View Full Version : IDW #40: Gunship

Topic: Gunship
Background: Unsophisticated firepower packed in a heavily armored, fast moving aircraft/ spaceship. As I went through the past IDW topic I noticed that military themed topics were favoured above others, so here's something to chew on.
Brief:
1. Design a gunship..simple as that :)
2. It not only needs to carry only weapons, but must also be able to deliver a squad of troops close to the front and give them the necessary assistance.
Deadline: Monday July 30th

What do you mean by "unsophisticated firepower"? Catapults? Non-modern/futuristic? Why oh why limit the fun?

this are the troopers ,who are dropped right into space, after the gunship broke the hull of the target.
call them demon soldiers, because of their funny wings.

this is old work, just drop it for inspiration.
take me to poll if the rules allow that,i won't mind if not.

I think maybe the unsophisticated part means no lazers and photon blasters etc. etc. ? Maybe just common gunpowder type projectiles like big ass cannons and gatling guns or whatever etc. I hope this is the case anyway, gonna try my best to submit something for this.

nice! there are two things conceptually however i would like to make note of however:
first, a gunship is more of a helicopter, or something that packs omni directional firepower, while this give more of a "fighter" feel
and second, it needs to be able to ferry troops into combat (per the reqs)
i like the ship tho :D

Dragon4lunch: Just to clarify this little issue: "unsophisticated" here means that it shouldn't be too subtle :P I was thinking of the A-10 Warthog when writing the brief, and instead of some fancy rockets or laser-guided bombs the weapon this aircraft is most famous for is that big gun under its nose. So no worries, it's not in the brief either :)
White Wolf: As Legato already mentioned, it should also be able to carry and deploy troops. Keep that in mind please :)

Someone told me that fixed canons on a troop transport dont really make so much sense, so I will probably remove those.

its ok as long as the troops have a firm stomach... i can't imagine diving runs would be too fun in the back with your buddies puking all over ya :D

White Wolf: I dunno 'bout it looking like a Viper.....more like a Raider....;)
So in this particular instance "unsophisticated" means basically throwing tons of lead at the targets....yay!

Yes I agree it is pretty much off-topic :) ....don't worry I wont develop it for the poll... but thanx for the advise... forgott about the the fact that it has to carry troops..
But good to know that a gunship is a helicopter-sort of thing...thought its a plain combat airplane...

well, when i came into the thread, the only concept of a gunship i had was that of a helicopter, but i guess if you wanna be fair, the AC130 gunship... is a gunship as well *gasp!* (and its the only airplane to mount artillery to boot)
i don't know why i automatically assumed it was a vtol type of setup, but if your gunship, plane thing can hold troops i guess its still good... but i have no authority on the matter :D

That's right :) although the gunship should also have the ability to put those troops quickly into combat close to the frontline, so vtol is a logical solution here. Other approaches are welcome as well though.
Another example of a gunship is the one from the Star Wars films (2 and 3) with the Clone Troopers in it.

here's my entry. i got a bit carried away with painting it.
the TZ51 is designed to drop down from the orbit of a planet to deliver troops safely into a hot zone. it has very little maneuvering capability inside the atmosphere, but this is more than made up for by its firepower and extremely fast vertical take off.

My contribution :)
The Hydoch aerospace TN-120 "Cicada". Designed to operate in pairs, the Cicada is equipped with automatic projectile weaponry and many hard points for exterior mountings. Though reliant on mostly obsolete technologies, the redundancy of the craft means it can take a beating and still maintain altitude. The standard crew is 8, but with marines the Cicada can transport up to 20.

So...I only saw the title "Gunship" and this idea popped into my head. Of course, upon seeing the other ideas here I believe I did deviate a bit from the brief, with its magical sail-flying abilities. But here it is anyway.

*NOTE* if the picture isn't showing up the link should still work - i don't know why the image is on the fritz!
ok, heres the final image*
the iberian is a close support gunship allowing flexible firepower to be delivered from the blowing dunes of the desert to specific windows and rooms in urban environments.
the two forward guns are anti-infantry guns designed to tear through soft targets and lay down suppressive fire.
the two rear guns (folded back while not in use) are of a much higher caliber and fire sabot or explosive rounds, designed to bust hardened targets.
the cockpit canopy is made up of armored plates, the crew of 3 (pilot/gunner/gunner) are not only surrounded by a visual depiction of their external environment via monitors but also have a full frontal helmet display. video is gained through hundreds of small optical devices scattered around the hull while high definition multi-spectrum feeds are delivered through the 4 dome cameras, and each gun's dedicated sighting array.
main propulsion is gained via the wing mounted turbo blowers and primary lift is achieved through a combination of these and the two rear mounted turbo blowers.
the rear compartment can house 6 fully combat ready infantry who are protected behind armored shutters.

Haven't posted in half a year! (old version's: http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k151/JohnnyhorseCA/IDW-40v0.3copy.jpg )

[EDIT again] I had some time today to work on it more. There's some interesting designs coming out now. This kind of topic is always fun.

I'd like to get chance to refine this before the round closes - I am not happy with much at all, but the background doesn't really match the lighting and the wing blur are both particularly poor to my mind.

The X-CAT v8r: troop transport gunship. The X-Cat v8r is the ultimate gunship for warfare of the future. When grounded, it's nano stealth skin allows for camouflage from ground and satellite observers, while still providing radar stealth during flight. Twin Electro-gravitic thrusters allow for extended flight times and near silent running. Max capacity is 20 crew; 18 troops, 1 pilot, 1 gunner. Frontal gatling and rear mounted cannons allow for effective offensive and defensive manuvers.
