well i haven't been on this site for a long time. How long has it been? Probably a year or so! So i decided to start fresh and fire up a thread where i can post all my (in my opinion) decent shots i took and ran thru photoshop. Feel free to comment on them (negative and positive feedback welcome). I know some of the stuff has been posted already, so i will hopefully get a chance to get new shots in soon.
Enjoy!

Pretty nice photos here. :) Overall, I think you should work on your compositions more. On the most recent one, I really like the blue/black contrast, but I think it could be sharper because it looks a little blurry to me. Did you have a long exposure time?

that blue/black photo was taken before i got my S3IS so i had an old sony cybershot compact camera. I think i used auto settings for that shot but the specs were:
F/2.8
1/6 sec exposure
6mm focal
80 ISO
the problem was that i didn't have a tripod, so i crouched down and stayed as steady as i could, that's probably why it's a little blurry.
Also, could you explain to me what you mean when you say i should work on my compositions more? Sorry i'm not an expert so i dont know every term in the book :s i'm in an endless learning experience when it comes to photography.
Note: the only photo taken with the S3IS so far in this thread is the last pic in my first post (the one with the statue of the 2 babies) the rest have been taken with my old sony cybershot

Not really an expert term, but a composition is the arangement of the subjects/elements of your photos. Most of yours are centered or have something distracting in the way. By working on your compositions, you can use different angles and view points to make a seemingly boring subject highly interesting and also eliminate most of the intrusive objects in your photos.
However, it is alright to center for some photographs, but not all. :) Happy shooting!

i see now. another way to focus on the subject and eliminate the intrusive objects is by using a low aperture setting which thus blurs the background and keeps only the object in center focused.

here's one i took today. I took the shot with the camera set to aperture mode F/2.7, 1/40sec auto exposure, in super macro mode with sephia setting enabled.

here are 11 shots i took summer 2006. my first time messing around with a sephia look via PS, so the tone of the coloring is a bit different in each picture.

'romania_1.jpg' and 'romania_2.jpg' are very nice! Especially in nr 2 the composition is very satisfying. I also liked 'romania_5.jpg' very much.
I agree that your compositions have improved quite a bit!

Nice ones. :)
I like the focus on "Dear Fidel." :) Just being nit-picky, but I would have preferred the front to be in focus more.
I think "bonsai_tree" could use some cropping to help with the negative space overload.
I really like "romania_5" and "romania_10," but I think the higlights in both are a little dull.

your friend took a good picture, also shows how much subtlety in toning can do. the windmills are great though, diggin the windmills

thanks for the comments guys, and keep em coming!
I do have a question:
purplerose: how much would you personally crop to make it reduce the negative space overload?

Thought I could show it better visually... rotated, flipped and cropped. Hope you don't mind. :)

i don't mind at all, considering i'm a visual learner. Wow it really does look better like that. I can see now how in my picture the background really does draw focus away from the subject. I'll consider this next time i post something that would potentially need cropping! Thanks!

Thanks! If there's one thing i have learned from you, it's this:
Before, i was skeptical about cropping because i would be losing the "background information" and "original feel" of the photo, but now i have learned that the object of interest is of more concern, and all attention should focus on it, thus it may be necessary to crop out the excess jargon. :)

well i just thought that i would spend some time and have a look though these. I think that some of the strongest composures image wise are to be found with the sepia photos, most of them have a nice subject with a nice DOP and work very well with the rules of composure.
the man in the cart has got to be my favert, i just wish that the photo was taken from a higer view point!! but its a still a great photo.
I think that your last set (and please dont take this the wrong way) are a dissapointment to me. looking at the standerd of the images in the rest of the thred they let the side down a little. Mainly because the subject isnt great, but mostly because there looks to have been no effort go in to the composure of the image. Its just all there for you layed our center fraim?
Well i hope that this hellps a little. Keep on snapping and i want to see more updates!

as long as i get feedback (be it positive or negative) it will help me get better. so don't worry about putting down this photo or that photo! I do want an honest opinion! The problem i have is that where i live there isn't really anything interesting, so i have to either use photos i took on vacation, or try and make something up at home. But i'll see what i can do, there's got to be something i'm missing out on, i probably just haven't found it yet!
P.S. sam i hope your recovery goes smoothly!

i had to do a little blurring on the gold tip in the big section behind the black ring because it was a little choppy cuz it wasnt exactly clean. there were little dust particles and it was a little dirty so i patched and smoothed that out. it may have taken away from the crispness tho.

whoa, nice macro.
If you could clearly read the brand name it would look like a product stock photo.

Cute grasshopper. :) The DOF may be a bit off on the head. Did it jump away after you took the picture?

no it actually stayed still for me to take like 6 pictures. And ya, you're right, the head is out of focus. That's because i aimed at the torso. I should have thought of that to begin with! I got a few more shots if him maybe i'll post some up if i think they're any good.

Wow, nice shots.
The grasshopper is my favourite, even if the head is a little blurry.

I never knew what people meant when they said "composition." So that is what it is?
