoo FREAKSHOW! Speaking of which, I was at the Hollywood walk of stars this weekend and lots to inspire for a Freakshow NOW. Like a 6'4" supergross Chewbacca that looked like he crawled out of a dumpster after an all night bender.

grenogs
August 28th, 2007, 07:03 AM
chewbacca reminds me of a yorkshire terrier, and when they get wet they look like a hairy rats. maybe chewbacca is just the heigher evolutionary stage of the yorkshire terrier, very similer in the same way we humans are to apes.

Grim Reaper

Manuel- I'll try. I've been already criticises for doing self-promotion here by our "dear" Chaos so I don't know if I should... And I've been working on my game a lot lately too.
Corspufo- I'm always glad to see people who like the idea of this activity. I'll be very happy to see you participate!
Grenogs- I like yorkshire terriers! My childhood neighbours had two of those and I loved them! (Until one day they got ran over by a car in front of my house)...

grenogs

Manuel_Calavera
August 28th, 2007, 10:08 AM
Ok, chewbacca is rather hard to run over, unless you drive AT-AT.

grenogs
August 28th, 2007, 11:04 AM
I dont think even an AT-AT could kill a chewbacca, they move so slow that by the time its leg hits the floor chewbacca has already stolen a bike and zoomed of to catch up with han solo

Hey guys, I am new to this thread and I am glad I find this activity, really looks like fun and a nice excuse to come up with gory and the sickest stuff. I'll make sure to stick around for future events.

Well, probably this is kinda cheating but I had made this design some years ago based on the different senses and when I read about the freak show, it remind me of it. This is the one I have done previously.

193798
---------------------------------------------------------
193799
195835

So this is the one revisited (excuse my dirty pencilwork :D). It kinda looks more like a monster than a freak (what are the differences anyways? ;)). Since the deadline is this Saturday, I doubt I can paint it by then, maybe some heavy pencil rendering...

So here is the description:
Ladies and gentleman, never in your lifetime you will meet a girl like this that will make you experience sensations that you never thought that existed. She will surprise you, astonished you, fill you with awe. You will never would want to get into the "pants" of this girl! I present you, Devalicious.

Are we allow to critique peoples work here? If not, my bad.

ChaoticKnight Like the whole poster idea and colors used. Though, I am confused whether he is the one that is melting or does he melts? Can't quite tell now.

Manuel_Calavera Like his face expression and pose, looks very comical and natural. Probably it is still a WIP, but I would suggest to define more the snake aspect.

Rhineville Dude, nice pencil rendering! Like how you use it to go across and model the form. That description/ story is really funny too.

VirtualSurreality Freakingly cute :D The candy bar is a nice addition.

Ok well if it was the Batman I saw on the Walk of Stars, Chewie would not only rip Batman's arms off and beat him to death with them, but he'd steal ol' Bat's lunch money for some booze.

Thanks Grim, I'll get my stuff up shortly.

i defenetly think chewbacca would win againsts batman, hes just a wierdo with cool gadgets, however if its was chewbacca against spiderman, then its a different story, i think spiderman would deffenetly have the upper hand, especially with all that web crap he has, plus with his spidey sences he could here chewbacca as soon as he had landed on earth.

mr fish
I remember once as a child going to the travelling freak show that would visit our town every year. And this year was no different as normal, you had all the usual freaks, the bearded lady, the strongman, the human lobstor, you know, the usual. But this year was slightly different in that there was some that were working and travelling with the show but weren't actually part of the entertainment. One man in particuler was who they would call Mr Fish. Mr Fish was defenetly odd in that he seemed absolutly normal as any other person you saw in the street, he was nice, well manoured and was very friendly, except he looked like he had a fish in his mouth that just couldn't quite get swollowed. Then one night i saw Mr Fish as usual, doing his work. Only this time he wasn't very talkative, he was actualy pretty creepy. But that could be due to the fact that his hands were covered in blood, and in those bloody hands he was carrying what looked like 2 fishing gaffs. And that was the last time i ever saw Mr Fish. A week later while reading a news paper about the local marine centre that was very populer becouse it had a live orca whale living there, the heading read " Missing Willie found, slashed to death by large hooks "

Hey guys, here's mine.

Final. Critz pleaze!

The carnie steps up to the podium, flashing a smile with his crooked teeth he belows, "Ladies and Gentlemen!!! Come one and come all to gaze with mouths agape upon Ratboy, the horrific amalgamation of man and beast!!! Or is he simply Ratboy, a tortured soul bound by chains simply to thrill onlookers and slack jawed idiots and of course you fine folk." The curtain is pulled away. Women scream, men laugh, and children cry. The chained and bound creature, winces and shudders against the jeers and catcalls, unable to escape this nightly exhibition, this prison. His cries are unheard, and tears are met with stones. He is Ratboy, the Tortured.

Thanks manuel, the hairs were quite quick and simple, the ones on the head is just a simple soft charcoal brush, and the hairs on his chin was a variable chalk brush with the texture knocked down to about 6%, all done in painter, except the blood splatter which was put in using photoshop.
Is Willy realy dead? i never new that. Who had him? the Norwegians or Japanese, or was it just captain kirk kidnapping whales again?

Grenogs has a nice concept and did a great job with the hair and the reflections with the hooks.I wish could finish mine for this week. corspufo has a very interesting character with a very funny pose that works well. Just don't forget to add the chains to the shackles. It could help if the character was actually looking at the cheese, that way the drooling will have more meaning.

Anyways, I was wondering about two things, are you guys doing this every week? and will dealines always be on saturdays?

corspufo i think you need add some depth, tone down the colour and strength of colour of the figures in the background, or even give it some depth of field by blurring the people, at the moment they seem to be clashing with mr rat. also sharpen up the chains, at the moment the bars in the background are in more focus. if you change these you should defentaly have a winner.

grenogs
August 31st, 2007, 10:38 AM
Also, what program you using? becouse if you use painter, it has a cool straight line tool which is perfect for those bars.

So I was done with it at that point, but looking at it this morning, I am seeing EVERYTHING that needs to be fixed. Thanks for giving me a hitlist. Also, I am using Photoshop, I haven't touched painter in almost 3 years. Also, I created the chains and cage in 3ds Max, but I painted over them in Photoshop so they didn't look so 3d.

I'm not happy with where it is right now, but I've still got time till the deadline. Thanks!

ChaoticKnight- good start but you never finished it! And most of all it's thumbnail so I don't think we'll be able to put it in the poll unless you post it as an url linked image...But still, I love the idea of the poster so don't blow it man!
Manuel Calavera- great image and nice idea reminding me of Dark Half by Stephen King, but of course in Dark Half the twin was only inside and didn't show on that guy's head so I guess you explored further what King has started.
Rhineville- fantastic pencils! Where would we be without mechanical pencil, eh? It's one of the most simple and most useful tools an artist may ever need. Love the attention to the details and rendering of the image. Also- very good backstory. You made a lot of effort and it shows.
Virtual Surreality- that's one scary mother******:) Kinda reminds me of one of your previous entries...but in a good way. It's almost like that purple mouth with few teeth in it is your trademark, something that makes your work instantly recognisable. And that single blind eye... Sweet:)
Armaldon- Deva, the crabwoman.... You have a lot of good ideas Armaldon and kinda packed them all in on one image:) But it works fine in a way because it makes you spend some time watching all the details which are very interesting. This is a kind of freak you'd never want to meet in your nightmares...'cos it's just so freakish!
Grenogs- I already praised your entry so I won't do it again... But it's just so great! The only crit from me is that hooks are a bit too shiny...but it's hardly an issue. It still rocks.
Corspufo- I'm glad you coloured it. It looked really good in black and white but looks even better in colour. Nice idea, nicely realised. The position of your rat boy is also quite cool. You can see that he really is unhappy... Great piece Corspufo!

thanks Grim, and the crit about the hooks is well noted,:) to be honest i didnt even think if the hooks were to shiny or not, at the time i just thought it looked nice, but thinking now, you could be right(my only excuse is that mr fish loves his tools so much that he polishes them every day) ;)
just want to mention your image, i can defenetly see the george michael resemblance, and i do like the lighting on him, is it spot light or moon light? i think you should give him some hair on his face though, posibly even a george michael type goaty, just to give a more dog like character.

Manuel_Calavera
September 1st, 2007, 07:23 AM
Ostrander: judging by your avatar Nightmare of the Week is the perfect match for you ;)
Grim: there're few anatomical mistakes on your Dog-man portrait that I can't accept even if I consider him as a freak: his teeth grow directly from his upper lip - even dogs has lips covering the gums that are base for teeth. His face is also too flat and forehead too short. And eyeballs definitely can't be so bright. I know it's a quicky but this details ruins it little bit.
corspufo: I like your mixed technique 3d-2d – I sometimes use it by myself but the difference between 3d and hand-made is too noticeable – try to use some smudge tool or some blur to make it looks more seamless – generally I agree with grenogs.

Manuel_Calavera

ChaoticKnight... And most of all it's thumbnail so I don't think we'll be able to put it in the poll unless you post it as an url linked image...

Update post in first page. Actually, just added a portrait of Deva, a closeup with more details. Thanks to Silent Hill wicked monsters for the inspiration and reference for such freaky textures.

Grim Reaper Thanks for the comments man. It's funny you called her Deva, the crabwoman, because I was seriously thinking on getting rid of that crab arm and adding maybe a tentacle or two, who knows :D

corspufo The ratman turned out well colored and all. The only thing that I don't quite understand is if it is in a cage with vertical bars, where does the diagonal bar's shadow come from? It's a small thing. But regarding to those, those drop shadows are way too straight on some parts of the body where they are cast one. They need to curve more since they need to following the surfaces where they are being cast on.

"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, tonight you will see things that no man was meant to see. Creatures that shouldn't be! A disaster of unnatural proportions in the progression of human evolution!! Prepare yourselves! And do not run, for if you do it will surely provoke this creatures most primal instincts to give chase...feast your eyes on the amazing grotesqueries of the unknown! Born half man and half cat! BEHOLD!! The Cat-Man!!"

Born Edwin Delacroix, October 17th 1887, in Wierton, West Virgina. Lizabell Stuben and Philip Delacroix's youngest child of 19 children was born with a rare unknown dis figuration that some say gave him the odd resemblance of a cat.
At 17, Edwin was asked by P. William Burgunsey to be a part of his Red Stripe Carnival Productions. Edwin received an $8,000 dollar sign on bonus upon his acceptance to be the star attraction in "Dr. Var E. Gross's Freakish Delights" showcase at the RSCP.
Billed as The Cat-Man, half man, half cat. Edwin became a celebrity overnight. Burgunsey traveled across most of the Eastern seaboard with Edwin as well as across the Midwest and Deep South and every show was sold out with spectacular earnings to raving critics and audiences alike. At the peak of Edwin's success, at age 34 he died in his sleep due to respiratory complications.

I was going to close this at the morning but then I saw Matthew WIP and decided to wait. I will close this one and prepare poll today before midnight for sure.

Phew... just made it, I think. Didn't have time to really go nuts on this one (or even make a background). I'll probably finish this some other time, as I had grand plans for it.
