View Full Version : Yamada forest WIP, and 32 Scott WIP studies

Hello again,
Here at Design Studio Press I'm excited to be putting together another interesting book. Over the last 11 weeks three Art Center students, Khang Le, Felix Yoon and Mike Yamada have been working hard in the creation of "The Skillful Huntsman". The book will document the concept design process of the three students as they developed the characters, environments and props of this Brother's Grimm fairy tale. Imagine a cool "art of" movie book, but it comes out before the movie. Our design discussions, crits of the work, and the "how to's" of how they did what they did will be the focus of the book. We should wrap up production in about 2 to 3 months and then we will go to print, so watch our web site for previews and news of when the book will go on sale.
Okay, now to what this piece is. I was bored while running some prints of this project so I started to put some color over a sketch that Mike had done of a forest direction. I'm going to finish it up a bit more over the next week, for now here is the WIP.

These look fantastic. I went to Art Center last week to turn in my portfolio, and stopped by(accidentally) the skillful huntsman presentation. Man, I was blown away. I couldn't believe how stunning all the diff. comps and versions of each character, building, environment, color, weapons, etc...
I was thrilled, and it fueled me even more about Art Center. I will be one of the first ones to buy that book, when it comes out.
Please keep us updated on the book, and on these fine pics of yours.

Rellik,
Thanks, will do.
sic1,
Thanks, the guys will be happy to hear that.
Deth Jester,
Thanks, I'm planning to do much more to it. Just a bit of tightening and design work near the lower 1/3rd.
I.was.ink,
Thanks, yeah I thought the presentation went well. You should have said hello, I was around there off and on all day. We are about 85% complete with the art work, and I'll be getting into adding text in a couple of weeks.
egerie,
Thanks. Will do.
foster,
LOL, thanks man. I'll try to not screw it up.
Also thanks for the great endorsement you wrote for Carlos H.

scott, these images are amazing. Thank you already for the first book, it has helped me a lot in my teaching by examples in my classes at the atelier. Your work is outstanding, and these examples obviously reflect what a great instructor of imagination you are. I would love to pick your brain some time. Thanks for all that you are sharing.

These are all so beautiful. Thank you for sharing. You inspired me with the first post to do some, and so I made some small thumbnail environments based off of what you showed us. I'll post them later, when I have a lot of them done. :)
Small question:Are these your design or are they intially drawn by mike yamada?

whOA this work is truly top notch.
the piece with the three figures overlooking teh landscape--i think the figures could be a little lighter and maybe have some very subtle value variations to show form but not detract fromt eh BG
I LOVE IT BTW!!
damn it must be nice to whip out fully colored and atmospheric concepts this fast
i also really enjoyed yall's book--very inspiring
keep up the great work and please keep em coming'--ty

Oh man Scott, I wish I was previlaged enough to work with you on this project.. I have to show this to my professor.. he's a fan of all your books.
If it's not too much to ask I would like for this book to include some of the Napkin' sketches in your next book.. to see where and how the brainstorming for this process began

what I love about these is that it seems like such a peculiar approach. They verge precariously on the abstract, like when people make a scribble then pull out faces. Except in this case you're putting people on them, and engines. It's very interesting.
Scott Robertson

Isric,
You are right on the money. I start these by sketching a few pages of shapes and things on vellum with grey markers and then I scan them, collage them in one grey scale file and start playing around with different compositing methods, overlay, multiply etc.. Then I zoom in, turn off and on layers, then when I see a composition I like and I have an idea for the subject matter I flatten the file and copy and paste the part I want to try out into a new file. I made about 10 grey scale comps out of my most recent collage file. After I have this done I usually work with only one additional layer to find/develop the designs. After I have the basic forms going I switch to color mode and start by colorizing the whole image and then I introduce more colors and continue to paint. These are just quick studies, and meant to be nothing more. I will pick a few to spend more time on, further refining the designs, correcting the loose perspectives, hopefully improving the color work and rendering quality.
This exercise reminds me of being a kid again when I would see objects and things in the shapes of clouds. You can tell I'm on vacation now.....
2 more, not going to finish the blue one, but thought I would post it anyway.

I missed that thread for a reason or another, but man, what a surprise!
Those are fantastic! the concepts are really interesting, with awesome lighting and intersting shapes and composition. And what is also quite impressive is the speed at which you drop these.
Very nice work.

Beautiful environment studies...great color/ atmosphere comps too!
That's a great concept development method you explained!
I LOVE to scribble and find the picture! I've done similar things with 20% gray prismacolors on paper, for years and years- for everything, characters, critters, vehicles and environments. Its a daily warmup for me...
I go thru a lot of 20% markers...
And I scribble-design on the computer too...
but I never really thought about combining them... well DUH!
That's so cool...ya learn sumpin new everyday on this Forum!
Thanks again,
M

Great mood on this, i like all the subtle lightings.
The touchups of the people from the Tech Island is nice but I prefer the looseness of the building in the sketch. Feels like a destroyed abandoned ship dock bridge. It became more rigid here.
It would be great if some of that looseness could be retain and brought to the final.
