Hey guys/girls,

*edit 4-24-03* Thank you everyone for the feedback. Sorry for the late reply. Here are some more stuff from SG as well as some other projects...look below.
_______________

it's been a while since i last posted here. Work has kept me busy....hadn't had much time to draw my own stuff.

Here are some concept drawings done while i was still working for Blur. It's for a StarGate related project (it's not released yet...so i won't go into details). We actually hired John Wallin Liberto (CaptainFlashgarden) to do some production paintings over my sketches. He did an awesome job! Hey John, if you are reading this, can you post some samples? =)

i have a stack of drawings from this project...i'll post more soon. Have a great weekend everyone.

More SG stuff....yeah...i know, floating islands again....*not* my idea....=)

Here are some sketches done for a korean company...i stopped doing work for them because of a language translational confusion.......from what i can gather, it was some kind of RPG fantasy thing.

http://64.246.38.49/artbyfeng/forum/feng_sketches.jpg

Here are some sketches from Epic's GDC demo of their next game (no more info or CliffyB will kill me) I got permission to release these for the SW article. I have a bunch more including weapons and such, but i guess i'll have to wait until the game is out.

It's most likely this new stargate spinoff of a spinoff.

Stargate: Atlantis. This series centers on a new team in the Stargate SG-1 universe. A secret base left by the originators of the Stargate is found in the most unlikely of places: on Earth, buried within the ruins of the legendary civilization of Atlantis. A new team travels to a distant universe, where they find a primitive human civilization threatened by a sinister new enemy. MGM Television produces.

Very cool, I see you are putting some tribal jewelry styles into the costume designs. If you want some ideas for other stuff you can check out; http://www.organicjewelry.com/ & http://www.bmezine.com/ritual/bme-ritu.html (<--graphic)

the envoriments are very well done. the ones with color are so much stronger then the ones without, i think you should try to start doing that with all your pieces. blue shadows and warm light works very well. It's a shame you didn't do that to the other ones.

The loose lineart ones are VERY nice. I would like to see tons more of those.

Keep up the good work, your coloring has improved 10 fold since i last saw you dabble in it.

speaking of markers are these tria? if so are you using something acid based to wash them? you tend to get a much better blend in your marker drawings then i see from most people.

sorry to bring up the oh so commen "OMG WHAT DID YOU USE TO MAK THESE?" to your post... but i love you :hearts:

Two things:

1) I am in the Illustration program at Long Beach State and my teacher says that markers are not a legitimate tool. I have just started usign them, following your tutorial examples Feng, and I am inspired once again to prove him wrong.

2) I didn't know you worked at Blur. I am sending a character animation demo in this week - do you know if they are hiring or if its going to be shelved?

Always nice to see a Swede being this great....and especially one a couple of years younger than myself... doing such marvelous pieces...that I got a couple of years of practice before I can do... always nice to see :chug: . Just hope (for my sake) we never compete for the same jobs hehe!
jävligt bra, jag är avundsjuk :)

Feng:
Great work!
Just one question, how big are the originals? I have problems with the vanishing point always being to close to the image (makin those too extreme perspectives, and still I work on A2 to get the vanishing point far away from the image , mmh), so how big do you work to set those nice perspectives?

As a lowly art student i can not express how impressed i am. Feng, in all honesty you are the type of artist i want to be. Fast and creative, working quickly with thumbnails, yet being able to slow things down and render out a fantastic picture. To tell you the truth, im not quite able to do either of those things. But i will be better than you!!! It may take many, many years!! but you will see!! you will!!

oh boy I'm probably going to get spanked for this but I have to be a bit of a critic here. I too have this same problem and that problem (problems are subjective of course) is I think that we bothe have an inclination to over depend on the use of cylindracle forms to move our eye through a design. I've been trying to get away from this, It's been tough for me, I 'm sure it will be effortless for you but I feel like the use of can shaped protruding objects has been over used in genneral for the past 15 years. Just an opinion.

FENG,

I have a question. If you don't mind me asking, how long does it usually take you to come up with a "good ruff sketch idea" for a ship or any other complicated vehical design. In the work environment, do you sketch a great deal misellanious ideas before your happy with the one good one, or do you usually nail the final ruff quick sketch on the first 5 or ten sketches before comitting to doing the final? I'm currently analyzing how long one should take at the idea ruff sketch stage before committing to doing the final. I thought this would be helpful to know how long it usually takes you to come up with an all around great design in the sketch stage before finishing the final. Also, how long does it usually take you to do the tight finish on a compicated design?

I've look at some of your work, as well as Doug Chiang, and Ed Lee, and ofcourse Sid Meads work and a few others every now and then to check up on how I do things versus how everyone else does. I just thought I'd ask you a few tips in case I'm missing anything in my design to finish process.

I really admire your attention to detail and creativity. I checked out your website (I really like your tutorial and the fact that you share your knowledge and experiences. That is a comendable quality among artists!) I would like to know a little more about how you go about your perspective. Do you use a grid method or just use vanishing points. I feel this is my weekest point as an artist, and would very much like to get to the level of percision that go into your pieces. Thanks!

Those StarGate enviornments are gorgeous!
