Not finished with this yet. Its an homage to Howard Pyle and to Mike Mignola. Its called, "have I seen this before?"
It will be going to oils also, and I need to find a way to scan it. It is 18 x 24. Just my luck to draw something way to out of scale for the scanner.
Thanks

You should be able to go to a Kinkos or somewhere and use one of their BIG scanners that they usually have.
Oh, yes, and the picture is completely awesome. I'm not a big fan of the swirly sky though.

Spectacular drawing. I am very impressed.
One thing that you might consider is adding a bunch of ropes going this way and that, or a tattered sail blowing in the current.
You could try scanning it in pieces and then reassembling in Photoshop, but that can often be a big pain. Kinkos is probably your best bet.
Great work, again.

I feel a bit weird giving critique to you - not worthy, not worthy - but here goes - I'm getting a tangent feeling with the group of dead sailors and Abe's leg - it's causing some visual tension for me - you might consider moving Abe to the right?

Hot damn this is fantastic! Just out of curiosity, did you base Abe off of the costume they are using for the movie or is this your own interpretation?

My God I'm dumb.
I didn't even see the bubbles, for some reason. Actually, I don't know what I was thinking, because know that I see the bubbles, and the ocean, the picture is about 99.99% cooler.

My God you can draw so well, it must take a very long time to get to that level of quality. excellent

Great work...you're gonna really like the movie. Though the Abe character is my least favorite in the movie version. But Ron Perlman is the perfect Hellboy. So glad Vin Diesel didn't get it.

hoi Geez...thanks for all the response to this. I am almost done now. I am going to kinkos to shrink it I hope, otherwise, its a digital shot again. I want to keep it in the pad, but I think you have to run the art through the machine for it to reduce it. I have to fill in the rest of the skeletons, but here is the rest of the composition as well.
The skeleton tangency; I know it feels that way, but I did that on purpose to keep them less important. The Flying Dutchman should be the focus and most all the lines zero in on him. Then up top the swirly lines complement abes head. http://www.rev-art.com/lemenimages/abe2.jpg I have some values to adjust, but its almost there now...
Thank you guys again, and keep the comments coming. I appreciate your honesty when something looks wrong. I would do the same thing. Its only fair, and I can take it...heh

Awesome drawing! Can't wait to see more.
How about a beard on one of those skeletons. I'm not sure if facial hair stays on a skeleton like the head hair does but I think that would look cool. One of the skeletons with a burning red beard.
Also some distortion in the water where Abe is moving, kinda like the heat off the horizon of the road distorts what your seeing. I hope that makes sense.
I really like the Frank Frazetta ICON book in the back ground, it does wonders.

I really, really like it. But wtf is going on?! :p
fredflickstone
August 15th, 2003, 04:38 PM
heh, thank you Kress. If you arent familiar with old illustration, it may make no sense...the background was a painting by howard pyle called The Flying Dutchman. It had a captain on his deck, and a few scared pirates fighting the treacherous seas. I took it underwater, and made it into an underwater exploration, Abe Sapien has come across this ghost ship that just happens to be the same image as Howard pyles painting, only the pirates are skeletons now, and I added about 6 more to the original lineup.
When its in color, it will make more sense...

Hey Ron
Had you thought about foreshortening Abe more, so there is more of a sense of looking down at the scene?
Anyway, nice work as always - it's cool to see you do more "made up" stuff.

gorilla777-heh, thanks...
francis, always causing trouble.:D No, we are looking almost straight at abe, the camera has a down tilt to it so more of the ground is in view. I didnt want him looking up at the camera for a pinup(cover) piece. gotta show the man off. BUt thank you for the comment, I am looking at it a bit more now, that was one area that I had to redraw a few times to figure out what I wanted to do.
Nordstrand, T-thank you. Feet are fun for me to draw for some reason. I guess its all those interviews I read from comic artists who said they just cut the feet off cause they couldnt figure them out. I wanted to get it right...
3bleadpencil-thank you, I have a writer working on something because of inspiration from this...I hope we can do it, it has Lobster Johnson in it, a favorite, underused character...

Hi Ron -
Just got around to see this -- Looks like you're really havin' some FUN! The anatomy on Abe especially is just superb!
It's impressive to see you take a study so far...I never feel like I've enough time to do that...
There's so many great things to compliment it's hard to come up with some constructive crit... I'll try anyway -- ummm...
abe's left hand and wrist look a smidge big, if they were just a little bit smaller, (more foreshortened?), they might drop back in space more effectively...but then it might mess with your compositional structure...ah well...
I also tend to fall out of the picture to the left...following the light value of the sloping deck... rather than staying in the picture and moving around the skeletons and abe... I'm sure you saw this too... it's only minor, 'cause once you get to the painting, you're probably going to solve it with color and value...hmmm, or maybe some semi-transparent foreground bubbles or swirls to repeat abe's bubble motif or the swirl motif and imply a focus to where abe is looking - off to the left, (is he supposed to be looking directly at us?) --- This makes more of a "tunnel" composition --- but that's probably not what you wanted to do...so many probems, so many solutions...
Keep going! Paint-it soon! We wanna see paint!

BEAUTIFUL!!! It's amazingly drawn and is a good reflection of the styles you are paying homage to.
I wish I knew what was happening though... it's like a really cool pic of Abe stuck on a really cool pic of pirates. I wish there was more interaction or story.

cobaltx-thank you very much.
prismacolor-I actually agree with everything you said. Its not done in this image, so there are still holes everywhere. I am almost finished, and eager to begin the color version...
MindCandyMan-heh, thank you...I think...
LC3-it will hopefully make more sense when I post the finished version. Its more an homage piece than anything else...thank you.
Hardcore-thank you, since I dont havemuch in there yet, I am happy it looks like that...
I have been busy with a freelance job that took up a lot of time, the extra time I have to post. I have some tutorials to put up again soon. Thanks again for the kind words. I have a finish to post soon as well.
Talk soon.
