a boring thread begins...

Would a 6x11 Intuos 3 (widescreen tablet) act just the same as a 6x8 if its being used on a non-widescreen monitor?

And..

Which is better: a 9x12 Intuos 2 (which is what I have right now) or a 6x11 Intuos 3 for dual monitors?

Thanks!

You're asking for a friend right? I thought you didn't do artwork anymore!

Do you normally draw across 2 monitors? If not, I'd recommend getting one that matches your aspect ratio. I have a 9x12 Intuos 2 right now and I use it on a widescreen monitor. You can actually adjust the area used and at one point I had it adjusted to have dead zones to correspond to the correct aspect ratio, but honestly, using it normally doesn't alter too much (horizontal lines are a bit more sensitive, but I barely notice).

I plan on getting a 6x11 or maybe the smaller Intuos 3 though because I want a slightly smaller pad and I'd like an Int. 3 so I might as well get one that matches my aspect ratio.

Sorry, that's all the advice I can give ya.

I have the 6x11 intuos3, and it can be mapped to the aspect ratio of your monitor. In some respects, it might actually be able to better match a range of aspect ratios than the 6x8. Another benefit I've found is that just having the extra width gives you some room for your hand to rest without hitting the touch strip or buttons. You should consider where you typically work in the screen area, i.e. where you typically place your tools and palettes and such in relation to the canvas placement. I think the 9x11 is probably better suited to a nice high-res true widescreen monitor (not the bargain chopped-off standard resolution "widescreen" monitors you see everywhere. Look for a 1920x1280). Dual monitors will either rob resolution from your tablet, or force the tablet mapping into a strange horizontally-compressed that may or may not be comfortable, even if you're using a widescreen-format tablet. In any case, you can't go wrong with the 6x11, and it's less wrong if you do plan to use a dual setup. Come to think of it, it would probably be pretty close to a natural 1:1 match if you rotate the dual monitors to a portrait format. This is where you whip out your geometry tools and calculate up some rectangles.

hmm, why do you want to go smaller than your 9x12?. Bigger is better! :P

Would that be...a 24" monitor?

9x12 just takes up a *lot* of room...it's just slightly unwieldy.

I think my 21" widescreen does that resolution. It's one of them thar Dell's.

Opinion of the 9x12's bulkiness seconded. Not only that, but I found the larger hand movements uncomfortable for the way I'm accustomed to working. Scaling up the tool requires scaling up the motor training you've built into your hand. I was torn between the 9x12 and 6x11 when I borrowed a friend's 9x12 to help me decide. The conflict would have arisen when I'm working all day on the 6x8 at the office, then I'd be going home to what is essentially an entirely different tool for my personal work. While this may potentially be an appealing shifting-of-gears for some, it wasn't for me. The 6x11 doesn't scale up, rather, it fits the proportions of my home monitor with the same size arm movements I use at work.

I see

So using a 9x12 on a widescreen monitor would not be proportional/ratio correct?

(dumb question but I like closures) :D

widescreen is 16:10, and 9x12 is 4:3 - so nope:hat:

btw I have 1680x1050 monitor and 6x11 intuos 3, works great

Thank you for the knowledge h2rra

Now I am much more content with my 6x11 (I cant use it yet cuz I'm on 'vacation')
