Hi guys, I'm 19 and currently taking classes at Temple University but I hope to transfer to University of the Arts in Philadelphia. I really want to practice more and I think this thread will help keep me motivated as well as help me progress.

I go to a life drawing class once a week, which is most of what i have here, and I've been trying understand gesture and how to draw through the figure more. These drawings range from 5 min to 20 min.

Some really great lifedrawing. You gave a lot of life to some bland poses. I always found lifedrawing really liberating and endlessly beneficial to my sence of composition and spacial design.

Just for the sake of it, when presenting your work online it might be an idea to consider the drawing as it is on the page, rather than just the drawing. Maybe not crop the image too much and lose the original composition. Though it's just my personal taste losing the tops of heads and feet can really take away from a piece.

It's good that you don't care about the general aspect of your drawings, keep them loose..all you have to worry about is to launch yourself with some more of those brave lines ahead. The rest will come with great practice.

Cheers!

Hey Howie,

Looking at your studies and see alot of analyses in your drawings.
Good construction and symmetry (did I spell that right?) and I can see that proportions will follow soon as you gain experience. Nice block ins with the manakin concept.
Keep going!

Hey Howie,

Thanks for looking at my sketchbook and leaving some feedback--not too many people bother leaving comments.

I'm just going to list a couple of ideas here for you to think about with your figure drawing--5-20min stuff, if i remember right.

1) you've done a good job with the approach you have. you now draw through the figure like the hamstrings and back of the legs here. http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/4360/fig32el7.png you also do a decent job looking for rhythmical ways to interconnect limbs and torso, etc. Now that you've experienced drawing around, and drawing through, you should try to combine the two and draw linearly with the idea of correctly identifying overlapping forms. this can be tricky. not every overlapped form needs a line to show it, sometimes it's better to not use a line and suggest it with tone. a good generic example would be the biceps muscle--if you draw the outline of the whole thing, it looks like a balloon floating in space.

2) look at chromosome's work. you draw very "roundly." start pushing yourself the other way and use only straight lines. this will force you to learn other kinds of relationships between forms and to capture only the most important aspects of curves.

3) i don't know what lighting arrangement you have during life drawing, but start doing very simple tonal stuff. by simple, i mean 2-tones. one light, one shadow. use your line work (softly or with broken-line) to show the core shadows and the turning of the planes. use your drawing-through knowledge to get shadows to lie on top of the form correctly. Just be sure you use some middle-ish tones for these. too dark in the shadows will be too hard to control at first. leave space in your tonal range darker than your shadows so you can still see your line work. maybe experiment with pen hatching too. Again, see chromosome's work.

4) if you want to improve your composition, treat the figure like you do your environment studies. only draw inside of a box. learn to make the figure placement interesting. avoid repeating generic proportions in how you divide the picture frame. (there's a decent page or two of this in my sketchbook).

Anyway, this is all unsolicited advice, i know, but think about some of these things and change up your game a little. I think it will help you progress more rapidly and help push you through a few plateaus that might be coming up.

keep drawing.
every
day

@ccsears- Thank you very much. I really appreciate the advice. These are the kind of comments i was hoping to get out of this thread. With these sketches i tried to keep them more linear and clean but i still feel i have to put some loose sketchy lines down first just so i know where the clean lines go. Its hard for me to put down a confident clean line right off the bat. I made one attempt at a 2 tone sketch but I'm definitely going to try and do more. Anyway thanks again.

@Metal-Mike- Thanks for the link. I missed this week but ill try and summit for the next week.

These are some poses using Loomis's stick figure manikin guy. Some are from my head and others are from photo reference. Just trying too focus on weight, balance, and proportions.

Hello:) Great figure drawings! I really like your use of line. Very clean.
Definitely try using more tone on your figures. When you draw features and muscles try to just draw the shadow shape they create, instead of outlining the whole thing. You can see what I mean in my lifedrawings. Also, a good exercise is to draw only the shadow shapes of the figure (or any subject for that matter...). If done correctly, the eye will just imagine the missing contours. This'll give you a better understanding of shadows, and thus, it will improve your rendering.

I hope some of this helps:) Keep having fun now:)

Thanks for the visit at my sketchbook! I like your sketchbook.
Some of the croquies are pretty alive.
It's good that you give a lot of effort into figure drawings.
Study also parts of the body - hands, bones, muscles, head...
you will put them easier together when you will understand
them better.

Good luck,

Matej

hello there!
Your comment in my SB was very appreciated so I'm returning the favor :)
Your life drawings are really looking great, so much life and movement! the enviros are really good too, those from post#4 and #7.
That last chow is nice too. I like the strokes you did to render the tree, but you worked a little less on the feet, one is flat ;) the lighting looks good, maybe more shadows on the right side of the character could be added (I saw from his shadow that the light source was on the left)
Sorry if I don't have nothing very helpful to say except keep going that way, you can only progress :)

Hey!
The figure studies from life drawings class are really coming along nicely. You will see it will reflect on your future drawings, huge help. I wish we did figure life drawings in school....
Also nice work on digital works, such as that skull.

I got an impression your figure proportions are kinda weird, the legs seem too long on some.

Keep up the good work! :)

hey howie, sweet sketchbook you have here. i see tons of hard work and lots of life in your drawings.

i came across your thread after doing a search for people who lived in the Philadelphia area. a couple friends and i are trying revitalize the local philadelphia sketchgroup that was originaly formed here on conceptart.org.
a few of our regular members have recently moved away so we are trying to get some new people involved.
we meet one night a week in a center city coffee shop. if you are interested send me a pm or drop a line in my sketchbook. we would love to have you

Hey Howie, thanks for dropping by my book - sorry it took me so long to get back to you :) Its good to see so much life drawing! I see a lot of proportional issues - make sure you're measuring always and looking for new ways to check your accuracy - use negative space and measure angles as well. Also i'd like to see you study some of the anatomy beneath the skin - knowledge of bone and muscle structure will greatly help you place forms correctly. Keep up the good work!

I have finally taken pictures of the paintings from my into to painting class...

Here is some of the stuff done in the very beginning of the semester. We were only allowed to use a palette knife and black and white paint.

I'm sorry i haven't posted in forever, I'll try and make a stronger effort to post more often

Anyway here is a charcoal drawing from my drawing 2 class
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v676/Internalcow/fig35.png
I worked on it for about an hour i think, I'm pretty happy with it but it probably would have benefited from some more time

I've also gone back to Loomis' and Bridgman's books to study the human head.

I have a lot more in my notebooks for school but they're all on lined paper, i should carry a sketchbook around so I don't have to resort to lined notebook paper.

And finally here are some environments done in photoshop

Here are two more charcoal drawings done this week from my drawing class... Next week we start using pastels which should make things a little more interesting.

Nice figure studies. I like how they retain their fullness and volume even without shading.

The third painting is really great, dude. Alot of depth and "air" to it.
The first has some major proportion issues, the head and the whole upper body seems way too big.

this is kinda of old, but it was a assignment for my intro to computer imaging class. We had to start off with a digital drawing and then manipulate it 6 different times using photoshop and illustrator

I like the variety of stuff you're doing, and that armor dude is pretty cool. I notice in a lot of your drawings you're cutting off the backs of people's heads. There's a lot of volume behind the ear - pay attention to it! Keep up the good work.

I have a question about form/ structure. When i approach a 2d or 3d reference i always break it down into 2 dimensional shapes and simply try and copy the shapes as accurately as possible. I wish i didn't learn to draw/ paint only this way but its what I've been taught in school so far, but next year I'm transferring to a new school and I know they teach things more in terms of the 3 dimensional aspects of the reference.

So my question is, how do i practice my understanding of the 3 dimensional qualities of my references? Is the only way to understand the 3d aspects of the figure through anatomy diagrams, or can photos and master studies provide the information i need also?

I have done several studies from Loomis and Bridgman, as you can see throughout this thread, but i don't really apply this knowledge when I'm using a reference.

Thatīs probably not a good idea i think. :)
Bridgman is great, for showing the boxtype volume thingy.
Thinking of the head, ribcage, pelvis as boxes, and learning where the corners are, and how to tilt them in perspective and so on.
Iīd recomend alot of bridgman studies, and that you try to think of volume as well as shapes when you do studies.
You should check out Vilppu as well, heīs awesome at that stuff.
Hope this helps in any way.
Oh, and the Sargent studies looks kick-ass. :)
Seeya around man!

thanks for the feedback guys, I've been looking at Hogarth's book again and it's amazing how much more I learn even after reading through it already. I'll try and scan some of those figure studies in for next time. I'll probably move back to Bridgman again though because he simplifies the forms more than Hogarth.

for now here are two more environments, I'm trying to include more man made stuff since all my environments are very organic looking

Hey Howie, thanks for commenting in my sketchbook :)

I like that monochromatic jungle painting, and the structure in the same post. Love the sharp edges, how did you get them so sharp? Did you use polygonal lasso tool and sharpen filter, or is it just brush magic?

Anyway, like the use of colour, but your last portrait really needs more contrast (and eyes:P)

Hey Howie,

I agree with the other posters. You got some really neat uses of colors and those environments are cool. Really push those values more thoug in some spots. Keep at it and keep it coming:)

Howie! Your environments are looking good, you show a good grasp of atmospheric perspective and values, this is really good!

You still need to work on your anatomy and proportions though - but I'm sorry if you hate to hear it, believe me, i've heard it a thousand times, too. But you have good grasp of color and values, and that's actually the HARD stuff -- the drawing will come with practice. Good on ya!

Howie

Thanks for the replies

@zelda_geek: yea all I used was the lasso tool, it makes structural things a lot easier to draw
@Trashy: Thanks
@Nerahla: Thank you for your honesty, i definitly agree my anatomy needs work, i've gone back to studing Bridgman lately and when im not too lazy ill post some of those sketches up

anyway i took the advice and pumped up the values on the head, looks a lot better now
