Did not realize the deadline was this Sunday. I started this a few hours ago, so I guess it's gone be my final for now.
Had some fun though doing it though.
This dude is gone spin the globe like thirty-two times.

i thought you said the final pole wouldn't be up until after 2pm on monday gmt? you seem to be slightly early.
August 13th, 2007, 08:04 AM
voted Joe simply cuz it looks artistic and funny.
August 13th, 2007, 08:22 AM
gep: Yours I like best from a techincal point. Very well done, you know your anatomy and man, that is a lot of junk on his back!
ikuru: That is probably the best drawing of yours I've seen! Keep it up!
fedezz: Cute, solid, but of course not a whole lot there. Pig is underdeveloped a little. Still a pretty piece, of course!
propishus: The guy's mouth looks a little flat. Nice detail in his equipment!
Simonstahlenhag: That's crazy over the top! Pretty cool piece, but a little gross. What's with the guy sticking his hand in the other guy's mouth?
Mr Joe: Your piece is the one I'd most like to see up on a wall. Very simple, but it just works! I give you my vote!
Migsta: Hehe, nice character. Of course there is no sense of the weight the stuff on his back would have to weigh. It's a little - slapped on.
August 13th, 2007, 08:33 AM
Thanx Dragon. I really appreciate that.
Too bad I did not have the time to render, well Im gone do it still and post it later on.
August 13th, 2007, 08:56 AM
This my final unfinished piece, got carried away here and turned it into an illustration instead of concept. The reason why it lokks the way it does.. hahahaha
And I know i probably shouldnt put this here, but well i decided that if i dont, ill only feel like i cheated myself and i wasted my weekend, so if its in the wrong place, my oppologies.
ps. Good luck everyone.
August 13th, 2007, 09:06 AM
voted for my favorite 3.
yo dragon4lunch im guessing my backpack looks slapped on as well?
August 13th, 2007, 09:18 AM
voted for fedezz for the combination of great excecution and mondo wierdness.
August 13th, 2007, 10:28 AM
voted for feddie!
so odd i love it :)
great execution and i also like the subtle approach to overprepared - i think sometimes subtle is the best humour
August 13th, 2007, 10:38 AM
FEDEZZ: I think this one delivers both beauty and humour, wich is very hard to do, you know, there's something with beautiful technique that just isn't funny. But you nailed them both, I think. Got my vote.
DIMAGYAN Your piece almost got my vote. I'm a big fan of your style, it's so damn slick, I love it!! Perfect for this topic. This piece is not very funny though.
llothcat: This one I like. A little rushed maybe. But the guy is great. Makes me laugh. He lookes like the fourth lone gunman...
Mr-Joe: This one's very good. Almost got my vote. Great style. Facial expression is the key!!!
GEP: Nice one, there's definitely some kinship here. Gotta be the elephant.
NICE WORK EVERYONE! Great topic btw.
August 13th, 2007, 11:01 AM
not in time, and not nearly finished either. ah well, this is how my entry almost went.
August 13th, 2007, 11:07 AM
Jasonclarke its a pity you never got this on time, you would have at had at least 1 vote here, on the simple fact its probably the most original idea out of the lot. Everyone automaticly decided to draw human characters, including myself. I never even considered animals, lol. great idea
August 13th, 2007, 01:37 PM
voted for Mr Joe - it amused me the most. I want a plaid shirt of the apocalypse.
second favs were ikuru and propishus.
grenogs I hope you manage to finish it as a portfolio piece, its looking pretty nice so far!
August 13th, 2007, 04:51 PM
hey Simonstalenhag thanks for your comments. yes, i'm not a very funny person.i try to do a "real" aproach to this entry but given something exagereted...but humor is not an easy task for me.thanks for your kind words.
i make some comments later
voted, and some comments
llothcat:i like how you do the figure.the transparent frame don¡t help too much to the composition(cut the feet).i would like to see some more colours in the things he carries in his backpack.
Migsta:good drawing and nice paranoic expression.i think the background colour don't work well(but i guess is a personal taste)
Mr-Joe:nice aproach and final result.
Lazy:nice paint.what is the cilynder he has in the left?
ACRO:a diferent aproach.a paranoic cooker. i think you put too much black and withe (even in the background) and it's quite dificult made that work well.
Simonstalenhag:that is an insane face and expression! really bizarre.the only thing (for me at least) that i don't like too much is the amount of things in the backpack, but i guess is part of the fun of the image(is like a town in his back)
DaveClarke:nice work, but i don't see him as a backpacker(i think is too fantasy)
propishus:really great work, i like a lot your style and the way you do colour.
ikuru:i wish you could have the time to finished, because is a very good drawing.
fedezz:muy buen trabajo, realmente lo del cerdo fue algo sorpresivo(por cierto el cerdo esta espectacular) humor y acabado fino.
gep:very good and the things in his back are very funny.i don't like too much the chop you did in the top of the image(i would prefer to see all the backpack)
grenogs:too bad you can't finished.the painting is good. i think the composition i too symetrical
JasonClarke:very good. the mouse is great, you have to finish that image
August 13th, 2007, 10:39 PM
my vote went to lazy and simon, simply because the character created made me laugh!
but if only one vote is allowed, i would hav gone for lazy's irony.
was hoping to see some entry that focus more on the humour side of the concept "overprepared", a bikini clad, travel light backpacker can be "overprepared" if she suddenly find herself in the middle of a nudist camp...
technically, all entries have pass bumskee's scrutiny so no comments there (in fact learning a lot!)
August 14th, 2007, 01:25 AM
My vote went to Dimagyan. I couldn’t go past the style… and the little bird on top!
dragon4lunch: Thanks, yeah I tried to shove as much random stuff in as I could.
Simonstalenhag: Yeah what self respecting, over-prepared backpacker wouldn’t pack a spare elephant? Nice work mate, I liked how u really took the excess to the limit! There was no way anyone was going to have a more in their backpack then yours!
The only thing that through me off with yours though was the main characters face. It seems like his face is on a different angle to his head. Would of got my vote otherwise, nice work!
JasonClarke: Nice work and style!
Dimagyan: Thanks, yeah I was probably a bit slack in chopping off the top. I was running out of time and thought the top needed more ropes so I thought I would chop it off so it looks like the backpack is so big it goes off screen out of shot. (Probably didn’t get this effect though!)
Grenogs: Awesome work, would be great to see it finished!
Great work everyone.
August 14th, 2007, 07:12 AM
GEP: yeah the face looks a little odd I agree. I thinks it's the hair. I was trying to give him an insane haircut that kind of ran down his forehad, but it probably only gave his head a front tilt. And sure you could have more in you backpack than this guy, Mr-Joes guy have two bottomless bags. My backpack only extends down to the lake in the background.
IKURU: Jag glömde säga att din var skitbra! Too bad you didn't get more time with it.
August 14th, 2007, 07:19 AM
Alice, Dimagyan, Gep Thanks for your comments, very much appretiated. Hopefully i will get to finish it, though since the deadline has passed, my enfusiasm has faded a little. But if i do finish it, i guess ill try and find somewhere here to post it. Dimagyan when you say its to symetrical, can you explain more please. I'd realy much appretiate it.
August 14th, 2007, 08:13 AM
yo jason clarke very cool mouse
but isnt the CHOW suppose to be human-like?
August 14th, 2007, 08:30 AM
Hey ACRO, as I remeber the guidelines are something like this:
COW - Creature: Species, not unique.
CHOW - Character: Unique in appearance, behaviour etc.
I don't think CHOW is restricted to humans only, the Death's Horse thread is a good example.
August 14th, 2007, 08:36 AM
never thought i could do animals for a chow
but i guess his mouse has the behavior...
thanks for the feedback graphuji
atleast someone around here could answer my questions
thanks for the only feedback i got dimagyan

Voted for Lazy, Jason Clarke, and Fedezz,
I don't have time to write up a critique for everyone, but I have some replies and a few comments and critiques.
ikuru- Thanks mate, I think yours looks very good as a sketch, The anatomy on the thumbs up left hand looks funky, I've lurked in the community threads now and the and I've seen you actively participating in the character of the week, and I can honestly say this sketch shows a vast improvement since some of your work from a few months ago. Another thing, I'm not sure what this means: "This dude is gone spin the globe like thirty-two times." But from what I read from it, hes going on a tour of the world with all his gear skating around, and it actually doesn't seem like he's too overly prepared, Besides that unknown object he has strapped to his stomach, kinda looks like it could be a parachute, it looks like he doesn't have all that much unnecessary over prepared gear, looks like an unrolled up sleeping bag, a back pack that could be stuffed up with food and world touring supplies, maybe a rolled up tent, anyways its a pretty good concept even better drawing.
dragon4lunch- Thanks dragon!
Simonstalenhag- Thanks simon, "Facial expression is the key!!! " Does this mean that you liked the blank : O facial expression or it could use more facial expression? I liked yours, You have lots of detail in it, I like sonic hanging out in that pile of great wall china gear, is it done in colored pencil? Only thing that bugs me is that characters face, It kinda scares me, and his pose/ position, looks like hes sitting down to take a crap and not overwhelmed with gear, I think it might have worked better if he was almost buried under the pile of stuff. Good detail though, good drawing/painting.
JasonClarke- I like it a lot, my favorite one, I like the character a lot, his expression reads like hes actually reading a map and looking where he should go. Even though hes a mouse and could not possible carry all that gear and hes not crushed by it either, it still looks believable, good cartoon style to it.
alice_ - Thanks alice, I'm glad It amused you.
DIMAGYAN- Thank you!
Lazy- I like it , great concept, I think its the best concept for "Over Prepared"
Fedezz- Funny concept, You did a nice painting, I like your traditional looking style.
ACRO- I think the drawing it self could use a little more work, I know its a cartoon but it just doesn't seem very believable as a character concept, and illustration, Most of the objects seem to be very flat and there does not seem to be any consistent light sources, I see that there is an obvious light coming from above, but all the objects under the light do not seem to be shaded believably, the light source also looks very dramatic, seems like there should be more shadows.
I'm not really sure whats the concept, It reads to me as a Chef with a pizza with some Basketball shoes, a Michael Jackson Glove, with a ton of gear for cooking that doesn't really look attached to him, ready to go camping and cook some stuff, but then hes holding a cooked pizza, so I wonder, is he delivering a pizza? His posture looks funny, doesn't really look like hes trying to carry the weight of all that stuff on his back, but looks like hes trying to do a cool pose while theres some gear floating behind him. Theres some real good things about your piece, All the individual elements are done very nicely, they are very well rendered, but they all seem to be more like individual elements all put together in one image. Over all its a pretty good looking cartoon character.
Sorry I didn't critique everyone.

thanx for the crit Joe interesting stuff.
well having been out traveling here and there myself a couple of times I know what to bring and seriously this guy Is waaaay over packed, I mean common hes bags are touching the ground. and he has a skimask on he's head.
Also the thing on the front is actually another bag (I have that bag in real life) Its a 17 inch laptop Crumpler bag, (Im sure its gone show better once I render this sucker). Crumpler makes the best Laptop bags in the world actually. Anyhow its quite common to see backpackers carrying a so called "daypack" on their belly like he does.
You might be right about that thumb too.
Ill check in on it.
Thanx for the crit bro!
August 14th, 2007, 12:12 PM
JOE: It means I love it.
It's pencil on paper, colored in Painter.
Ok, so he scares you and he looks like he's taking a crap? I can't really describe how I wanted him to look when I first drew him but I think that your words come pretty close. But I understand where you're going, point taken.
August 14th, 2007, 01:54 PM
ACRO, dragon4lunch, alice_, and DIMAGYAN: Thank you for the comments.
August 14th, 2007, 03:42 PM
thanks to Grenogs, Gep, Dimagyan and Mr Joe for the positive feed back. i am going to finish it, i wish could have got it done in time. actually, the whole i dea of the mouse was my girlfriend's. i mentioned the CHOW thing, and that the next one was a backpacker. she said, 'Draw a mouse'! i must admit, like you guys, i never would have thought of it. haha
and as to your concerns, Acro, i agree with Graphuji, but, i thought about that as i was drawing it. i guess i had made it more about the mouse's design, and less about his character, it would have been inappropriate, but, i thought it would be ok to shake it up a little.
next time, i'll try to be more punctual!
August 14th, 2007, 04:35 PM
haha thanks gep, and you notice the bird! , i wasn't sure about the size of the bird when i did. thanks
grenogs: sorry, i explain better (i simplify due to my bad english). when i said too symetrical i mean about the position of the character in the space and the green zones in both sides of the image, i think a more balanced not centered composition could help to make the shot more random and casual.
August 15th, 2007, 03:57 AM
i went for simon's cause it was waaaaaaaay over the top. close second would be gep's...the elephant did it for me:D
no real crits for anyone else's though. we've got a nice variety of styles for once, and that makes me mighty proud.
August 15th, 2007, 07:45 AM
dimagyan Thanks for your comment, very much appretiated.
I see what you mean, and if the final background was to stay like that, i would have to agrea with you. But the unfinished looking areas are as they look(unfinished)the whole surounding area is basicly underpainting, and all the green foliage in the foreground would blend into the distance(blue sky area). Also I do plan to put a few birds and stuff into image, that should also make the whole area more random, and less chance for the eyes to settle in one specific area for to long.
August 20th, 2007, 08:10 AM
Hourray... new winner here.
fedezz - give us a topic, brother ;)
