I have to say that lukais and rusty have been big inspirations to me lately, there is much more talent on this board but I don't think i'm insulting anyone by saying that they have awe-inspiring skills.

Praise from Ceasar!
I'm glad I could help you rusty, your incredible drawings are a big inspiration.
lately I've been using a book called (guess what) "Anatomy for the artist" by a woman named Simblet, it's a great book with drawings and photos as well as transparent drawing overlays on photos. The arms were from Loomis on Anatomy.
It's really difficult for me to draw the figure from my imagination so I would try one, find a problem area and reference it, then try a non-ref figure agian. this really seemed to help

hi guys (n gals)
thanks fer the complements. I've been doing alot of anatomy studies but I'm ready to start drawing some creatures and such that make concept art so cool.
the frogman is part of a project for school, so I'll keep posting the sketches once I scanned em' up. I just looked at lung's thread (his stuff is amazing) and felt very lazy, but it made me draw more today and that's what this board is all about.
everyone - keep churning out the awesom stuff, it only gets better.

Rusty, Ruby and Jnorish: It's great to hear from you guys (since you so damn good, awesome updates btw) I actually did the robot over last christmas. I Tried to make it look practical, but would you really need a gasmask filter in space? and a groin plate? thought those just looked cool. as always your props fill me with a warmth in my heart (and my loins!...)ha
Behemot5: thanks man, just checked out your thread and really like the work, very sharp.
I'll try to update more often now, but unfortunatley all you get is sketchbook drivel, the robot was more of a finished piece(I hope that passes for finished).

thanks roger and endregan! (your persistance; and quality, on your boards inspire me to draw more) It's strange how that works. Alot of the time I will be intimidated by my sketchbook because i'll come up with crap if i'm out of practice (or just in general). But after you draw for a long period of time it becomes exciting because you start to see successes. This is amplified exponentially (like that nerd speak?) when you draw everyday. Almost everyone on this board gives themselves a hard time for making "crap" (not that it is, you get the idea) but have made huge bounds since the initial post. I've certianly been inspired to draw more since posting, and i'd like to think it's not a competitve thing. When I see some really kick-ass stuff it makes me think that the possibility for myself to do work of that caliber in the far future is there (with lots o work ofcourse).
now that my 2-cent has been deposited i'll get off my soapbox, but with that said here's some more shit. I've been drawing lots of little figure thumbs inspired by killing.people's thread., This really helps alot i would reccomend it

hmmm, steak your reply on my thread was something else thank you so much =) (i feels so special!) so i'm looking at your work closer than before and honestly you have it figured out the only thing that strikes me is how you shade, straight lines this way and that, try following the form ie the muscles which way the skin is being pulled. it will help to bring the form off the page and the lighting will feel real. do i make sence? ~_~ -peace
steak-tron
December 4th, 2003, 05:33 PM
endregan: thanks man, some are ref and some are not. - like the back muscles, my suggestion is to jump back and forth, and look at the skeleton. I didd'nt pay that much attention before this summer and my figures were crap.
Ruby: thanks for the suggestion, my father told me to do that a long time ago and I shrugged him off. After seeing alot more artwork on the board and elswhere I realize that you (and him) are right about the lines being descriptive of the surface. With the crosshatching all I do is describe the changes in value, which keeps everything flat. I now realize my suggestion to you was exactlly what I get stuck doing too often. I tried to make the hatches flow with the cloth in the last thumb of officer farragut. but I caught myself slipping into hatch mode.
thanks again -k
p.s. this makes even more sense now that I'm trying to draw cloth.

herez some mo' from the long time since last post.
I've been looking at kchen's tutorials and lemme say they are incredible.
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1432
(it's the only one I've looked at so far, so i need to check out the others). So some of these are copies, mostly where he is blocking in forms and showing them twisting in perspective, especially with the heads. In using his suggestions and trying to draw my own figures as shapes I feel like I have a tighter grasp on it (still needs lots of work). I would recommend trying this to anyone. Some are refs and some aint, but when I used a ref I tried to build it up in shapes and guide lines, something that needs to be done to get a solid form, this is probably why lots of my sketches look flat. enough blab, herez the draws. scans are bad too.

wow I was trying to go through from the beginning and I kept either laughing or saying wow thats great!
For one, the way you draw from the inside out is great. Makes it a good point how learning to understand the structure first helps the drawing.
Secondly, I love your comedic drawings, that darth vador thing made me laugh for quite a bit :)
Your creatures are great that you've been doing recently, I especially like the way you've done the one on the off color paper with the white highlights.

WOW. Way, way better!
Don´t take me wrong, that first creature was great -I would kill to draw muscles as you-, but basically was a boxer body with a funny jaw. This last row of creatures is 100 times more imaginative. Wicked!
I suppose the key is in your 3 steps method, that can sum up in: Look For Reference; it adds a whole new level of believability. However, I would add a 4th step: "Mix with talent" :)

Steak, I don't have any crits for you at all, you have a truly beautiful learning process. You have a superb understanding of the face and head, and I can see your understanding of the body growing and starting to take shape. I envy your skills my friend!
One thing I think would be super cool to see from you would be some more of the quick gesture sketches or contour things ... some more expressive figures as opposed to the great realism you've got ... which is excellent by the way :) Anyway, i'm rambling, I love your stuff, teach me lips!!!

INFERNOmunky: thanks dude! i still dont have half the amount of the greats, some people are pushing 20 pages on these sketchbook threads, thats alot of damn sketchin'...
bonedog: most anatomy is alike. I'm finding that once you have human anatomy down, it's easy to understand its application to different types of creatures, the muscles are the same, but the're different sizes.

I'd also have to say that going through your thread inspired me to pick up a ball-point and consider it as a serious sketching tool. I like the ease in which it moves around the page. Ink is also great training, sometimes I'm too hesitant with graphite because I know that I can erase.
I was curious to know if your talking about a concept job, or just a distraction? I used to draw on bathroom slips when I worked at the movie theater last year.
I'm glad the creatures are coming across as believable (they still need lots o' work), my thesis project is to make these fantasy creatures and illustrate them like they're real, with skeletal and muscular diagrams etc...

thank-you, it means allot coming from you. I want to be one of the first peoples to find out when you have published material. Soz I can purchase it of course.
here's some distraction drawings on my wacom, I don't use it enough because I'm bad with color. Hopefully it's something I'll work on when I'm out of school. Before then I should have lots of this creature stuff. Some of these ideas are starting to take shape and I have to say this is some hard shit to come up with. It's been mostly mixing animals up to this point, so hopefully I can get away from that. That is however the nature of the exercise - to make these things look real.
I'll have my sculpture soon, as soon as I stop procrastinating on CA...

2kre8: -thanks!
Yiako: thanks! I wanted to make these things look believable in the design, but my teacher thinks its not bizarre enough.
here is the direction i'm in now, i'm trying out some sort of thing that does'nt use normal conventions for terrestrial creatures (face, body, etc...) Its a challenge because I keep going back to the other end, and it takes a little research.
this thing would be a floater that converts the atmosphere into some sort of lighter that air compound (like helium) in it's sacs. Then it would blow the mixture out of the directional tubes for propulsion. The idea is that it would assist in some sort of cycle for another creature to convert the atmosphere back to its original state.

Your colors are looking real nice on that "old" sketch of yours. I really like your skecthbook, it shows alot of diversity + you have some nice monster concepts(always a plus). Some times your shading seems a bit heavy handed or your poses stiff, but other than that, solid stuff.

Agreed... pen flow really nice and sometimes I get better results than pencil for exactly the reason you stated.. cos pencil can make you hesitant. If you have a 'dont care' attitude to your pen work then things can start happening. That said I still dont think I'd try run with a hefty finished piece.. stakes are too high, mistake wise.

In the two coloured - I think the left one is better overall, but I think the bone colour definitely suits the main skeleton than the olive green you've used in the left one. The right one is simply garish to my eyes.
I would suggest for colours..
bone colours for the main skeleton, the earthy colours you've used for the jet and legs (although the darker red colour on the right image looks probably just as good for the jet) , and then make the eyes? and electrical bubble things stand out with brighter colours (no I dont mean fluorescent yellow or pink or anything like that, just enough that they stand out well, especially the bubbles)
I think the white streaks look much better.. the shape of them simply suggests white to me

Your creatures are great, they are strongly realistic. However I'm happy to see that you continue to push hard in other areas too, so you're not gonna be "the guy that draw fabulous creatures" but "the guy that draw fabulous. Period".

wow.. youre a big inspiration. Was browsing through your thread, and your studies are great, theyr just lovely. I love the way you do you studies and the way your educating yourself. Much respect for keeping on this track and practicing allot. I am doing the same and I am really digging the way you approach anatomy and such, now my hands itch, ill do my best as well. Give you a 5 star rating because I respect what your doing allot, keep going at it, your drawings are already really good, and your only improving that is obvious. Good luck !

Damn fellas! thanks for the positive encouragement, I feel freshened anew with a strong art buzz (makes me light in the head and step).
dakoscwash: thanks bro, I'm using a set of cool (as in temperature) prisma-color markers at 10,30,50,70, and 90%. then warm black. I'm going to Atlanta tomorrow to pickup more of the spectrum in both warm and cool. It's something i'm trying to get a handle on in figure drawing class.
metalwinds: thanks dude, yer absolutely right, I'm going to get some color in after I iron out these three creatures.
jackalanubis:thanks man, gonna post some more o' that guy soon.
yaiko: good to hear from you man! Yer compliments make me all tingly. I'm trying to keep well rounded but it's also sort of a by-product of not being focused enough, which I think I should. One can definitely get too specialized tho.
Jamaludin: thankyou for your kind words (I seein' stars...) It's really incredible when you can help someone get inspired. I feel I owe it to the members of the board after having taken so much inspiration. cheers dude.:chug:

steak, the more i look at your work, the more i want to see. you got some cool stuff going on here. id like to see you work on your lighting and value more.. .your reference pics are good, but your sketches could be pushed further. i realize that most of these are just quickies and such to get down ideas and stuff, but some real quick and bold rendering could really give your work a push. anyway, just something to think about. keep postin your rad ish

metalwinds: thanks dude, the end o' my schoolin' is drawing near so i fear that quick and crappy doodles are all my sketchbook consists of now. I am working on value in fig. drawing class. Lately I got a set of prisma color markers in gray values both warm and cool. I'll try to post some soon. crits always welcome from you sir, but the sketches of creatures are more about structure. My final project is more to design the creatures than artisticly render them, although I am trying to do that for the final presentation. I have a WIP with the creatures in an environment that i'll have finished in a few weeks.
thanks agian dude.

Jackal: thanks! yea, i felt like the functions needed to define the designs. I started out just trying to make them look cool but my teachers did a good job of making me really hit the books and do background research on functional living structures. the fish/dinosaur is definitely the weakest one. I thought about axing it from the show.
here are the preliminares for the designs that have'nt already been posted. I know most of these are shitty but I was trying to hammer out the ideas quickly. It's sort of the method my illus. teacher uses.

the scene w/ the multiple creatures interacting is bad-ass. it's really cool to see these sketches and preliminary drawings. I'm amazed that w/ your apparent knowledge of anatomy you still do all these studies. I bet you could construct an actual human body if you had the parts.
I take it you're referring to Murawski when talking about hammering stuff out quickly? Did you know that I didn't use erasers for about 2 years because of Murawski? Not that he said not to, but I just really bought into his loose method of drawing and didn't feel a need for erasers. He'd prolly kill me if he saw how small and tight I'm sketching these days.
Anyway, good update. Them markers is cool.

damn, this is instant reply and answer.
dako: I've been drawing from life for a long time, my father's a painter and we used to do life drawing together. While at school tho i've been taking figure drawing clases to fill my electives. Luckily there's an open life drawing thing at the local museum. Books help alot too. I try and isolate problem areas, then focus on them (like now). Try and make your own diagrams instead of copying from books - it's like taking your own notes. This is what Lung_bug does a lot, much to his advantage. Also draw people from life, portraits of your friends, or be a coffee shop guy and creep everyone out by drawing them.
just draw them a ton [figures] while keeping in mind whats going on [I]under the skin. It's tuf but will help tremendously.

insane: I can't really give you a straight answer on that one. I think back during the big bang I got too reliant on drawing from references. Only fairly recently have I really tried to break from that crutch. What I've learned - it's hard as shit. Only a few people really know anatomy inside and out. People that come to mind are Marko, Kchen, Dan Milligan, Jon Foster, Brom, Rockwell, Wyeth, the list goes on. I do know that these guys have been doing this there whole lives and it takes a huge amount of skill that is only built up through study. I'm also trying to intentionally put my characters in positions i'm unfamilliar with so that i hit two birds with one stone. It usually ends up with me making shit and getting frustrated, but maybe i learn from it. hopefully.
gonna try harder now tho... thanks dude.

oneway I learned to draw anatomy without reference is by doing it over and over until I got a hang of it..fear of not using reference will hinder you from being confident... I usually draw people in public a lot, so it gave me some stuff to remember about what a body can and can not do...I have breakdancer for friends and some of them helps me determine what poses that can not be done and certain limitations of the human body......I think you have enough knowledge in my opinion and I wasnt giving you a hard time my friend..just wondering, cause I would love to see your insane imagination be used to save the human kind...

hey buddy. hope you dont mind, but i have some advice for you as far as applying your knowledge of anatomy and really learning it (i read your response to insane visions). what i have found that works.. for me. ..is to do the studies, but break them up into sections (right now im studying arms and shoulders), and get one area down before you move on to the next. also, make sure you apply what you are drawing. .. for example, i draw some figures from reference and then plug in the bones and muscles in the figure (for the area im studying) without looking at the anatomy studies and such. then afterwards, check what you have done, for accuracy. another thing, dont just study the muscles on the outer surface. ..study the inner workings of the muscles and how they react in certain movements. many times there are underlying muscles that you dont really see that have a big effect on the anatomy. ..which will really improve your understanding of what youre studying. once you have learned the anatomy, it will come freely in your drawing and you wont need to think about it.. . everything will be intuitive (justin sweet is a perfect example of this).
hope this helps some.. i really dig your anatomy sketches, btw. i hope to see many more in the future, and youll definitely be seeing a ton from me.

rich: thanks dude. I know your not giving me a hard time. I definitley have my work cut out for me, and drawing from life outside of class is something that has to happen soon... Your pretty lucky to know some breakers. That would definitely let you see the extent of possible positions. As far as saving the human race...
they never had a chance :firedevil
thanks bro.
metalwinds: more advice the better. A systematic approach is exactly the way to do it. Something I need to get back in the swing of doing. And the body needs to be considered as a machine, with every part necessary for the whole design. Your absolutely right about understanding more than just the superficial anatomy, and as always your critiques are always welcom 'round these parts.
we'll compare notes in texas. -thanks bud.

Be it art, life, or anything. I actually think i've improved a little since graduating, and during the thesis project i had a lot of misgivings about my ability. I am by no means where i want to be but as i said before i think everyone feels this way.

I was leafing through the trusty anatomy book and found a page out of ol' Leo's anatomy diagrams. "surely the muscles don't actually look this way" i sez to my self. Kizzzzimp! Yikes! I really like that last post o' yours. The three-eyed beast man is great, for some reason things with three fingers really scare me, I'd be pretty horrified of of it even it it didn't have three eyes, but the absence of 2 digits and the addition of the eye creeps me out alot. Dunno if thats what you were going for, but I likes!
Anyway, I digress. Since I have been looking at your and everyone elses work, Ive really been tryin to kick it into high gear. Following your advice Ive tried to adopt the ol' ballpoint, which is something I used to work alot with in Murawiski's first class, but for some reason I dropped it. Its great, and think what you will but I dont feel like its really cheating at all. I can really see improvement, and gradually I'm weaning myself off of the eraser. Keep postin the pen stuff, Id have to say that youre the master. Or in your case I guess it would be mizaser. Booya.
Me loves! We should do a little of this  before you're out of Athens forever!

rich: thanks, I'll see what I can rustle up.
van: behind whateva':)
kerry-iru: thanks. I'm not as good at making twisted shit like insanve visions and others, it takes alot of juice mixed with torment, dropped in a glass of beer. But i guess i have that stuff. Your not cheating when you use a pen, but it should be used as a learning tool, you can't really get a refined finnish with it. i.e. in the end it still looks like a bic (but is that bad, or am being an art snob?). Glad to hear your drawing. we'll hang soon, i'm still stuck here indefinitely.
zao75231: if ladies you want ladies you shall have. I think it's actually harder to draw ladies, because the need to make the line work elegant is so much more (if that makes sense)
these are prelims for a friend's band flyer. He wanted it to be sort of like the Emerson, Lake and Palmer album tarkus, which features a half armadillo, half tank. I thought id try to bring it up to date as a mobil howitzer. final comin' soon.

 fuck yeah dude. that design is sweet. .. my only crit is that the tail is bothering me. .. maybe if it was functional or did something it wouldnt bother me. .. .but then again, maybe not. something to think about.

dako: thanks man, i'm trying to kick it up but i've got a long way to go. u coming to the bonanza in texas?
metalwinds: thanks man. I'ts a wierd concept, i see what you mean about the tail. I'll color it upon your request. :chug: cheers to Austin.
van: i'll post the original album cover when i get the final done.
insane visors: thank you
Groover: thanks man!
So i actually looked at an armadillo and thought the tank didd'nt do an accurate representation. I've reworked it in sketches and started on the final, please critique as you see fit.

Damn, that last dump is nice. The armadillo is awesome haha. I'm lovin' the loose pen sketches you did. About austin, god, I would love to go, but alas, I am 16. If in a year or two these workshops are still going on (they better be), I'll be right there with ya.;)

The dillo is delicious! I found on my computer the other day some dillo skeletons that you took with my camera, and while I deleted most of the bugs I still have it if you want it. This might be a streach...but tank armadillos, armadillos live in texas...either a political statement or youve got Austin on the brain! (I kid I kid...I'm just jealous thats all!) Anyway, lookin good!

did I spot Ichiro Suzuki and Carey Carter in some of your sketches? methinks me did.
armadillo-tank is cool. I actually like the wider, more spaced out plates you had on your first dump of tanks, though they could pass as generic armor plating and not necessarily armadillo. The second, referenced batch certainly look more dillo influenced. Maybe something in between? I guess it all depends on how dillo you want it to look. Yea, I used 'dillo' as an adjective. Don't forget to call Daniel tomorrow. or yesterday. or whenever.

summer pudding: thanks, your statements a little enigmatic though...
endregen: thanks dude, fight the good fight.
Yina: thanks! I'm glad folks [you that is] from the other side of the planet are joining the party.:)
dakoscwash: If this thing goes off the way i think it will, you'll have bigger and better workshops to go too (i'll probably still be going too;) ) -thanks for the compliments.
Keepiru: ahhh, seems like just moments ago we spoke... oh, we did. I think i've got the pic, but thanks for saving it, and the relation is totally intentional, of course.
el-money: I'm not sure who Ichiro Suzuki is tho the name seem familiar. That one sitting looks like carey, but it aint. Just another chum with a beard. The last part is confusing too, do i need to call this Daniel at some point. Does he know my horrible secrets? Is the Jade Idol safe? so many questions unanswerd... Anyways i'll try to call you soon so we can figure out how to travel in this crazy world.
Finally finished. I like what came out but I still need to color it at some point. Trying to re-do the ol' website for now.
