Hey everyone my name is Arnaldo Jose Rivera, I'm 17 years old and I come from Puerto Rico. I been wanting to do a sketchbook for quite a long time, but never had the courage to do so until now which I sometimes I feel it is a mistake, but it is better late than never, right?

Most of my sketches are done with ballpoint, there are very few done with pencils or other media, but you'll see them around hehe. Im here with the purpose of improving my actual drawing skills by listening to the poeple of this forums, that have great knowledge unlike me, Im looking foward to see comments and crits, or whatever you feel to say about my work, wheter is a helpful crit, or tips for getting a better scan outcome('cause my scanner sux)... I don't know whatever you feel to say, say it. I don't know much about digital art, in fact I have very few digital pieces...most of them are done with a program that my tablet(now broken)brought...I think it is called Corel Painter Essentials 2...I guess it is a simplified version of the widely famous Corel Painter(duh). The few times I used it, all I did was improvised since I didn't know much how to create certain effect and stuff digitally...and I really enjoy more when I work on paper or other traditional media. Well, I don't really have much more to say, the words will come as I get the comments with crits, question...or whatever you feel to say hehe...I hope you enjoy my humble sketchbook.

Good job, your conceptions are very unique and imaginative, and your skill level is not only high for a 17 year old, but also your discipline and your aesthetic judgment, with the former reflected in your bringing work to a satisfying finish, and the latter your selective use of detail. Most young artists use too little detail, or too much.
The only crits I have are with what look to be life studies, the shading on the hands are not completely successful in conveying the form, and with some of the eyes you want to avoid rendering individual lashes, start first with the mass, then tickle the edges with a few stray lines to suggest the character of individual lashes. Alternatively, many artists will omit the lashes entirely, depending on the scale of the head being rendered.
Post more soon, I really enjoy your work!
O Hell, forget what I said about the lashes, a second look after posting revealed to me your rendering of the lashes shows a very sensitive understanding of how they act in space, of their form and the perspective containing them.

ah, glad you started a sketchbook, really liked your yellow bloodsucker entry. Your creature designs are fantastic, as well as those facial feature studies. Nothing to crit right now, I want to see more! Teen artists FTW!!!!!!

Arn J.
August 5th, 2007, 09:37 PM
Cory Hinman- Thanks alot for the crits, I agree on what you say about young artist! I used to think a while back that making everything extra detailed was the important thing, now I learned it's not. I agree that the life drawings(hands, right?)don't have very conveing form, that is something I have to do more often...life drawing, that's like a great learn of learning about...everything hehe...I'll try to do more! Thanks for passing by and for the kind words!

Goog- Hey, thanks for the kind words! Gald you liked everything and I'll try to update very often! hehe teen artists rock! xD

You just attach a small thumbnail in your first post, the one you use will work I just think it has to be another format. Like .jpg for example.

Gorromog- Thanks for the comment, I try to do my creatures mostly from improvisation on this days, there was a time where I putted more thought on them...but on this days I'm thinking too much in other things, so I improvise. Thanks! Nice creatures from you too! xD

InvertedChalupa- Thanks, I try my best to improve myself, and I know doing a sketchbook on this site will be helpful! Cheers!

Cool stuff man! If I can offer a crit I'd say do more of those thumbnail gestures. Crank out a couple pages of maybe 100-200 of 30 sec poses and you'll be amazed at the progress. A good site for that is: http://www.posemaniacs.com/blog/ Best of luck, -francis

Dabaers- Thanks man! gald you liked my sketchbook. I do very few digital art..and it will keep decreasing to 0, cause my tablet is broken atm, but once I get a new one I'll kick photoshop abit! haha

Guilemo- Thanks fellow young artist! Glad you want to keep in touch with my sketchbook! Keep drawing mate! Im not big deal xD

gatling- Thanks man! I love your work aswell, keep drawing mate, and posting those jewels you do!

thirdeye- Thanks alot dude! Glad you liked!

Fvallejo- Thanks man! and thanks for the crit aswell...thanks for giving me that link it will be very useful for me! I hate the fact that everything is in chinese and I can't read. xD

The Whistler- Thanks! glad you like my crazy ideas hahaha xD

longshao- Thanks! it is somekind of Yeti hahaha.

---

Well I followed Fvallejo's crit or at least part of it and started doing 30sec poses, I did some then mom interrupted haha and I stopped, but I'll keep doing them. I have to get use to do them that fast, it's pretty hard for me because it is the first time I do it(the other poses were from imagination), and if you noticed sometimes I can't even finish some of them, but Im sure that if I do a few more I will do at least more concrete poses that are actually finished! That will be with some time. I see alot of people here doing 30 sec poses, and Im very impressed right now that they can do that in 30sec...cause now I have the experience of it and I thought it was abit easier haha. xD And sorry the scanner messed up quite alot on this scan, I don't know whats going on. I'll update with more poses later and some more imaginative stuff if I get inspired haha.

I really like your the creatures from your imagination, You have a nice fluid flow to your line work that creates a nice rhythm to your work, Your digital work is improving also, I've noticed on a few of your grounded drawings, its seems like they would fall over, remember to imagine a plum line from the central axis of your concepts with legs, (unless your concept isn't simply standing still) to make the weight is well supported so it will look believable.

Hello mate, fun to see draw from life (or photos or whatever it is). It's really good practice, which I'm sure you've heard many times now.
We've done it many times here at uni and I often felt frustrated with the very limited time we had for each drawing/pose. But it made you focus and stop messing around with details and see it as a whole.

Keep doing it and you will grow more confident as you go, it's an awsome feeling. :)

For the other sketches, I already saw most of 'em but I must say it again, you rock my socks off! Continue to do this amazing work and maybe it will leads you somewhere someday! Who knows?
