Hn.
Could you be more specific?

You mean 3-D animation or 2-D animation?

If just for fun then EasyToon. You could try these :)

http://www.plasticanimationpaper.dk - Plastic Animation Paper. Free version is limited but good enough for hand drawn stuff (with tablet).
http://www.creatoon.com - They recently made this program free. It's for cut-out style animation like Southpark for example.
http://www.giantscreamingrobotmonkeys.com/monkeyjam/ - if you have lightbox, lot's of paper and fast scanner then try this one. Free pencil test program.
http://www.digicelinc.com/download/moredownloads.htm - Oh. And few seconds ago I found that DigiCel's Flipbook now has Demo version that only adds watermark to animation (it's that v3.78 ) This is professional program but really simple. Unfortunately it didn't support my tablet so no pressure :(.

Toon Boom studio seems pretty cool, I made a few things with the demo. Light version is fairly modest at about $70.. haven't justified buying it yet though.

for me flash, gives you the flexibilty to design websites as well, version 8 is quite good like the improvements over v5

You can also try Anime Studio. Worlds better than Flash if you want to animate characters, and much cheaper.

TVPaint www.tvpaint.com

It used to be called Mirage but version 8.5 is now called TVPaint. I am currently using this software and I love it. This is the closest thing to the traditional workflow, even the brushes are like the real thing, no crappy vector stuff here. Check my blog to see some work I did with it.

It is so good that I even prefer it to photoshop and painter at the moment.

TVPaint looks really good! Anybody know of animation samples done with TVPaint that are as good or better than these vector animated shorts?
