ok..decided I'd better start a new one cause I've developed a bit since I started the old one. And because the old one had so many pages, it took forever to load up.

For those who don't know me, I work as a security guard, usually alone for at least 4 hours a day. I have a new laptop loaded up with painter and inkscape, so I aim to be able to produce some finished paintings now and again. Mostly, while at work, I sketch on a clipboard, drawing what's right in front of me or what's in my head. blah...enough. here's today's picture....

Lolz, evil kitty! :evilmustache: And the kitchen sink! :tihi: Very nice werk..

I like the evil coffee, too; but it seems like the perspective of the floor-blob isn't quite right..

I've been working on some entries to a TD that I cannot post here...we ladies are cooking up something hopefully awesome. In the meantime, since I found a bit of a lull ...here's my COW entry

..eh...at least I learnt some more about painter 8. It seems the airbrush can work as a blender if the right settings are done. And...wow..custom brushes?

Also working on EOW..got 2 days to get it done and it's on my laptop..not here. Will post it hopefully soon.

this one is better...had to toss out a lot of what i had painted yesterday because I forgot to make the island float....as the eow required. It was a total "Duh...when in doubt...read the directions"....moment.

followed a face and hair tutorial...the face came out better than i thought...but the hair does need some more work to keep from looking like straw:P

from the stylized animal challenge....perfect for my vector skillz....less than 2 hrs to actually do this one, but due to my 12hr shift today, I sketched a hell of a lot of different goofy hyenas IRL. My co-worker picked the one he liked the most, so I went with it. I'll scan it the original sketch sometime later. Drawn completely in vector.

Very nice work! I'd have to say the antagonist is my favorite as everything just comes together in a very [sur]realistic image. I don't do much vector work, but I like what I'm seeing here.
If you had one weak point, I would say it is anatomy. This will only get better with more practice and studies.

fressh this week..not really doing anything of much importance...just playing around with the image hose in painter. I always wondered how it was done, and it is the one brush that I avoided the most. I view it as a kind of "lens flare" if you get my meaning.

...may as well post this stupid logo. Yeah, yet another sitepoint contest entry:P

I honestly will never understand clients. This is supposed to be for a financial business start up..to me, it looks like it will look better on a security guard badge. No news on what the client has to say on it just yet, though.

Crit on logo: way too illustrative. Remembering that your logo should work well at 1X1 inch, this thing will have major reducability and memorability problems. The best logos can be remembered and designed by anyone (nike, macdons) Simplify it down to its BASE elements. Hand+sword handle and hilt, or sword + wings, or wings + fist, but man with wings holding a sword on a cliff, that's waaaaaay too much :)

Do you get a theme to draw in the LMS?

llothcat
January 14th, 2008, 01:55 AM
Thanks to you both for posting....

Jason: I think you're right, but it is based upon what the customer requested. Mine was the most simple of the entries....but it looks like the client punked out on that one, thus no payola for me this time:P

Diphallia: welp, you'll need to visit the thunderdome thread for the full details as well as the LMS web addy. I've just forgot the addy for both, but they're easy enough to find on the forum.

Now...I'm sure everyone's encountered the "homies" figurines by now at this point. I saw em recently and these guys just popped into my brain and just wouldn't leave me alone until i committed them to paper. I call em furry hoodies.

moar...fresh today....sorta...it's actually been on my laptop for a week now, and I kinda lost track of it.

Managed to get in touch with some local art groups here in the Inland Empire. Sadly, I can't expect good crits from them. There is one or two really good artists in the group, the rest seem to be beginners for the most part. Once I mentioned that I painted digitally, I got blank stares. I showed a piece to them, which is what was expected.

The guy in charge of the group tried to get me to explain the working process that I use. To me, it's pretty straight forward....you paint in your computer. :P They still didn't get it. I think they expect me to be cutting and pasting or something, rather that actually painting.

I think I'm gonna haveta demonstrate next meeting or something.

Oh, this is NOT the piece I showed.

Remember to get composition and design down first. Color is a bit tough, but remember to not stray away from the master plan, especially when moving into color. Remember that things should get tiny as they move back into space. Try using a horizon line. If your ground is above the HL then you're way off base. That line should be the place where things tend to disappear, where sky meets ground. Unless there are mountains blocking the way. Even clouds have a perspective. bigger chunkier shapes in the foreground and small little shapes in the background. But also remember that rules are meant to be broken as you can imply a large scaled shape in the background and throw something small in the foreground remember the perspective should make sense or the illustration will be unsuccessful. I am not sure if you using reference at all, but it doesn't hurt to use it. Remember that you are still the artist. Use what you need in reference to get something right. YOu should immediately notice that something is wrong or looks wonky try getting them right. Take some time on just one painting to figure things out. Study a nude figure. It's not about just being fast. It's also about the knowledge attained whenever you sit down and paint. But, don't become a robot when it comes to painting have fun with it and make it a learning experience. If you're not learning anything then your wasting your time. Just the way I see it. As far as your figures, porportions are kinda everywhere, stiff, anatomy is off, connections to the form become way off base. Try using reference here. It's way essential to get the figure down and looking right or it will look wrong. You don't want wrong. You want slick pieces to be added to your portfolio. Be critical when it comes to precision. Fun-factor should still remain. Hope this helps you on your venture. Good luck.

I'm having a lot of brain farts right now, especially over the POW challenge. So.

It's doodle time to work it out.
