Scanner Settings?

Not much of a discussion, but... has anyone else's art been butchered by their scanners? Shading in particular? I'm not trying to blame it on the machine or anything, but good god, it turns most of my shading into very messy, ugly-looking crap... or at least, messier, uglier crap. It doesn't seem to want to capture the detail of it.

Any suggestions on how to minimize this? lower contrast and reset it in PS? overall higher dpi?

Make sure you're using your scanner's "advanced" settings, and turn off ALL automatic adjustments. NO auto contrast, NO auto color, NO sharpening, NOTHING. It may look a mess, but all the info should be there when you adjust in Photoshop. Also, even if you just want something at screen resolution, you'll get better results scanning at, say, 150 ppi and downsampling.

Hahaha...I just got my first scanner and hooked it up a few days ago, I scanned in some eye drawings I did and I had spent about an hour or so rendering them, I was proud of them...until I scanned it in and looked at it on my monitor. Then I became sad. :dur:

I eventually found settings that make them look a lot better. Now They're actually decent looking on a monitor. All I did was set all things on the highest quality setting available and scan them in at 600 DPI. I still have to check for what Elwell said to do. :^^:
