hey, I will be showing at comic con with Dan Dos Santos this year, booth 5001. actually there will be a bunch of us showing together under that booth number Donato Giancola, Stephan Martiniere, Dan Dos Santos, Rebecca Guay, Cathy and Arnie Fenner of spectrum (as in the editors of spectrum the book of contemporary fantastic art) and yours truely. I'm freakin out! stresses of work and worries about making everything just so have me bouncin around like a three year old that drinks coffee with his cookies. I hope by the time the show comes around I will be calm cool and collected and will get a chance to see and talk with who ever comes by.
here are three covers done recently. the dragon one and the kid underwater piece were started with oils but finished up in the computer, the dreadful skin piece was just all digital.
hope you like.

gulp. awesome! really love the first one. love the way you handled the scales.
are you going to selling any of these as prints at Con?

Wow, really like that first one. I love seeing "caught in the act" moments of a wholly imagined world. That's what I love about Frazetta's action so much. You feel you're stealing a glimpse into another world and everybody in it is too busy to care and nobody is striking a pose for the camera! Makes it more believable some how.
Nice work and good luck!

Hi Jason, I think I will be able to get some prints of these made but as I said, I'm freakin out, just trying to get work done and art ready to frame and sell.
Kev, the first time I saw your thread I immediately went to find your web site as I new a thread would not be able to hold enough art to satisfy my new found need. But alas, you have no site! I want more! you have in fact been very good about posting but it is still not enough for me. Glad you checked in on this thread and even more so thst you liked the work.
Ryan, ha! good! glad you like them. I have not as of yet taken process shots of me oil painting but there are some shots of me painting a demo when visiting Ringling a while ago. Go to
http://web.mac.com/georgepratt/iWeb/George%20Pratt%20Artblog/Artblog/A28307BE-A1CC-4EBC-B0A9-22A39A8E826B.html
it's posted on George Pratt's blog site, which by the way is worth visiting just for all of the cool info, history and new art by Mr. Pratt himself.
Mortem, thank you.
Thanos5, I understand what you are saying but I also have to balance these feelings with growth and change. But that is not to say that I may not revisit that older style with a new perspective.
Stalsby, and color is so very hard for me to deal with, thanks!
Jrr, ah, you know me. Sporadic, a bit selfish, and yet still eager to please.
Gringoloc, at one point I would have loved to to do the Fables covers, but now to have to follow James Jean... Well I would avoid it like the plague, he has rocked that series so hard.
Artguff, thanks for picking up the book and thanks for stopping in on the thread!
Kenji, thanks! too bad you will not be at San Diego but you will save allot of money. I tend to buy toys, all kinds of toys. Lots of toys I just don't need.
Ghostofmacbeth, sad to miss you this year my friend.
Joshua, I will be keeping an eye out for you big smiling face.
Bomba, love muffin! thin sexy man of excellent artistic talents! looking forward to seeing you soon.

Your work is always an inspiration to me Jon. Your r/evolution book was one of my best buys of the year. Awesome composition as always. I was thinking what was so dreadful about the skin you painted.:) I'll read the work titles more carefully. Please post more.

Great stuff man, I love the oil demo, and that top one is among your best. My only critique is that you need to post more! Have fun in San Diego.

Hey Jon! Good to see you posting some work again! I'm really really liking the first two pictures, but they're all great, as always :p Y'know I showed my copy of R/evolutions with some interns at my studio and they just instantly fell in love with your work..so now I can't get it back from them because they're looking through it every damn day! :p
Anyways, please please please bring some prints with you this year. I'm not sure if you did last year, but I promise you I'll be buying some off you this year :] It'll be great seeing you again!

Hey Jon, awesome work!! I really enjoy how you play with the graphic masses in the recent pieces. Everything is off kilter, at least in the first 2 and it gives it so much energy. It's cool that you posted up the whaler guy from the demo at Ringling. Meeting you there was a great experience and inspiration. Having you look at my work was a highlight of the year hahaha. Good luck with the 'con.

Really loving your approach to composing - even though your rendering is naturalistic, your composing seems to embrace the flatness of the canvas, it's almost like seeing something better than the best comic ever coming to life.
very inspiring, thanks for sharing!
cheers!

great stuff jon!
the first one is my fave.
the wolf one reminds me of the creature from "Lady in the Water". ;)
you're an inspiration, man.
i also think you don't post enough, but i'm guessing staying busy can do that.
i saw the cover you did for "Dark Harvest" on irene's blog and really loved that one- more than the ones here.
anyways, i'd love to pick your brain sometime if the opportunity arose.
too bad i can't make it to comic con.

Beautiful. You manage to establish a atmosphere that is both personal and otherworldy. I don't get it! But i love it, particularly blended paint quality you get from digital work. Does it help for you to start in oils first? Do you retain a rougher painted quality even after finishing in digital?

Still love, love, love that wolf piece, Jon. Sooo very great.
Everyone - Jon graciously let me post some sketches for a cover he did for us.

Hey Jon, looks like this time - again - I will not make it to the convention... wanted badly... can't.
Wish you all the best with the sleep deprived event and the sell. Glorious work anyway, I am not worried, you'll knock them off their socks over there no doubt.
I hope I'll find a way of getting my ass down to San Diego next year to drop by and take you for a beer or whatever fuel your kind of engine needs to continue running full throttle.
God speed

Thanks for all the replies. San Diego was a blast, first time I had a booth space on the floor. Dan Dos Santos and I shared the space and it worked out quite well I must say that Dan is one smart, talented guy. his work looks great on line but seen in person... well it just blew me away!
I saw lots of CA people and enjoyed seeing them around the booth. made me feel all warm and comfy to have your guys around. On that note how did you all do showing your work around and meeting new people? love to hear about it.
anyway I need to bring my head down from the clouds and put it back to work.

You are so inspiring. And amazing. Thanks for just... being.. so inspiring!
I love the motion in your work. And the character and energy that makes every figure feel so alive. And that surreal quality to your work that makes me baffled and always leaves in wonder.
It's been a long while but I haven't forgotten meeting you at comic-con. That too was incredible and I think about it all the time as a source of inspiration. I am quite a wimp for not contacting and thanking you sooner, but anyway... I hope you are doing well! Keep being amazing in every possible way!
