View Full Version : Sellis' sketchbook!
July 15th, 2007, 11:15 AM
I'm pretty damn new around here so i'll just start by posting my CHOW 77 entry. I'll be keeping this updated as often as i can so please keep giving me all the c&c you feel i need.
Hope you all enjoy my work and help me improve.
July 15th, 2007, 11:24 AM
that looks great!! :). took me some time to recognize the person there btw ;).
July 15th, 2007, 01:49 PM
looks good. two things. one the legs seem kinda long, and his head is too high. his neck should be alil shorter. other than that, i really like the detail work.
July 17th, 2007, 05:18 AM
Pencil1 Cheers for the comment.
Showdownmetal Yeah completely agree with your crit. Cheers :)
So here's a quick sketch to try and speed up my application of values, don't think they're all correct but don't know if i can see em!!!:x
July 18th, 2007, 09:05 AM
Here's a WIP for a current painting.
SO COME ON FOLKS HIT ME, i want this finished sooooon :)
July 18th, 2007, 01:51 PM
I don't really see a whole lot that needs to be done, you might consider making the lines and edges a little sharper. Other than that this looks really good so far.
July 20th, 2007, 10:55 AM
The second update to my Demonhunter.
More crits please :)
July 20th, 2007, 04:11 PM
Yeah, had to look for a figure on that first one.
As to the current one, it seems that the lower body
does not attach to the upper body, the furthest leg in particular.
Looks like you could cut and move the legs back to line up.
Other than that, it is coming along nicely.
August 13th, 2007, 12:50 AM
Sellis... nice start... show us ur sketches!!!
August 13th, 2007, 02:22 PM
Here's an update for you all to crit to pieces,
Coldrum Sketches coming soon :P
All crits Welcome so go for it :}
August 13th, 2007, 03:14 PM
The trees/foilage in the background of the demon hunter WIP seem a bit faded to me, as if they are translucent. Also I don`t know if you want to make a bit of room for the sky between the cloud to help the composition? (although that`s preference I think)
With the towers, more detail in the extreme foreground mabye?
Really nice work though, I`m jealous.
August 13th, 2007, 03:23 PM
Wow! love your work. inspiration blast!:inject:
August 15th, 2007, 03:31 AM
I'd try making that guy's knee more prominent, The silhouette confused me around the leg area, I'd just raise it up maybe 10 degrees or less- because it runs parallel with the sword which throws the eye right now, but a small change to that will increase the effectiveness alot! =)
awesome stuff too, keep posting please!!
September 10th, 2007, 06:26 PM
Haven't been on in a while but here's a sketch for this weeks COW 'The Stormbringer' More to come!!!

lovely colours, and the demon hunter is very energetic.
you seem to have a decent knowledge of anatomy, but there are lots of problems with proportions ie length of legs/necks . . . makes me wonder whether this is deliberate?
September 14th, 2007, 09:42 AM
Fast art Thanks very much :P
Halfmonk Again, Thanks :)
Bones Weep Tedium You're right, i can sort of grasp anatomy but its something i need to practice a lot more in order to make my characters more convincing. Thanks for the kind comments though.

Great work, not much here but all of it is top notch! I like all of those small figures on the page, good way to try out a lot of ideas quickly, I might try it out myself. Anyway keep up the great work!

November 12th, 2007, 02:47 PM
dude, you are great! keep drawing :)
November 12th, 2007, 05:31 PM
vimmel Thanks man ^^
Stage one of a new drawing............hopefully finish this soon.
November 13th, 2007, 08:01 AM
Wow dude you are are a very talented chap! Love those black and white character figures (and pretty much everything else in here!). The only suggestion I have for you is maybe you could lessen the symmetry of your enviroment, it is a little too centred and even, which to me makes it a little predictable, maybe, I'm grabbing at strings here!
Very, very nice sketchbook, keep em coming and I will certainly be revisiting!
November 19th, 2007, 06:23 PM
Depict Yeah, really wasn't fussy with that environment but it was to try and colour in a pencil drawing i did...not to happy with it in all honesty but heh. Thanks for your kind comments though :)
Some quick hand doodles to improve my anatomy! I know some are WAAAAY off!
January 6th, 2008, 03:51 PM
A quick lil' dump, finished these a little while ago but never got round to postin' em!
P.S. Hope you all had a good New Year and Xmas :P
January 9th, 2008, 04:44 PM
Stu thanks so much for your kind words, I"ll more than gladly return the favour hehe. Let me start by saying how much I love your inked character concepts. Your inking style looks fresh and has this really awesome edge to it...and the characters are well thought out too boot...
I also really like how versatile you seem to be...good stuff.
January 9th, 2008, 06:38 PM
Zeroe Cheers man, appreciate you returning the favour :D Versatile? dunno about that, just kind of enjoy trying new things but hey as long as i can expand my folio and skills there no problem there :P Thanks again.
A 10 minute break from the stress headache that is my LMS entry, a square brush and a cup of tea and this was the result!
January 10th, 2008, 06:59 PM
looked the quick sketch i did last night and realised although it only took 10 mins it was a pile of **** so i revisited it......crits welcome
January 10th, 2008, 09:24 PM
That latest one is cool. I like the visible progress and development of the drawing within just the two frames...very sweet.
January 12th, 2008, 11:15 AM
Another quicky, love playing with this loose approach to sketching, its much more fun :P
Zeroe Thanks again :^^:
January 27th, 2008, 04:14 PM
A quick step by step of my latest :) Part of the art crusade forum thread!
And the final piece:
January 27th, 2008, 07:08 PM
turned out nice man, the yellowy splash with the hair was a good call. I'd maybe have used a little less shiney on the swords, and sharpened up the left hand (as we see it) one
January 28th, 2008, 06:56 PM
Daveneale Yeah mate, know what you mean so i did some tweaks.
January 28th, 2008, 09:25 PM
damn I'm in love with what i'm seeing here!.. subscribed for sure.
Keep posting man I love it!
January 31st, 2008, 01:49 PM
Fabulous sketchbook here, I love how you put your concepts together, and I'd love to see more creature concepts, the ones you had on the previous page were awesome. Nothing to crit, it all looks top notch!
February 5th, 2008, 05:50 AM
Hey dude, i just replied to your email.... if that wasn't you that sent it then ignore this post, but I doubt it could be anyone else. :)

February 18th, 2008, 02:33 AM
great stuff :) keep it up
February 23rd, 2008, 01:12 PM
Dammit! Love your artworks...just sneaked in after seeing you the first time posting in COW or at least i didn't remember entries from you before ;)
Keep up the hot shit...You have many skills, which are relevant for a great artist. Good designs, rendering, composition, you know how to create atmosphere etc
Really awesome and promising.
I won't leave without a note though...
Your images look all a little bit monochromatic, which can be a matter of style no question, but sometimes a different, opposite color to the general color theme gives the artwork a POW and a BANG :)
It's like you did 95% percent of the work perfectly, the last 5 % you need to set selective and wisely and there you are ;)
I made 2 quick paintovers on 2 of your artwork, to show what i mean...i hope you don't mind. Basically i added some minor details, with opposing colors to the main theme...the changes are very little, but the effect is unlike larger:
1. The focus gets another important detail and appears stronger
2. The color theme gets a nice twist, resulting in a more interesting impression
3. It gives more definition, depth and volume to the relevant areas
4. A little story is implemented only through this small additions (in this case about the chars)
5. Better separation between fore- and background
February 23rd, 2008, 04:24 PM
Almost missed this great sb.
Your B&W sketches are fantastic<3, I wish I know how to bring costume into my characters like you do. And your environment is still improving, #53 really shows that.
February 23rd, 2008, 04:45 PM
Impressive sketchbook , upu kinda have everithing that i like to do , character , enviromental , tumbnails , studies , ... this is my favorite (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=309840&stc=1&d=1203786884)
February 23rd, 2008, 04:49 PM
Neat sketchbook. Those little Sci-Fi military concepts are really good man, they look convincingly solid. Really like the way you work in monochrome, colours are looking good too. You have some pretty solid skills.
February 26th, 2008, 04:36 PM
February 26th, 2008, 04:46 PM
I like what i see in here. definately subscribing.
February 26th, 2008, 04:54 PM
subscribed. and i have to agree with fuzzybear, because those two minor adjustments on your pre-existing sketches really make a difference. i'm really diggin your ideas and where everything is going but try out some different opposite and different colors in your sketches and see what you can come up with. just a comment to try and make you expand. other then that i really like everything you've got going on. keep it up brah.
February 26th, 2008, 06:27 PM
nethus Thanks again man :D
Fozzybar Wow, cheers for stopping by, much appreciated. I know exactly what you mean and ill definately take that into account and try some new stuff out. Thanks Again. :yayca:

February 26th, 2008, 07:41 PM
And another headhunt.
February 26th, 2008, 07:56 PM
Hey stu, nice work on the char thumbs. Environments are good too. The last two are cool although imo the characters could be more clearly defined with lighting and contrast. Shweet stuff
February 26th, 2008, 08:05 PM
Such great stuff here. My eyes spent most of their time on your black and white's on page 2. Any advice you could give about creating characters that way?
February 28th, 2008, 05:54 PM
Coldrum Cheers Jez, you're right. Gotta work on that.
Hive_minD Thanks a lot :D
Some real quickies trying out colours n stuff....
February 28th, 2008, 06:35 PM
Nice river guardian man love the crazy monster things....love the dynamic composition too...I don't know if it was some intended genius or a nice random accident but that round speck thats by the top dudes head that looks like a blurred bit of water near the camera/viewer makes alll the difference..well, it does to me anyhoo
February 29th, 2008, 02:09 AM
cool man keep it up :]
February 29th, 2008, 12:12 PM

March 4th, 2008, 04:03 PM
just a quick throw back to your river gaurdian piece. It's awsome! looking forward to see more pieces like that!
March 5th, 2008, 10:51 AM
Some SICK characters you got flowing in your sketch! faintly remenicent of Justin Sweet.... which is a compliment to be sure! :P Ill be checking back often fosho to offer any insight/crits if needed, no doubt.
March 5th, 2008, 05:32 PM
I just *LOVE* those black and white char concepts on page two. Wonderful!
You have strong characters, and I've noticed you in the AC. :)
On the god of leaves, it seems to me that the colours are slightly off in the highlighting though, didn't read the details as good as I've should have in such a nice concept.
I also like your riverguardian, it's simple but very clear, it gets across the idea immidiatly. I'd love to see some more detailed work on the light and colours though. Not sure if it'd ruin the picture for that one, though.
March 6th, 2008, 08:08 AM
i LOVE your style!!!!
you are one of my favorites... :P
March 8th, 2008, 10:19 AM

Quick WIP for C.O.W. Stilt Stalker.
March 20th, 2008, 01:10 PM
Love the character designs! In the one above, I like it better with the helmet, gives it a greater sense of mystery, plus its a cool helmet design.
March 24th, 2008, 06:09 AM
Quinn Simoes Cheers mate :P
My COW stilt stalker
March 26th, 2008, 01:33 PM
After seeing your recent C.O.W. I had to come check your sketchbook. I've gotta say man...... I'm impressed. I see the Just Sweet influence coming in on these latest few (post #72,#79) - (not a bad thing at all) but I wanted to let you know that I really like the loose look on most of these. Your character work is very strong. I'd love to see more creature designs from you, rough sketches, quick paintings or finals...very cool stuff. post #63 is quite awesome..the sea scene.
March 27th, 2008, 03:51 PM
Really sweet images you have here.
In this (http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/9378/vikingadn9.jpg) one, I can see the arm anatomy is a
little messed up. But other than that,
the painting is really something I've
been trying to go after for a while and
could never achieve.
March 27th, 2008, 03:59 PM
Yep nice stuff in here. Like Mike said, the looseness in some of these really works well. The characters and duel pieces are great, though some poses could be a bit more dynamic maybe.
One thing I noticed is that you tend to do the same sort of background for most character pieces (like: sky and ground, that's it). It might be worthwhile to invest some more time in those and get them work for you and the characters in the image. Even if it's just like a branch, rock or whatever, a small object, that interacts with the character. That or go for a real simple and plain background. Though in some images it does work, in post #64 for example I think it is too distracting right now.
Anyway, we should do a duel sometime :P
March 27th, 2008, 05:01 PM
all right. here I am
I really love the way you get the motion and emotion in the figures and say everythign you need to say in terms of setting and mood . with out the over rendering that can result in a stiff or plastic surface. Im afraid you will find that a more precis erender is the prefered style here. but I like the freshness and spontinaity that you manage to keep in you r pieces.
March 27th, 2008, 05:49 PM
March 28th, 2008, 01:58 AM
I hereby command you to do more creature designs.
Or, if that's too forceful, I humbly request that you do more creature designs. You have a good design sense, and that came through most clearly in your latest creature creation.
March 28th, 2008, 02:27 AM
oh wow, you keep this up, youre gonna be wicked good... love the viking dude!
March 28th, 2008, 12:19 PM
Mike Corriero The man himself :D Cheers for the kind comments. Glad you stopped by and had a gander. I'm definitely geared up for doing some more C.O.W. whenever i free up some time. Thanks Again.
Mattgamer Cheers bud. You're right, i had a few problems with the arm and in retrospect should have sorted it out.
Yoitisi Backgrounds do seem to be elusive in here lol, i'll get on that asap. Thanks for the comments.
