Here is a piece set on a Mars type planet. The hole in the ground is not supposed to be a traditional crater but more of a giant sand pit thing. The client had specific direction on this.
Tear it to pieces ;)

Thanks

Those are some really pretty colours. Also, I'm impressed that I can really feel the sand in my eyes. That's very well done. It's pretty.

I'm enjoying the design and feel of the planes.

the background in my opinion needs more definition in certain areas. such as the clouds and horizon. the rock formation on the left is perfect, the one on the right is too vague between the sky and rock. The horizon at that altitude should be somewhat curved upward(while it does help give the landscape weight looking at it directly, there seems to be something off. and if you look outside there is a gradation of lighter dirtier color in the sky near the horizon, especially for a desert.

the central land feature is that a crater or a shaft? a little contrast in the base of the crater or at the closer lip of the hole would help define it.
the colors and composition are good and i like this piece, 'What's down there?'

(ah i see, i forgot to read your comment again. then i would suggest lightening up the lighted part in the hole. this will make it appear less like a deep hole and more shallow. next is it like a sand spider trap or is it like a sink hole. a spider trap is less rounded at the bottom, almost like the top half of a hourglass.

I think you need to darken up your hole to give it more depth. Great piece, I like the shuttles.
