Here is the finished, (for now) Mike Yamada color piece. This was in the WIP section, there are 5 more still over there in progress.

This is Mike's original sketch for the forest in our Skillful Huntsman book.

Here is my first few minutes of laying down some color on his sketch.

This looks just wierd!
Can't help, but I love the color sketch even more than the final image.

Excellent!

I gotta say, this is some awesome stuff! Reminds me of one of my favorite sci-fi books, "Midworld" by Allen Dean Foster. Or "Etidorpha," a turn-of-the-century fantasy novel (I guess I should say two centuries ago), now that was some novel! Great work, I hope you guys expand on these ideas --- Soli

Really beautiful- and fun! Looks like a dry land coral reef. It was great to see all the SK work at Super Thursday- it's gonna be one sweet book!

Scott, this is really cool work. It seems like it should be on the cover of "Weird Tales of Science" or "Amazing Fantasy"...some kind of 50's pulp magazine with that title. This is really great, thanks for posting. I can smell the fungus in the air! :D

It's nice to see the initial sketch, and then the colored version.

This project inspired me so much. Thanks:cool:

That's an interesting enviroment. Fun to explore with the eye.

I think the value on the large green tentacles in the background collides with the value of the red background. Looks a bit smudgy since only the hue separates them. The color sketch has more value differance there. Adding an edge/rim light of some sort or changing any of the values would perhaps define that area better.

Thanks everyone.

Feng,
You already know to many of them!

Prometheus|ANJ,
Yeah I can see that. I was trying to keep the focus on the silhouttes in the lower left and the plants on the right, maybe I pushed the thing on the left to far? Thanks for the comments.

what a collaboration! kudos to both of you guys, really turned out nice. i'm also more fond of the first color sketch- more texture i guess; that protruding linework gives the lower half a great gritty nice textured look. detailed shot could stand for itself too. dunno, something just bugs me about the upper half of the finished piece... not up to par with the rest of it i guess

cheers

I really dig your work Scott and I hate saying this but I like Yamada's drawing more. Your first piece of the paint over did more for the character of his drawing than going further. I am trying to understand your choice of things like changing the way the branches or spores are hanging out of the tubes, it loses the dynamics. Now I will say that the last version that is cropped looks really good and stands on its own

I am not a master painter by any means but Just my opinion.

Really nice piece. I like the relaxed way of working. This may sound strange, but I seem to like the first color layout the best. Can't put my finger on it.

Yet the close-up of the guy, in the last image, shows some real talent.

Great work.

Thanx for the process study.. the whole thing turned out really great!

I only have one problem... the focal point of the pic is the bottom right where all the detail lies but the composition of all the plant/wormlife leads my eyes everywhere but that area... my suggestion is to brighten up and detail the middleground so the focal point isn't so small...
