Gear up my fellow 3d artists! The next challenge is a hard one, that is to do a sculpt in honor of Gangus. We'll leave the time frame at one month. This time around I'd like to be a bit more restrictive. For the daring of you I'd like to do a recreation of this Gangus work in 3d

http://www.gangus.net/images/valkyr.jpg

For those that don't feel they are up to this task I'll still help with crits for your chosen subject.

Once again WIP shots are encouraged. At least one, but I recommend once a week.

I'll make up a new poll at the end of August.

Now get to work!

can i try to do just a bust of the subject? (am guessing here, i just thought that a bust would be easier to do than a full figure?) or i should give it a go and the things learn will be more useful than just sculpting a bust? will need to do loads of sketches to try and work and figure out how the front looks like....got any more reference drawings?

Not sure what you mean by 2D+3D, but I'm game to see what you come up with and yes you can limit things to a bust. And this is his only drawing of the girl so the opposite side is open to interpertation.

I like the sketches Zenichi, great motion. The equipment references are a great find too. Can't wait to see some clay put up.

I see that she has a 5-point harness but I can't figure out what she has hanging by her left leg... a flight bag perhaps? That's the only thing I couldn't sculpt because I don't know what it is.

I'll also have to find a reference for how the harness connects in the back. I see a single D-ring but the rest is covered.

Sculpting her chest as nude is tempting but I think a small tight tank top would be more "classy".

Nice sketches zenichi. The reference photos will be helpful with details.

Thank you Garyo for setting up this challenge to honor Glen Angus. His art is amazing and his passing was so tragic.

Could anyone post pictures of Gangus himself? Prefferably in profile.

Great sketches zenichi, and good refs.

I'm guessing the bag is eiter a flight bag or maybe her parachute.

As for Gangus pictures I think I saw some over in the General forum links I'll take a look and see if we can find something.

err... big problem, used up a few feet of aluminum wire and still cant get an armature that's strong enough or capture the dynamic of the pose enough (maybe its not needed at this stage?). still trying to search thread and net for armature tutorials. hopefully when i do put some clay on, it'll stick! struggling with armature and the pose...cant seems to bridge the devide between 2D sketches and 3D sculpt. hopefully will overcome it somehow....

was thinking of partially concealing her chest with the harness! (major reason being- excuse to avoid sculpting the bomber jacket!)

Glen's art was partially responsible for me stumbling into concerpart.org, as i was searching for "girls image on war plane" for my model kit! which is why i felt that i need to do this challenge thou it seems like an unsurmountable task at the moment, even if i dont make the deadline, i felt that i need to somehow overcome these obstacles and have something (at least for myself) to remember him.

KonstantinZ, probably best if you do a google on him and you'll find his portrait, 3-quarter photos etc. showing after a few pages of his art!

Here's a link with a couple of pictures of Glen... http://features.cgsociety.org/story_custom.php?story_id=4169 don't know if they'll help. There are more links at the bottom of that page that lead to some more insipring things too.

As for Zenichi's armature problem Get some brass or steel music wire to run through the weak areas in need of more support. Wrap them with the aluminum to lock them in, if you use water clay be aware that the steel will rust and discolor the clay.

Hope that helps.

Hey guys!

I have been very busy these few past weeks so I didn't get much done, but I have the idea down and just need to get it all togather. Here is a quick preview to show that I am still in:D. It's dark because thats how I sculpt at night hehe. I'll get some daylight sculpting time this weekend (hopefully) and should get this rolling. The hand should harden enough in a day or two for me to be able to carve.
:bashful:

Hey guys, WIPs? Poke, poke sharp stick... Do you want to leave the dead line open? I should be finishing up my project next weekend and can give the challenges more time again. I plan on doing a basics challenge for September that will be all about hands.

Yeah I need at least 2 more weeks on mine. Kind of busy with a lot of projects. I'll post WIPs tomorrow or if I am lucky tonight. If it doesn't rain:D

PS: Basic challange about hands should be great!
edit:here are the wips. It's called "In the clouds" and there is a long way for it to go.

Oooo now I can see! Very inspirational! My only crits are the nose mouth area. The nostrils seem to be on more of a slant instead of a nice flying v. The lips also seem a bit too high crowding the nose and giving a bit of a lantern jaw appearance. I'm looking forward to seeing how you resolve the clouds. I take it you want to do this as a bias relief?

Thank you Gary!
I see what you are talking about and hopefully I can fix it and get the clouds effect going. I should have a day to work on it on Sunday if it doesn't rain.

It's cone 10 stoneware.
