I'm looking for an artist (or several) to develop the artwork for "Imperium - Rise of Rome".

Description

"Imperium - Rise of Rome" is a turn-based strategy game simulating the rise of the Roman Empire. The players play Kings, Emperors, or a Senatorial faction in Rome, and tries to lead his empire to the world domination. The game is a one-man development effort that has lasted now for several years; the project is expected to be completed during 2008.

Project website: http://www.fenrir.dk

For those with the patience to dig through the forums and the blog, there is a some information on the original ideas in the game (though a lot of it is out of date), as well as the current scope of the game. Otherwise, the Description under "Imperium" summarizes the basics of the game.

Task

Most of the artwork will need to be themed around Rome and Hellenic Greece; i.e., marbles, people in togas, war units. Players of these kind of games tend to value historical correctness, so some care will be needed to ensure that artwork remains faithful to the period.

The art work required in the game can be split into three parts (all 2D):

1. Portrait Artwork

Gameplay in Imperium is centered on characters (both historical and randomly generated). Each character is identified in-game with a portrait; these portraits are generated from "face parts" (face shapes, eyes, noses, mouths, hair) to (theoretically) generate hundreds of unique portraits.

An example of such a system can be seen in the Paradox game "Crusader Kings" (http://www.paradoxplaza.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=52&Itemid=140).

2. Game Interface

The game contains approximately 20 windows (give or take a few, depending on user-friendliness testing), which needs artwork to be developed for backgrounds, buttons, icons, etc.

For the game interface, the game art of Ageod (e.g., Birth of America (http://www.birth-of-america.com/english/index.html)) is interesting for comparison as Imperium has a very similar "graphical engine".

3. Game Map

The game is played out over a huge map of Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia (to India). The game map needs to be drawn (or captured), and a system of sprites for the map developed that allows the relevant game information to be presented clearly and conscisely.

Compensation

Compensation on the project will be royalty based (thus its placement under "non-paying jobs". Although the aim of this project is to develop a commercially viable game, game development remains a hobby for me (I develop non-game software professionally).

I am personally convinced that the game will be published when it is completed (as I have developed a number of useful contacts over the years - and there are a number of dedicated niche publishers in this genre), but obviously there are no guarantees. It's also worth noting that there is hardly a huge market for historical, turn-based strategy games, so even if the game is published and is successful, the returns will likely be modest.

An interest in the type of game or historical period would obviously be an advantage. I would certainly be interested in finding a partner with a similar interest in turn-based strategy games and/or history.
