The members here bring about such a motivational backdrop to the whole community and i hope i can contribute too!
Not easy to keep the sketchbook constantly running , but i'll definately try to keep up ,
I have some kinda disorder for only showing the better stuff and not the messy random stuffs that i keep ,hopefully shedding away this conscious behavior in the habit of keeping a sketchbook.

This is an excellent start to a sketchbook, it looks like you've got a firm grasp on anatomy and I think you'll do quite well here. Make sure to soak up some of the local art, we've got bonified professionals roaming these forums, they're always a good place for insparation.
Elwell and Mentler are probably the heaviest posters around here and they have some cool stuff. Though I don't know if those two in particular are professionals, I'd presume so.
Oh and make sure to put a link to your sketchbook in your sig, I see you don't have it their yet. It's a great way to get input.

Awesome. Those last two are great, the robotic chick and the lizard thing are really cool. The Asian chick(your ex?) looks cross-eyed, though...is she? No disrespect meant, just curious. If she's not, it needs fixed, but I'm sure you've already seen it. Anyhow, great SB, you've got skills.

Can I ask you how you get your highlights? On my paintings, it seems that no matter how high up I go, it always isn't the sheen that it seems on yours. Is it kind of the arrangement you have the dots of light, like on here:
http://conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=179028&stc=1&d=1186038203
They look bright on first glance but then on closer inspection they look like regular bright colours, but I just can't get mine to look like that. Is it the kind of brush you use, the colours surrounding the light, etc?
Sorry if I sound kind of demanding =/
Amazing sketchbook!
damienflux
August 2nd, 2007, 11:55 PM
Well as for me , on reaching the highlights , i must constantly be aware of the surrounding values , and to hit the right brightness ,the surrounding value mustnt be as bright as to compete with the highlight itself,Since the highlight is after all a type of focus point.(ps. i dont use any other brush other than hardbrush and softbrush in ps)
And you may want to try this , i nvr really use white as a highlight as maximum value (i try to not over exhaust the potential of the brightness) if everything goes mega shiny , the work kinda lose attention. I use basic colour contrast like a warm skin should apply a baby cyan as highlight. Or yellow.
In some cases u can define highlight by using extremely small spots or specks of supercharged colours , n placing it around randomly would give it a pore like texture.
And for some practices i also learned that the sharpness of the highlight depends on the surface , a wet or moist , oily surface tend to catch Sharp specks of highlight.
(:/) I am afraid thats the best i can translate...Hope it helps in abit.

Wow, some really great stuff in here. Favorites are the cyborg chick, and the pencils in post # 17. I was wondering for you paintings what kind of brush settings do you normally use? ( such as flow, opacity settings) or do you just set them both to pen pressure? Just wondering, since I'm currently working on a painting, and think the build up of my strokes and how I'm using the settings probably aren't the most effective way. Oh wanted to comment on the cyborg painting, in the step by step, I think the eyes would have looked pretty insane in black. :bounce:

September 29th, 2007, 03:38 AM
Actually , most of the time i do not touch the opacity setting , the only changes i do is to the flow , I tend to use thicker flow(70%) during the start of painting , and during colour changes n some minor edits , i would set the flow to about , 40%, it all depends on how solid you wish of ur work to look , i think i need to learn how to soften things at the same time , having everything harsh n sharp isnt gonna do ...

dayum I shouldn't have restarted a new thread on new post...:oneye:
Anyway here begins my hibernation period from school , and procrastination has once again diseased my healthy mind. the works i posted below are children that didn't make it out.
I just decided , Blah ,why not just do a cesarean and just post them prematurely. Most of them are about 70% and up but i couldn't find the motivation to finish them, sadly its a bad habit of mine.
Ps.note to self , Detailing should be left last.

Right , what a trip to the hiatus , at my previous endeavor i was so certain i am gonna keep this sketchbook rolling , hiding behind the validation of too busy being a human being.
Congratulate me , i have survived Thy Diploma level and hauled myself a good solid month of rest and recuperation. Unfortunately here in my country , the noble and modest land , Males have to serve the nation for 2 and a half years , If i am not wrong , i should have about less than a month before i become canned food myself.
so right , i am going to act like there is an invisible myriad of audience all over and salvage this stagnant post! yea this is starting to feel like a blogging thing... uurg!
Goodnight now Conceptart , Been always on my mind our little affair.

Awesome stuff Damien!! Great use of graphic elements in your pieces! And the often distorted anatomy makes the poses all the more beautiful!! I hereby bow to your skill with skintones, the first image in post #59 is incredible, excellent rendering on the skin.
Nice work on the character in post #37 too, great book cover illustration quality to it, must be some thing to do with the saturation of the colours.
Keep up the great work!!!

Here i am , flash forward from a block leave in Army , yes here in Singapore we do have to serve with or without our consent so yes i am an artist both fluent in Rifle and Pencil , patriotism aside i figured since its been awhile i've posted anything so i'll just dump in my Final year project titled Genesis8.
An extract of some stills from a short Film i have collaborated with my classmate Jessica fedora. It was quite a grueling 6 months worth of work. Lots of far fetch conceptualization of God , existence , and creationism all of which loosely converted into a 5 minute short film.
Jessica focuses on the animation part of the work , and i serve to illustrate , its a pity the concept came quite late during the whole process and we din manage to grapple the optimum time to finish this work With a golden sheen.
Illustrations are all done in photoshop then later imported to Adobe aftereffect for animation , resulting in a beautiful effect of paper cutout animation.

Good practice stuff you have here. I suggest loading the pencils along with the digi coloring so we can see your line work to try and learn from it.
On the black girl, can I suggest you make the lightning in her hand a bit more of a focal point? It's obvious you want to emphasize that, but it's so small that one will simply glance over it. Make it a bit bigger and add some bounce light on her skin and hair, maybe clothes to bring it out to the front.
Keep rocking and updating more often.
