What do you guys/gals think of this piece that is considered as one of the greatest work of art. Is it necessary to have an understanding of art history to appreciate it as it evokes nothing from me.

flawless rendering, colour and composition. Its a subtle painting, and drawing and painting subtley is hard hard hard! It also quite unique from the time, unlike any portrait from that era i have been led to believe... im sure someone else might be able to shed more light on this!
