View Full Version : ***New stuff*** UPDATED 07/27/07!
July 15th, 2007, 01:50 AM
Got some new stuff for you guys.
Wizards of the Coast just released their Tenth Edition today,
so I thought I'd post a few cards I did for it, as well as a couple of World of Warcraft pieces.
I am also posting a poster I did for an upcoming Godzilla-esque book called "Tim, Defender of Earth".
All are painted in oils, but a couple have digital tweaks (like the snow in Flame Tongue).
(oils on board, 9x12 in)
(oils on board with digital modification, 9x12 in)
Wall of Fire:
(oils on board, 9x12 in)
High Overlord Saurfang:
(oils on board, 9x12 in)
(oils on board with digital modification, 9x12 in)
Tim, Defender of Earth:
(oils on board, 15x40 in)
Here's a new piece for an upcoming book entitled "Poison Sleep".
The scene I depicted is true to the story, which is all about modern day witces.
As I started painting the piece, it started to take on a lot of personal interest for me, so I added a lot of unnecessary bleed to the image.
To me, the piece is an allegory of Winter resurrecting Spring.
Oils on Board, 21x25 in.
I will have this on display at Comic Con along with all of the images above.
And a detail for you:

1st post! haha. Dan these are awesome! You are capturing so many moods in this series. great stuff man. Looking forward to hanging with all you guys at SDCC.
July 15th, 2007, 01:59 AM
Saw some of your Magic cards at the release today :)
It's all awesome, but I absolutely love the Fallen Earth piece. Right up my alley.
July 15th, 2007, 02:00 AM
bwuahaha great stuff dan!
July 15th, 2007, 02:02 AM
Wow, so cool to see so much work. Thanks for posting.
July 15th, 2007, 02:42 AM
That honor guard really gets me. I love those lion heads. the scar across his nose kind of makes it look to me like he has a fake nose tip (going nostril to nostril and with the color shift happening in about the same spot) but not enough to really bother me, because everything else is hotness.
July 15th, 2007, 03:15 AM
These pieces seem very luminous, I can feel the heat off the fire and the light...very beautiful :)
July 15th, 2007, 03:24 AM
Very nice, great to see some new stuff. :)
July 15th, 2007, 03:31 AM
You get better with each post!
July 15th, 2007, 04:17 AM
Wow you have such a great control of oils man.
July 15th, 2007, 04:57 AM
Dan your control over this medium is amazing.
the colors and lighting in your work are all jaw-droppingly superb. :)
thanks for these, mate.
July 15th, 2007, 06:07 AM
Haha. It's funny how I think i saw some of these at your studio when I visited you over a year ago. :p I think "Wall of Fire" and "Honor Guard" are my faves! See ya at SDCC :]

y'know for the longest time I thought your stuff was digital... :xpld:
nice stuff as always...but the fact that these are oils just makes it all that much better....very smooth.
July 15th, 2007, 06:25 AM
Sweet stuff Dan. It's so cool to see some analog fantasy art every once in a while. Great oils.
I'm only sligthely annoyed by the fact that Overlord Saurfang is carrying his axe rather than holding it.
Tim the defender of earth came out really well, the fallen big ben and the scales look 8) 8) 8)
July 15th, 2007, 06:54 AM
Awesom stuff Dan, as always :rendered:
The las one is my fav :teeth:
July 15th, 2007, 06:56 AM
it looks like you spent more time on the defender of earth, did you? fun stuff!
July 15th, 2007, 08:15 AM
SWEEEET! awesome colors and very unique designs.
This is gonna hurt..If I may..I do have one crit tough!
Its like the girl isnt standing in the orb,but its like she's hanging in front of it.Becaus the background(roks) are blue tinted by the orb's color, but the girl isnt.
BUT! except for this...very sweet! :D
July 15th, 2007, 10:59 AM
I really enjoy your imagination. And the drama is portrayed so clearly. Nice work all the way around!
July 15th, 2007, 12:59 PM
lookin pretty sexy man, i really love the arcane teachings one
July 15th, 2007, 02:17 PM
You've done it again sir.
July 15th, 2007, 03:43 PM
great stuff, and i would have to disagree with Wixxi's "crit". I think the piece is fantastic and the orb's edge being in the foreground in front of the figure is enough to show that she is in or causing the orb to expand out of her.
keep it up, always one of my favorites
July 16th, 2007, 11:36 AM
I POSTED AN IMAGE PREMATURELY. APPARENTLY IT WAS STILL UNDER N.D.A.
I HAVE EDITED THE THREAD. PLEASE BE COURTEOUS AND DO NOT SHARE THE IMAGE IF YOU HAPPENED TO DOWNLOAD IT.
July 16th, 2007, 01:47 PM
i love the godzilla one, very slick.
nice to see the card ones too- they look much looser or maybe it's just that they're smaller in scale.
July 16th, 2007, 02:51 PM
Really great stuff as usual, Dan. Wall of Fire just looks plain cool for a magic card. And some cool ideas in, "The painting that shall not be named".
July 16th, 2007, 06:13 PM
hey Dan! I thought I would reply and brag a bit to the others that I have already gotten a chance to see your generous in action already (we share emails on current projects). it's a bit like name dropping but I'm more than capable of that and this slightly more subtler form.
these look great and I refer back to your paint methods and sensibilities often in my own work. helps me understand color and lighting better.
July 16th, 2007, 06:32 PM
Great to see new work from you. I missed the errant post! Now I can't wait to see it. Ah well. Was it for UD? Love the girl in the dome of energy. One of the nicest compliments that I have received is that my work reminded someone of yours. If only it were true. Great work Dan, I'll keep my eye out for the other image when it goes public.

July 23rd, 2007, 10:52 PM
really like "Poison Sleep" - definitely far and above the others...for me at least:)
July 23rd, 2007, 10:52 PM
That last one is serously one of my favorite pics. I also love the imaginary friend pic you did for last man standing. You always make great art.
July 24th, 2007, 02:50 AM
Beautiful paintings. Travesty that this thread only has 4 stars. :nohope:
That last one is just phenomenal, especially.
July 24th, 2007, 03:44 AM
I checked this in your gallery the other night, it really turned out beautiful. I see you left the stone work (or at least I think you did?) the way it was and I really like it now that I see it finished and reduced, it's like the end of an oval instead of a circle. I think it makes the composition even stronger.
I won't be at all surprised if this one doesn't come back home with you after comicon (don't worry, I'm knocking on wood right now ;))
July 24th, 2007, 04:46 AM
Oh Dan, You have that good old qualities that most of us lost due to these phuckin wacoms. Good things take time.
And I see you making good things, mate.
Thanks for inspiration.
July 24th, 2007, 05:05 AM
the update is amazing - miss you !
July 24th, 2007, 05:45 AM
that "Poison Sleep" illo is one huge step higher than the WotC pieces. The composition is superb. Very inspiring.
July 24th, 2007, 06:57 AM
LOVE the skin tones....a lot.
and I like the ground design, it's simple, it doesn't overpower the figures, yet there's real beauty in the way you've painted it. nice texture
July 24th, 2007, 07:10 AM
aw man, I love the Poison Sleep painting, its beautiful!
You are the Dogs balls Dan !!! :)
July 24th, 2007, 07:54 AM
Beautiful work Sir!! Nicely done! :)
July 24th, 2007, 10:06 AM
DAN!!! that update is awesome, definately oone of my faves. I love the shapes that going on, especially in the upper figure. I wish I could be at the con, but my funds are shot at the moment. Best of luck to you and the gang -
July 24th, 2007, 10:21 AM
the update is hot. i mean really hot. but cold. haha. you really captured the feeling of death or deep sleep here. great pallette, ambitious yet natural poses. i tip my hat to your superiority once more, good sir ;)

Oooh to have your work on a mass produced product for all the little chillens to enjoy. Fab-bo!
One day...one day.
July 25th, 2007, 09:22 PM
That last one is fantastic Dan. I'm really a huge fan of your work but with that last one you really out did yourself. You should do some prints of it.
July 25th, 2007, 11:17 PM
The last image is super!!!
July 26th, 2007, 12:03 AM
I got to see this in person today. It is glorious. Nice work Dan!
July 26th, 2007, 12:17 AM
You had me at Heya, my aerodynamic brother. I hope you won't mind if I save all of these and tell everyone in my life that knows jack shit about art that I did them. :D
Poison Sleep is just, wow.
July 26th, 2007, 01:59 PM
woo, yeah, Poison Sleep is a homerun!
Tim, Defender of the Earth is also excellent. too bad you couldn't post those cards sooner, but sitting next to the newer pieces they are really showing how far you've come. Robin's right, Honor Guard is something like 18 months old?
July 26th, 2007, 08:05 PM
newest one's my fav, tim's ok aswell, but the others are abit too cliché for my taste...too bad you can't show that other bookcover yet.
July 27th, 2007, 04:12 AM
The one with the dead/slumbering lady on the snowy tiles is wonderful... lovely.
July 27th, 2007, 05:41 AM
I really dig that Poison Sleep piccie. Cheers Dan.
Nom the puppet
July 27th, 2007, 05:47 AM

July 29th, 2007, 11:22 AM

Show us more Dan :p another step by step would be amazing :>
Much Love and respect!
July 30th, 2007, 05:06 AM
It was totally excellent meeting yourself, Foster, and the rest of the crew. Your guys' booth was bar none my favorite. I wanted to stop by again to talk some actual painting stuffs, and drop off a card, but I missed you guys. Maybe next year!
July 31st, 2007, 01:18 AM
Wow. Just....wow. A word of warning: I'm going to be a raving fangirl at Conglomeration. Okay, raving fanwoman. I can't wait to see some of your paintings in person...*dabs drool*
July 31st, 2007, 02:44 AM
Wow, the last one, poision sleep is just great (I feel like a parrot here). Very successful on all levels if you ask me. My new desktop background.
July 31st, 2007, 10:17 PM
Beautiful pics, DS... and yes, you've heard it before, but "Poison Sleep" is quite stunning
Love to see more of this coolness -- post, post, post! :teeth:
July 31st, 2007, 11:25 PM
very nice colors and clean style. The designs are classic.
I like the last image most, it has a great atmosphere and colors, very nice details. I just think her navel looks a bit strange. There could be a darker shadow around her neck om the left side between the hair and her shoulder.
Looking at the sleeping girls hand, the one that hold the leaves i see a different shadow direction then the other girls hand cast on her forehead.
The other images are great too. I personally don't like the designs much, but i understand that they probably have to be like this.
Some proportions/perspectives are a bit off here and there but nothing really serious. Maybe some more attention to the material properties, such as metal, wood, leather... you paint them in a rather very classic illustration style.

this update was awesome!!
post more Mr. DS
August 2nd, 2007, 12:52 AM
You are a magically talented guy! I love how you can capture-the-moment in your work. I like the lighting in the first image, and the epic glowy effects in "Wall of Fire".
I'm really loving the "Poison Sleep" picture; the perspective is just so well done. I think it shows through that this is a more personal piece; as spectacular as they all are, this one has a kind of feel that seperates it from the other pictures in the post (maybe because it lacks exploding things and fearsomely buff men... just kidding ;) ). I like the winter and spring idea, it just works wonderfully here. And the hair in the detail shot-- its the kind of stuff you see in shampoo commercials! Just beautiful!
Anyway, I hope things went more than well for you at comic-con!
Keep us updated :)
August 2nd, 2007, 01:28 PM
Dan, just want to say this is incredible work as always. I love Honor Guard, the composition really makes it my favorite of the bunch.
You came to Yuko's class that one time in january for the critique/demo--that was hands down the greatest 2 hours I had at art school!
August 2nd, 2007, 07:07 PM
keep doing you man,
thanks for sharing :)
August 2nd, 2007, 07:27 PM
Beautiful work on this last painting Dan.
It's even better in person, always is ey! :)
August 3rd, 2007, 08:00 PM
maan, i can't get over that last one.
August 4th, 2007, 10:43 AM
THe way you paint the faces leave me breathless.
August 4th, 2007, 11:27 AM
Damn, Dan... That "Poison Sleep" painting is fantastic. The hands, the faces, the colors... Just gorgeous. It looks more inspired than your D&D stuff, your personal interest shows. Nice work, man.
August 4th, 2007, 03:13 PM
love your work.
its really inspiring knowing that you work traditionally, and don't rely so much on digital.
August 4th, 2007, 03:43 PM
Dan, I'm glad I had the chance to see that new painting last week. A lot of grace in it. Just like you. ;) Meeting you after all that time hidden behind my screen was a blast.
August 4th, 2007, 04:18 PM
The Honor Guard really hit the spot. Though it makes me feel if he had that many scars on his head, I would get a helmet.
