phew! my first term is finally over and sweet jebus the last few weeks were something...
this was for my life drawing final. i went a little overboard...

the drawing is about 7 feet or maybe a little bigger. to get a sense of the scale:

i doubt anyone cares but here's the low-down. for my life drawing class, principles of drawing with gayle donahue i ended up doing very poorly in the sketchbook, like only 12 out of 50 master copies and such so i wanted to do a good job with the final...
i also wanted a good final because, well, i've really fucked up the term and i just wanted to.. i don't know.. to do something nice, as if to make up my screwups.
so on the second to last week i began work on it.. even though i had a hardcover book project due the same week. i figured i'd do a nice 12 hour drawing or something.. shouldn't take longer than a day right?
cept i start having visions of grandeur. i originally planned on having a friend model for me but she changed her mind and i didn't have anyone else (even asked my sister! eww)... and i didn't want to work from a photo at this point cause i didn't want to spend all this time on another person's photograph.
so i decided to do a self portrait... which for most of u guys is not a big deal... but like i'm not exactly buff and a year ago i NEVER EVER would have done something like this (too embarassing) but for some reason.. i dunno i guess i was just caught up with the whole thing.. i decided to go for it.
anyway i get the idea to do a life sized drawing with multiple sheets of stretched and double gesso'd paper. this turns out to be a BAD IDEA. well good for the final look, but bad in terms of time and effort because it took FOREVER. i camped out at school - it became my second home - trying to make the surface... trying to figure out the materials and methods needed for something this big and complicated. it took me almost 3 days straight (maybe hour or two of sleep) to prepare the surface alone.. then finally the day before the final i begin the drawing!
the drawing itself, compared to the prep work didn't take very long. maybe about 12 hours straight through. i had to put a piece of charcoal on a stick to even attempt to draw it and get proportions to be right..
the day i finished it i had to start working on my design book which ended up being half-finished (aargggh so pissed me off) and all i was left with was a very burned-out me...
but it's all over now.. and i guess i can learn from my mistakes and shit. at least, in the end, i have some really kick ass work i can feel proud about (even if no one else feels the same, the final critique was a little... anticlimactic).
yay
