Right, so I've been looking at the sketchbooks here for a long time and now my scanner is fixed it seems there's no excuse for me not to start posting some stuff. I hope to update daily or at least a couple of times a week.

First up is a catchup of my latest sketchbook, so about two weeks worth of doodles, I usually work on 3-4 pages at a time sporadically

EDIT: changed te first pic for thumbnail, check next post for my REAL first post

ah the good ol' mole skin notebook :pirate:
I love those!

anyway, your work is really interesting but some of the figures seem a little scrunched. It maybe the head being a little too big for the body or the fact that the image is kind of small, which is meesing with me head :p

Keep posting, and Ill keep enjoying :pirate:

oy! thanks for posting on my sketchbook page ;)

@ Ellingsworth, Camara Thanks guys!
@ Chaotic Knight, Hummdrumm My first post was a sort of snapshot into where i got so far just to give you an idea, post from now on will deifnately be bigger. Also, Thanks!
@ Flipnastwebby I can definately see what your saying, especially on the first female ones. I used posemaniacs for a few and the foreshortening is off a lot on a couple.

Ok so my first update is a little small, but i'm going to do my best to keep it daily

Hey dude, not bad with that last ink drawing... My only problem is that the background leg, her right, it is a bit too long in the thigh and has made the lower leg appear misaligned... I do like the dynamic pose of the characters that you have been drawing...

Drawing daily is the name of the game... And to play well we gotta put our time into it to learn the rules enough to bend and break them willfully instead of unintentionally.

Anyway:
The work itself is really good. I like how you've already begun adding your own flair to typical character development. That's what truly sets an artist apart. His own style and flair :)
Keep working, I hope I'll stop letting RL take over me and be able to try and keep up with all you guys lol!

Great figure studys, I have a dout, what kind of line do you put down in the paper when life drawing figure. A direction line to catch the pose, the negative shapes? like outlines or so?, one lose line circuling around .. i cant figure it out. I have this problem, i always make a stupid ball for the head and i cant get my doodles fealing like so. They turn out so stricked T_T

Keep em coming !

As someone ahead of me said confidence is a strength of your work.

I like how you put down the values with your portrait thumbs, I think you should experiment more with that. You could get very good results working with only values if you dropped the sometimes really heavy linework.

Be a bit more subtle with your pencil lines or try a more controlled medium for linework, like ink or a simple ballpoint. Maybe do some only value, and some only linework pieces and then try to find the right ballance of the two.

My two cents, and thx for your words in my SB !

Thanks everyone!

@ Nistarn- human form is pretty much the most difficult thing to get right. As for my method, well its changed over time. Now i can just clums masses of scribbles together how i want the pose to look in my head, sort of like some people approach to sculpting. Before being able to simply lay down the shapes though I used to do things the Marvel way (great book) where i do a gestural line, start with the centre of mass (usually the pelvis of chest) and then move outwards.

The problem with starting with the head to early is that your figures can sort of look like they are hanging fomr the head and arent weighted right.

@ Addisso- thanks good points theyre, next time i try a set of protraits i will try and just lay down sets of value, at the moment when i do that i end up with a little bit of a smudged mess (darn lefty).

anyway i havent tried my hand at painting digitally or even touched my wacom for ages so heres my return. A WIP, crituqes would be a godsend!

Very nice work on the painting... you asked for a crit and it shall be...

I would like to recommend that you take the far hand and put it on the other end of the sword hilt, this will add to the sense that he has two hands... right now it seems like the hands converge to one form. By putting the hand on the other end it will also give him the look like he's trying to pry the sword from the creature's jaw, giving him a better grip to help him wiggle it out...

That's just my two cents man...

I saw your post in the FF section then came here. I'd like to see more of the snake. It could be a dinosaur for all I know because I can't see the rest of the body. The form of the snake is broken up and shouldn't be around his legs. Some nice shadows on the figure but they don't all do justice to the anatomy. Right arms, is very nice, arm in the background, nicht zu gut. Here is Elwell's tut on edges : Edges (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51913)

Sawa
September 1st, 2007, 04:40 PM
hey :D
as the crazy dude said, showing the second arm would make the figure look like having more grip on the sword. its more dynamic like that imo ;)
you should also add less details/highlights on the background etc, cuz it takes the viewers eye away from the actual point of attention. let the snake pop in the eye a bit more, just make it bigger or add brighter colors because, right now, it seems to disappear in the grass around it for me.

Heya Kyle, responding to your comment in my SB.

Couple crits. The first being, to loosen up on the figures a little. I mean, don't stop drawing them or reduce the amount of figure work, just make them less stiff. Just a little bit of loosening up...not much, just a little.

Also, for action poses, getting someone to model for them (or you model yourself for them, in a mirror or something) or get a picture for reference. That'll help make them look more convincing.

For digital, the big things to play with are Custom Brushes and Textures. Those help with things like grass, rock, rain, snow, glowing things, flowers, clouds, pixelation, woodgrain, moths, bats, etc.

One more thing. Are you drawing in those $10 moleskin notebook thingies? If so, IMHO, I would draw on bigger paper. Just some advice, you don't have to follow it if you don't want to.

Anways, I do like what you have here and will try to swing by often.
Keep drawing!

Nice work so far... Hogarth's books are a good resource to use, I've drawn half of the plates in 'Dynamic Anatomy' so far. (I'll be finishing up on it after I gourge down on Dr. Gordon's book...) If you are in the market for some freebies I got a good link in my sig...

I have a question though... How are you drawing, from your wrist or your elbow? I figure with the tiny book you might have problems with only using your wrist. I had the same problem when I re-took up drawing about a year back... used a small hardbound blank book... I thought I'd have carpeltunnel for sure. lol...

Real media studies are cool, it's sometimes fun to be rough with water colour. Keep it up!

The Crazy Dude SRD
December 25th, 2007, 05:25 PM
Not bad so far. I would recommend that you watch your shadows on the left-hand shoulder, the collar and shirt are turning out flat in comparison to the portrait. Also watch out on the eye on the left.

The water color looks alright, but the first thing that comes to mind with it is the type of paper your using? Higher weight papers are made to take watercolor well. I would also recommend that you try getting a hair drier or a heatgun and keep the paper more or less horrizontal to keep things from drippin too much.

Smarty
December 29th, 2007, 06:41 PM
WhiteVillage thanks, i know about the ear, i was kinda trying to rush myself along a bit on it and try this suggestive detail everyone goes on about :D looks like i left it a bit too much though, a couple more flicks might have sorted it?

CrazyDude Yer valid points about my failed attempt at getting it down with as few strokes as possible, maybe next time :( the drips was intentional though, i don't know why, i just love drippy ink studies, where i'm moving the water around the page before gravity gets a hold.

Beonarri
January 30th, 2008, 02:23 PM
That ink stuff is really killer!
Great job on both of those, the face and the psuedo-asian environment.

The monkey guy is cool, the greyscales work, but the color one doesn't work as well. I think the colors are a bit too saturated (something I'm prone to doing as well), I think a more subdued palette would work for him. Lots of "dead", desaturated colors, like what are found in nature, I mean, since he is a monkey. Although, for his fish-scale armor, the bright green can probably stay.

I'd also work on getting a consistent color for the main light source on the figure, i.e. if the light that hits his head is yellow, then the light that hits everything else is going to be yellow, then the color of the shadows would be purple-y. After you establish that you can pick a general reflected light color, start painting that in, then get the reflected light off of his clothing. The armor would reflect heavily given its material. So a bit of green would hit the some of the surfaces of his face.

Am I rambling? I'm probably rambling.
Anyways, nice updates!

Mat Kaminski
January 31st, 2008, 03:41 PM
I think I have to agree with Beo on this one.
The watercolors you have been working on have been much better than the previous work. I especially like the face above! Really great rendering.
As far as the monkey guy goes above, it might just be me, but the feel of the picture seems so flat.

But yet again, I go back to the watercolors! Those are nice man, really nice. :)

The Crazy Dude SRD
February 18th, 2008, 09:30 AM
Awesome work there dude. How was Amsterdam by the way... I'd like to check it out one of these days when I can afford it... And not just because 'it's' legal there... It's also where Van Gogh's museum is if I recall right, and also the architecture is something I'd like to mentally chew for a few months...

Now back to the works at hand. I definately like how you used the limited palette painting of the lovely lady there. I think you should try out this limited palette... Zorns Palette; A white, (Zinc or Titanium I can't recall), A red... Cerilian, Yellow Ochre, and Ultramarine or perusian blue. using the Ochre and the blue it blends into a black like tone that works well as a warmer black. This also gives you the three basic colors and white. I highly suggest that you check out Maxetormer's SB (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=71211) I seen some pretty wicked Self Portraits from him a while back using just the limited palette...

Smarty

heres another Self portrait, this time in good old 6B :D took around 2 hours or something... I've come to realize i always do my eyes too big in portraits from life, i think its because I find myself focusing there way to much :( Sorry for the crappy cell phone picture, its pretty big and nothing else came to hand.

Also i swear i have but loads to upload just its not scanned in yet, so don't think I've stopped sketching or anything!

MattLloyd: From life, and thanks:D
The Crazy Dude SRD: yer ill deifnately give that ago. I wentto the Van Gogh museum and found out that i hate Van Gogh, seems everything he did came out of failure of trying to do something else, It actually made me sad to think that he is the first person people think of when the word 'artist' comes up... The Rhiks museum was much better, finally got to see some Rembrandt's, a true master and nothing compares to the originals, they literally glow! The architecture reminds me a little of Edinburgh, but yes it was unique :D

heres a few from visual studies, again i need to figure out how to photograph these properly.

Whitevillage
February 28th, 2008, 04:05 AM
We're kinda in the same boat when it comes with 'too large anime kinda eyes'. It can be a habbit because eyes are just an important feature of the face that can show a lot of emotions and thus, we put to much into it that it grows big. Although, I don't worry too much of it with my own designs, but I can believe it isn't that good looking when you do SP's. Maybe draw simple head blocks with detailed yet proportioned eyes as a study?

That last still life drawing looks good though. :)

The Crazy Dude SRD
March 4th, 2008, 06:47 AM
Damn dude, way to go, you made my mouth water for Amsterdam. I'll have to migrate myself there now.

About Van Gogh though, I don't believe that everyone relates the word artist to him, most but not all... I at least heard da Vinci's name come up once in a while and Mikey's name about twice that I can recall.

However if you really think about it, all failures are in essence a success if you can learn how you made the wrong moves to use in your future endevors (this can include the wrong moves others have made before you). I've believe that Vincent always though of the movement of natural form and wanted to express the breath of life that he seen from it. Although technically abstract and to some degree horrid, he was more or less a dude obsessed with painting and drawing to the degree of madness. I also enjoy how he painted with semi-mixed paints that allowed for the core colors to sorta blend in your eyes rather than be highly polished. Rembrant though is a dude altogether on a much higher level and would definately be a first stop. I'd definately pull a few studies from him when I get the chance.

On your problem with the eyes on your self-portrait. I highly recommend doing a few sketches (little to no rendering) to try to triangulate the form of the eyes to other forms such as the placement of the nose/lips/ears/jaw. If it doesn't relate to the scale of the other forms and is either too small or large then it would be easier to correct as your still in the drawing stage and not in the full rendering stage. It could be as simple as a line misplaced that can augment a drawing.

Mat Kaminski
March 5th, 2008, 02:05 AM
I think I have to argue against everyone else on that portrait. I love the style. Very unique. The large eyes seem very personal in my opinion. This is just my opinion though... Are you going for ultra-realism? Or trying to develop your own style? I dunno... just curious.

Malaki: Hmm well the point of this self portrait was to see how far my ability had come since my last one realism wise, not that its something i want to follow (realism). Off course i want to develop my own style, but i want it to be one grounded in solid foundations. Ha this post sort of has some landscape, I've been loving the palette that Snow brings lately.

Crazy: ha my sketchook'y style stuff that i only spend five minutes on seems to be ok eyes wise :S The problem comes when i start to render them and feel i need more room to breath, which i don't! Yer i see some of your points with Van Gogh, But deep down i get the feeling he wanted to be a technically good painter but could never pull it off. He would copy other artists of the time all the time, but never quite pulled off any of their works!

Ballistics: Aww don't say that! just draw draw draw! Your right the competition for UWE is fierce but just crack on now so you feel confident when you walk into that interview :D

I've been digging up some WIP's from ages ago too see if any of them can be reworked into something substantial for my portfolio. I decided to revisit this one, People were right about the background being disappointing in the last version so I've started placing him somewhere more grand :D

Hey there, you stopped by my sketchbook... yesterday? And I thought I'd return the favor. I think you do a really good job with nailing that sense of mass; there's nothing flat about your figures. Sometimes the line weight and sharpness is a little jarring--in some, it works quite well, in others it seems inappropriate. All in all tho, you've really got your own style, and that's rad. Also, you're crazy prolific, man. How do you motivate yourself to draw so much?

Smarty

Rand: soon enough i shal have osme more paitnings to put on here :D
Maverick: Thanks! Line weight is always something I try to experiment with at least a little, just to try and understand edges mostly. I'm not quite their yet. Motivate myself to draw? I don't know, i guess i do a lot at college and the briefs they give us are usually pretty interesting so I like to dive in. Apart from that i don't even think i draw as much as i should. Maybe an hour a day outside of college projects? I think i heard Marko tell a new forum member a few years ago that he needs to start putting 5-6 hours in a day as a norm to get to the level we all want to achieve.

Anyway some updated snippets on the moleskine.

VIN: yer i know, its the eyes again! dam i just need to scale them down a little i hope, they always seem to be the focal point whether its relevant or not :(

Hi SmartKyle, thanks for dropping by my sb.
I think that the work from your school really motivate you well, and I love your project stuff in page2, sweet style. One thing I noticed is that you mentioned about what Marko said the time one should spend on drawing per day. That really gives me an idea that how lazy I am on keeping myself drawing:^^;:. Thanks for this useful information.

Keep it up:D!!

I love your sketches. The style reminds me a lot of Image, the comicbook publisher.

If you haven't heard of them, or haven't been inspired by them, check out some of their stuff. It's interesting, how your work has the same sketchy/flexible style as a lot of their stuff :]

Shit dude, you draw so much. Frequency is one of my main problems. I need one of those little books, or something.

You're certainly improving. I love some of your latest stuff. The skin folds on the chair-guy about half way up the page are amazing. No critique from me at the moment. Keep it up bro.

@ Grimble : Hey thanks thats a very nice compliment, im not too into the comic book scene more fans of the separate artists themselves. But i checked them out and its very good stuff :D

@ Some_guy : Thanks, I intend too... I really don't draw nearly enough!

Some more life drawing i don't think you guys have seen.

I think I'm done on this oil for now, i seem to completely rework nearly everything every time i go near it!

Wow man, you have really improved, digital and you pencil work. Those sketches you in you sketchbook(#78 ) are cool rendered.

Looking forward to more.

You're doing great, everything looks good.
The only crit I can offer right now is, on your sketchs, they look a little messy, from I guess your hand while your drawing, it smudges the graphite. I had this same problem, I used to think there was no way around it. But if you take a small peice of tracing paper and put it under your hand while your drawing it will prevent you from accidently smudging the drawing.
Thats really all I can think of for now, Keep up the good work!

Thanks for leaving a note on my SB!

Do more gesture drawings, from photo references or life drawing sessions. They will help you refine your drawing skills a bit more. Try also to study light and shading so then your drawings get a bit of more depth.

The shark on post 41 looks awesome. Nice sketchbook!

@ Lyno : Thanks :D
@ Original E : I know my drawings often become smudged and dirty. I tend to start in the top left hand side of my sketchbook and cause I'm left handed by the time I've finished a double page my hand has gone over the whole thing. Ill try the tracing paper thing, or maybe i can break the habit and do my first doodles in the bottom right?
@ Luness : Thanks, I'm working on it, 95% of my work seems to be just that. I think I'm turning into a figurative artist! Maybe I need to break out my box.

Heres some better photos of paintings now i borrowed a nice camera.

Looking at your sketchbook does remind me that I should use my moleskine for drawing instead of writing down what books I want to read.

I actually prefer the portrait in the earlier pictures, in the final one it looks like you maybe over-blended everything (something I do all the time, hyprocrite I am). Still very nice though :)

@Shantih: I <3 my moleskines and yes, overworking is a constant problem I'm working on :(

Here is my influence project that UWE set.

@ Markey2D; its an ink drawing took into photo shop with lots of tweaks.

here is the OK'd design for a local restaurant mural commission, now i just need to figure out how to get this thing on the actual wall. the design i confess is a little too pepper project for sure, but it was the direction they kept pushing me towards i guess.

Looks like it'd be suited being printed and transferred onto the wall, rather than painted. Too bad you're up north, that's the sort of stuff my stepdad does at work (looks like some of his prattling about what he does for a living slunk into my brain ;)).

Hey man, great stuff here. I really like your stuff. one thing I might try and work on though is pushing your values. Alot of your work seems a bit flat, especially some of your colored work. Give your pieces a few darker tones and some brighter highlights to give them more depth and your work will really pop!

The second set of pages is a good run! For sure. The first set is kinda jumbled, but you did say that it was a quick session.
I'd say four pages is a decent amount for one day. You agree?

Keep coming :)

Ok first update in a long while , just odd socks, bit and bobs. TBH for now I'm going to be updating my blog more than here. Its probably easier for the rest of my pier group to see there. Thanks to fran for letting me use her scanner.

Hey, the last set of sketches you posted looks really good, you can see some clear improvement from your first posts. I especially like the guy standing with his arms folded, cool perspective and nice sense of movement in the picture. Too bad you won't be posting here so frequently anymore, would have loved to see more of your work.
