A new painting of Gandalf, I finally "have" a scanner so more will most likely come soon. I have an Ent that will most likely be done by the end of the day too.

throtailer : Thanks for the comments, the fog effect is due to laziness/not really knowing what to put there, as I said more detailed things to come.

I like the dimensionality of the Gandalf drawing and the top two paintings.
The Ent drawing gives the feel of a watercolor painting with ink over it.
Keep at it.

your linework is really nice! i'm not sure if you're just starting out or not, but if you're looking for improvement, you could start by adding some texture and depth to the gandalf piece; it's certainly good but think it needs a bit more work 'cus it's a bit flat :P adding something in front of him might make it more interesting as well.
good work so far tho!

You are doing a good job with creating atmospheric depth,
something that I have to work at.
Working from reference is not cheating.
Neither is using bits and pieces of copyright free imagery.
Just be sure to actually paint them after you have them in place.

SOME UPDOOTS!
Peppers and Snakes for my drawing class at skewelz. I did/do quite enjoy the snake ones that I did one from memory, which is the last one of the snakes you shall see. The bottom drawings are crimes against humanity, IMO, but thats the whole point. Drawing 1 is A common American man walking in his suit jacket and tie with no pants on flipping his wife off, looking strangely like Marylin Manson with his new Asian Balloon girlfriend. The bottom-most drawing is of Lursay Sampson, a close relative to Burt Sampson and Hummer Sampson as well as Merj Sampson.

Hails all. I just did some paintings from reference, got the idea from a perspective thread here, I was just trying to get the overall feel of the painting and not any of the smaller details, also trying to train my eye better to see color for what it really is rather than what my brain thinks it is

Hey, really good start! I think there's an inherently good potential in the linework shown on your post for September 10. The new anatomy studies are coming along well but remember the goal isn't to master Bridgman's line style but moreso his technique and fluidity in forming the studies. Focus more on the forms as three dimensional masses, and less on recreating the exact same style you see in his work!
Keep drawing! Good stuff going on in here.

It is less hairy, more fit (for running and what have you) the mountain on its back has formed a crater type thing, which it splashes color in to attract mates as well as newly formed rocky horns with long colorful hair also for finding a mate.

Sweet work! I especially like your life drawings. Your COW creature looks really good so far, interesting to make it a mountain.
For your birds for a bird god picture, the values look really muddled to me. The shadows on the side and the hood look way to close to the background, I think you should make one of them darker. Also, the abs look unnatural packed that way (at least to me, but looking at some pictures they look like that, in others they don't), and the side looks to wide. I like the arms and the details are coming out well, though :)
Great sketchbook overall, can't wait to see more!

Bridgmans = win. Good figurework, copying Bridgman's creates so much improvement so fast and I can see that in your work. I actually drew some of those same figures and they are in my sketchbook if you want to check them out. Your line quality is great in your figures. When it comes to realism in painting, you should try not to blend with white. What white ends up doing is it desaturates your colors and actually does the opposite of creating a convincing sense of light. What you want to do is study how light in different conditions (indoor, outdoor, cloudy, sunny, time of day) effects figures. Also, pretty much the same deal, use black sparingly when it comes to shadows. Of course, if you are going for a more stylized look than the above doesn't always apply. What really helps is to go to youtube and type in digital painting or look for videos by this guy Bobby Chiu. If you just sit and study how he works you will learn an enormous amount in a short period of time. Again, nice figures, good concepts look forward to seeing more.

deerinheadlights Thanks for the comments, I'm still trying to work a lot with lighting and such.
IVIATT Thank you for the critiques, tis why I started this sketchbook, so I could receive some critiques and criticisms about mah stuff, I'll be doing some light studies soon definitely. I've gotten a big urge to do a lot of painting, so I'll probably be doing such. I've actually watched some Bobby Chiu videos, and the dude is insane with how he shades, I've tried doing it in his style, but usually it goes downhill fast, but gotta keep going and practicing!

You should incorporate one of those neato life drawings into a composition, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
You really did a good job with those, and it could potentially make a really strong painting.

Wo really nice Updates Wolfentir.
What I am totally happy and pleased about is that you are willing to try other styles. The fairy book style works, but it is so much more interesting when you don't use it all the time. The Sithlord is a nice imagem, but there are some things that bug me big time:
-The boots really need more work. Very flat atm and they aren't decribing the foot at all.
-Texture on cape doesn't work. Its needs to be made into a 3d pattern. It might have worked in the fairy tale style, but not like this.
-Arms are very short.
-Face is VERY nice and interesting
-Generally I think you could have invested more time in the design process. What is special about her? I really see a Sithlord atm.
-Also in the cropped image, the floating stance doesn't work.
The pencil and charcoal work is nice, more values in the pencils perhaps.
Thoughts about charcoal pic.
-Clouds, Zepelin and characters very nice, maybe more details on characters, but not too much
-Background doesn't work. The black mountain and the many lines in the sea do not describe the elements well I think.
-A shadow of the Zeppelin on the grass would have been nice
Okay, sry for rambling. Keep updating regularly!

.s. - Thanks for the comments.
Diverse - Thank you, I like how it turned out.
AlexTooth - I'm workin on them pencils as we speak haha, trying to do what you said with shading in the muscle direction, I like how that looks, and it makes the muscles look a lot more real and 3D.
Fjooner - Thank you, I gotta do some more Bridgeman, although I'm working on some Bammes right now, hes quite handy.
Janos - Thank you for the detailed crits. I did notice towards the end that the Sith Lady's arms were a bit short :(. I agree with the cropping too :/ I just need to learn how to paint forests better, or create forest scenes, as I tend to do a lot of forest stuff. Thank you for the crits though :D

Dude, dude, DUDE! Thanks for introducing me to Arthur Rackham!! He rocks my bells! Awesome!
Those Rackham inspired CHOWs are very strong works. Why the halftones patterns on your sith girl? It's not a pop image so it doesn't serve a purpose and disrupts the style. Halftone would work as part of some graphic design elements over the whole piece to transform it once painted.
Keep on rocking though!
Wolfentir
March 14th, 2009, 02:55 AM
Eon - Arthur Rackham is friggin awesome, I'm glad I introduced you to him and his awesome style. Its surprising how many people, it seems, haven't heard of him. The halftone on the sith girl was a very poor texturing job, trying to make it look like wool.

Frank Frazetta is very helpful with exaggerated women's anatomy. Trying to turn the one on the horse into a painting but its not coming along very well :|.

Hey everyone, I haven't posted here in a while, damn. I've been doing some stuff experimenting with a new style, it isnt really like conceptarty, but I like it and maybe some of you will too!
So I start you out with a character from an old animation, revamped, for I intend to bring the animation back and make it into a series of sorts, or at least use the characters for animations in the future. the series is called Honor and Glory

Heres a silly self portrait I did of myself, of what I've essentially looked like the whole summer. Boba Fett sweatshirt FTW

sum office fan-art, sent it to Rainn Wilson via twitter, not sure if he looked at it or not, im guessing not
714745
Doctor Who fanart :D
714746
Some cyclops characters that will be in the honor and glory series, with an obvious Flapjack influence :P best show on TV right now.

Wowowowowow! Those are hot digital landscapes you've got there. I wish I could improve as fast as you do.
I like your cartoony flat colors also and it's good to see you doing so many studies. Keep pushing the contrast and color variety on your skin tones. Also those exaggerated females came out very exaggerated indeed. I think the muscles work but the heads might be a bit too small and take away from the attractiveness.
Your life drawings look great great great! Have you tried working with ink wash and chalk pastels? They can lay down shading quicker and let you hammer in more mass.
Keep it up, your doing fantastic.
