For comics, my favorite artist is Joe Madureira. Just naturally talented, being able to draw incredible works in his mid teens.
For fantasy/manga, my favorite artist is Svetlana Chmakova

I always love Mucha's works, so he's my most favourite artist. I adore his art nouveau style. ^^

For comics, I will always be an accolyte of Jim Lee.
For fantasy, Julie Bell has my kudos.
For Impressionism, Pierre Renoir has top knocks.
For Pre-Raphaelites, Herbert James Draper.
For French Acedemic, Bouguereau
For landscape painting, Frederic Edwin Church and Thomas Cole
For portraiture, John Singer Sargent.

Or are you asking solely about modern artists?

I'm regarding this as a "classical artist" question. And here, my point is fairly clear:

James Gurney. My mother bought me "Dinotopia" when I was about six, and since then, it left an impression on me. Worlds can be created.

EDIT: The best picture I could find. Printed in the book, it looks absolutely astonishing. The fine detail on the roofstops... My absolute favourite painting by Gurney.

well, right now Sam Weber (http://www.sampaints.com/) has been inspiring me, but of all time it would have to be jean leon gerome. i just cannot imagine myself right now without his paintings in mind.

This guy is my new favorite. Andrew James Jones. He weirds me out and cracks me up at the same time. It takes bravery to be weird. I thought I was brave until I saw this guy's stuff.

I'm totally digging on Audrey Kawasaki right now. I think her work is just brillant. Oh and James Jean, his color palette...sigh. It's fantastic.
