View Full Version : Teen Challenge #33: Turn around for a Bounty Hunter.

Evil_Sloth
August 11th, 2007, 01:52 AM
This topic will be handy for all those who are going to be working for video games, movies and such. Make an awesome piece for the portfolio.

I'm sure most of you have never done one of these before.
But I know you've for the skills to pull it off.

The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.

The Topic:
Turn around bounty hunter. You must show a FRONT, SIDE, and BACK view of your design. Preferably in a neutral pose, think about if you were handing this to a 3d modeler.

The bounty hunter can be from any age, doesn't have to be a Starwars version. Can be male or female, creature, robot or man.

Please add a small description or storyline. We don't want a five page essay but make it nice, brief, and to the point. Especially if there is something in your design which needs explaining.

Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.

The Deadline:
Saturdat, August 25th at midnight PST
Two weeks. Plenty of time. Even if its a sketch its good to show your ideas.

Yey another challenge...haha you know when i first glanced at the Title For This thread, i thought it meant a Turn Around as in a bounty Hunter who had a sudden change of heart and became Social Worker or something?? hehe..anyway should be a good one.

Lines look a little shaky Angus, but your shading is really bringing it out and it's looking good. Nice texture on the armour.

I'm working on something

The lines were smooth then I increased the size which made them all ruff. I'm piling a lot of stuff on top of them so they'll smooth out anyway.

Here's my progress for now.
I resized the mechanical foot as it was oddly proportioned.
I'm lost on ideas for the cape. Maybe some embroidery like the kilt? I'm also going to include a non-helmeted head shot.

It's crit time :P !
@ Jake; I think it's important for you to keep the design simple, try to use textures and glow effects very sparingly. It's better to just paint the stuff in with a simple round brush at the point where you are now I think. The busy background in the last image you posted is kkindof distracting. You could try to use a gradient for background in all your images. It usually looks very calm, and it's not as flat as a single colour would be.
Try to vary the light colours from the dark ones. For example, when you use green as a highlight, don't use it as a shadow too :)
And last but not least; the dark outlines look a little messy, if you have them on a separate layer, try to erase the blurry outlines so you have clean readable lines left. Also you can try to vary in lineweight, so that on the darker parts the line is thicker than on the lighter parts.
Well, I hope I helped a little. I'm looking forward to seeing your final.
@ TheDonut; nice face :) it's a little dark I must say, you could try putting some highlights on the nose and cheekbones to make it a little more interesting. Otherwise, it's looking very nice so far!

I'm not gonna say I'm joining in this time because if I do, I probably don't :P So maybe I'm gonna enter now when I don't sign up for it :P

@ TheDonut; yes, but more because of more detail.. I was thinking.. The main problem you have with her at the moment is that she doesn't look very tough.. Try making her eyes a bit bigger (wider), and narrowing them a bit vertically so she looks a little daring or something. Right now you can see most of the iris, that gives her a sort of frightened, sad look. You could also try to have her mouth have a little more expression. I'll try a paintover tomorrow if I have time, to show you what I mean :) Keep a mirror at hand and see which expressions could work. :) But also, as you need to do a turn around, don't spend tóo much time on the face ^^ it has to look right, but not over detailed, because in the full version you won't see all the details.

Ah well.. Gonna sleep now..

You're right - I'm tinkering with the expressions at the moment. I don't want to go all GRRR-kind-of-tough with her because that's not the character I have in my head.. I'm going to go for more of a quiet determination kind of thing.

I'm working on the side and back views as I go along, they're well underway, don't worry ;)

Thanks for the comments, appreciate it :)

@ TheDonut (again :P): I did a little paintover on the expression mostly. She probably looks a little too mad now for your taste, but well ^^ I hope it can help you in some way. I made the eyes a little wider, narrowed the face a little from the left, and made the chin a bit less pointy. Also I put the eyebrows a bit lower. Ah well, you can probably see it for yourself :P

She doesn't necessarily look mad. I think that the expression that is being used now is more sad, troubled, depressed, etc. To make her look a bit more angry try lowering the brow but keeping the ends up to make it in sort of a wave shape. Also narrow the eyes and even raise the corners of her mouth as if she's snarling.
The way you have the brow compressed is from both sides. Anger would be only the inside corner.

A more appropriate title for this challenge would of been orthographic view of a Bounty hunter

I might contribute something, fooling around with ideas.
BTW Orthographic would actually be front, top and side, not back front and side.

Well then its an orthographic turnaround :P
But it depends on what subject the orthographic view is attached to. As an orthographic view it would be of all sides and views so Front, rear, sides, top, bottom would all be included.

Alright I apologize, in engineering orthographic view is most often front, side and top so I guess that is where I got confused. I guess I was not thinking of the broader term.

Bounty hunting seems to be a serious business...

Antonio
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v675/iirto/Image1.gif
Antonio is a relaxed kinda guy, not about fuss and big guns. In order to be able to walk around while carrying a knife or two, he wears a big shirt and keeps everything attached to his body. What he has with him changes according to mission; sometimes just bottles of water and some food, sometimes guns and fancy stuff like that. In order to get these swiftly, the shirt is fully open in the back, only attached with ...buttons? Help me, you know, the sort that you can just... pull open...
To ensure a service with a smile, Antonio has sewn an eternal smile on his face. He walks barefoot to maintain the muscles in his feet and his good balance.

Guh, I'll need to rescan that thing if I find the time... and I'm missing the damn black border!
While drawing this I realized it probably seems like a shortcut from drawing any weapons........... but uh, at least I had fun. :confident

The MEZ-07/BOUNTYHUNTER unit is often used by the rich and powerful to settle suburban debts and disputes. They can be distinguished from humans by their ridiculous upper body proportions, strangely deep robotic voices and when they start walking through brick walls and unleashing shotgun and machine-gun fire from the palms of their hands.

I gotta get in on one of these before I get too busy. And while I'm still a teen. I agree with Angus, that'd be cool. Or maybe just a self-portrait in general.

Another idea similar, would be, a redesign of the human figure or face. I'm talking, scrap the human body, and invent your own. That might get a little hard though, the self-portrait'd probably be better.

Chance.
September 6th, 2007, 06:12 PM
I say go for a full blown illustration or an environment for the next challenge. Its good to shake it up so that everyone has a chance to shine.

Man, there are a lot of new people since I was last in here. Looks like things are slowing a little though, we need a good topic to draw some more people in. An aggressive marketing campeign! Why don't we make ourselves more official like the -OW's.

Perhaps we should design a TC logo, but put some restrictions, like a graphic solid tone illustration y' know? Like the conceptart rooster. That would be a fun teen challenge.
I know that something like that has been done already. Let's do it with a purpose this time though. Time to revamp TC!

Well I have myself all motivated now. Have I succeeded in doing the same for anyone else?
