IMPORTANT: PC users worldwide have succumbed to a nasty little worm that exploits a loophole in windows. Principally, the symptoms involve being given 60 seconds before the machine shuts down. Symantec/Norton's (www.norton.com) and Microsoft's (www.microsoft.com) sites have more information. The most comprehensive advice I was given was this (specific to XP - the MS site has advice for closing ports under Windows 2000):

To stop it restarting simply ctl + alt + delete and kill msblast.exe
Then search the Hard drive for msblast.exe and delete it.
Turn on the XP Firewall. (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/networking/icf.asp)
Then download the lastest Windows patch. You shouldnt get cut off and restarted every minute.
Make sure your virus software is up to date and you've got a firewall (fully updated). Zone Alarm is free and pretty good, so there's no excuse.

hope this helps.

Haha, yeah...I think it's weird that this worm has infected so many people...I mean, Microsoft actually fixed this hole about a month ago, so if you actually update windows regularly (which you should if you don't) you won't have to care about this warning...
You should still install a good firewall if you haven't already, though. :D

and apparently theres no problem in updating Windows even if *ahem* Microsoft don't know you have it *cof*...Stands to reason really, they don't want to be the victim of a denial of service, regardless of who's on the other end.

My boss was so pissed at work yesterday. He is not a tech savy guy and had NO idea what the hell was happening everytime he turned on the computer.

There was actually a news report saying : "Stay off the internet on the 14th and 15th of August!!", silly really
