Again... I recently started participating here at CA after a couple of lurking years and I don't have too many interesting studies to show. I will add throughout the weekend. Here's something to get me off of my ass and motivated to keep something updated. Crits and comments welcome.

This is a journey and I'm not sure which direction I would like to head in yet. I hope to find help here. This place is just amazing.

I shall start with my cow entry.

Some photos. Really sorry for being too lazy to scan. First are my own, fine art and bridgeman studies. Second is a pose of a friend gone horribly horribly out of hand with a little recreational beverages we shared.

Whoa almost missed this sketchbook, and all I can say is WOW. Your linework is super slick and your colors work very well with them. I like the process you posted with your cow entry too, and the woman from post 3 is nicely done especially the skin tone.

I haven't been posting here for too long either but welcome to the forums, and if you're still thinking about what direction to go, from what I've seen here so far I'd say you're definitely heading somewhere great.

By the way are all these at their original resolution? I'd be interested in seeing some close ups on them, with the dark color palette in your colored works some of the fine details are lost, but thats just me, either way mighty fine work here.

Oops no. I scaled down the speedies and I usually work between 300 and 400dpi for lined work. Heh. Sorry! I shall try and see what I can do. Maybe post some detail snippets or links to higher rezes.

A warm welcome. Thanks guys. I hope to submit things new for critique if possible in the next day or so.

To be honest I wish I can losen it up some. Maybe I can try different postures and hand positions. *snort*

As far as the pencil work, I'm not really sure to be honest. I do know that finalized pencil works are done on high brightness/high smooth marker paper. Its the best for me when being gentle with values and has a great range. The smoothness handles texturing and erasure effects amazingly as well. No trace of lines or smudging when careful. Kind of discovered this by accident one day. Its preference still...

The downfall to this as you guys know is its thin. You have to be careful because it dents easily. I give it support on board once done.

hohohowow... thanks guys. I will go to the Crit section soon with a full digi work.

How many years have you been seriously working at art?
here.

Seriously art for the past year. I didn't really do studies before that and I suffered for about 2 years without it. So 3+ altogether.

I do have a question, how long does a piece take you?
Ah, full digitals take between 15 and 40 hours based on complexity or time I have outside of work. Sketch sheets an hour or so. Pencil works between 5 and 15 hours.

First off: amazing works, very fresh, done acuratly and with a cool style

Yeah. I'm hoping more lifedrawing will help me. Or if you have some helpful advice that would be great. :D Thanks for the crit though. They're always welcome!

this „problem“ might arrise becuase you certain style when useing pencils
which is that you use few (out)lines to create the basic shapes which are then filled with light shadeing to create depth

when you want a achieve a different look for your drawings there are 2 basic ways to do so:
1 - focus on lines more
use lines to define not only basic shapes but about every detail you want to show
series of lines can mark darker areas and line variation (in thickness and darkness) should be a focus
this is best to be used with a soft pencil or charcoal even

2 - focus on shadeing:
instead of working from outlines you start with light grey areas and build your drawing from that geting darker and darker
it's pretty hard to do so imo
lines can be used to create emphasis here

anyhow I hope I was able to help you out a little
cu Infinit

edit: I gathered most of my conclusions about your style from your drunken life drawing pics

Ouu so it's a giftart all this time? I wonder whose could it be. It can't be Wade's can it? XD

Anyway I do agree with jdeegz that your style has the same appeal as a designer's work. Not so much that they are less of an illustration, but that your placement of the elements in your polished subjects seem to be right where they ought be to produce enough visual interest. But like my lecturer once told me, we're all designers in our own right. Plus your concepts rock.

Now get your nose out of those books and finish that ninja picture, demmit (jk)

That was a great move on flipping the walk-through gif art piece. the composition is much tighter that way and the piece is coming along nicely. I'm really intrigued as to who the character is, looks very much like a Sorcerer Conjuring up magical power not a ninja like Wulfsbane assumed. Why would a ninja carry such an elaborate heavy head ornament. Ninjas are extremely stealthy, killing machines of great agility, has to be light on his/her feet and mostly wear black gear to blend into the night.
It would be nice of you to name this piece so that people would know exactly what their waiting to see finish. Awesome!, awesome! WIP, thanks for sharing this.

Actually, Mr. Carbon, I didn't assume :) The artist herself told me what it was. I suppose a more accurate description was "ninja overlord". The average ninja is very much like what you'd describe but that shouldn't stop us artists from creating our own from imagination. Dark fantasy is gatling's realm, it is.

The way I see it in my eyes is that the character is a veteran (retired) ninja who has ascended beyond that of just stealth, agility, espionage and some such. Rather he has become more of a mystical force that has tapped into the spirit of what it means to be an assassin. Sorta like those supernatural no-something-jitsu stuff characters in Naruto do but less cheesy.

And right again that he is conjuring... A name? Ahhh well we shall see! Sorry I don't have anything to upload! I just wanted to thank everyone for the kind words and helpful advice.

Wulfsbane: Its not for Wade. The only art he appreciate is the making of sandwiches. Still a good buddy, however.

Amazing work. I love your style, really inspirational.

...Ninjas are extremely stealthy, killing machines of great agility, has to be light on his/her feet and mostly wear black gear to blend into the night. .

Actually, historically ninjas didn't always wear black. They wore whatever they needed to blend in. So if they were in a snowy environment they would be wearing white, or if they were in a redwood forest they would be wearing a shade of dark red. They even sometimes wore common clothing to blend into a city street surrounding...

...but thats historically speaking. :)

Wulfsbane
October 23rd, 2007, 11:34 PM
Hey, you finished the character concept piece. I knew your digital was going to look great presented alongside your pencil sketching. The detail on the books in particular is inspirational. You should really consider doing a real life book jacket design one of these days. I know I'd get a kick out of it XD

Just one little crit though, the grip handle of the sword just where it meets the guard doesn't appear as cylindrical as it does near the pommel. I believe if there was more depth of shadows there it could make some significant difference. Something to indicate the distance between the materials (guard and grip). It was the first thing that stood out to me.

Great pencils man, your rendering is great, I don't think you're taking all the juice from them while going with color. Well, actually this page is somewhat of and exception (not so good pencils, and a good painting). I would like to know more on how you make this cool shadings on your drawings. Do you erase? do you make your drawings first and then enlarge them with those boxes with the light inside? I'd really would like to know.

thanks. No school mate. I wish though but money or chance for assistance is spent. =/ As far as learning, its a neverending process by studying my favorite artists, self study and trial and error.

No lightboxes. Erasing is part of the detailing for meticulous designs yes, but more pencil shading however. If I could record it, I would.

Thanks for all of the support. I shall try to be more focused on pencilling again soon.

love your work!!!

just wondering what the specs are on your PC, for me when I'm working on a big image PS stops working properly and my PC will even freeze up on me. so I'm sure I need to up grade but I'd like to get an idea of just how much "ram mem and what not" I will need?

Jokerrabit:
depending on your version of Photoshop, your PCs specs and the size of your images, that all could vary. I still use 7 sometimes. Painter is my program of choice however and that can be more fickle than ps.

Here is what is on the back of Photoshop CS3 for specs.
Pentium III or 4 processor
384MB Ram (1 GB recommended)
3GB of disk space - more for additional add-ons, 1GB on primary disk
1024x768 resolution
