A siren is a mythological character which takes the form of a beautiful woman and lures sailors to their deaths on the rocks where she sits using her hypnotic singing. The legend was that one captain (can't remember his name) had all his crewmen plug their ears with candle wax and tie him to the mast of the boat. That way none of them would be effected by the siren since they couldn't hear her song and once they were out of hearing range he could tell them to remove the ear plugs. When the siren saw the ship pass by her and not follow her music, thus escaping death on the rocks, she commited suicide. I think it was because she thought she had lost her powers, not sure though. Hope that helps

Originally the sirens are figures in the "Illias" from Homer. The "sailor" has been Odysseus (Ulysses in America?).
Hereīs my approach, it was so hot today (about 100° F) that I didnīt have the nerve to sit the whole time before the Comp.
I first thought about a classical version but somehow I was always thinking about the Coens brothersī "O brother where art thou?", so I decided to do a more modern siren. Unfortunately with some anatomical issues in the shoulder area.

Here's my contribution, I thought I would give this sketch group a try for once. I spent an hour on the image, the final is 1500 pixels tall.
My main critique about the above work is only that most of them are not sirens(dwell near rocks and like to lure hapless sailors down to davy jones locker..), but harpies (the winged critters).

This sucks, i'm taking way too much time and you're not even going to be able to tell. ;)
I started off with this semi-abstract lightouse metaphor, and it's turned into something i should probably post on Shane Glines' forum.
and maybe i should stop doing these in Open Canvas.
here's a really rough WIP as a placeholder.

Wow! <looks at all the purdy colors from the other pics> Some good posts here. I wish I had an ounce of color sense, but I don't, so heres my lineart. I'm glad this changed to a 24hr thing, gives me time to draw something I'm not too afraid to post :D This took a little over couple hrs and a half (I know, I am slow :( ) My shading isn't the best, but I tried. :p
I was going for a "sad" siren look. It must suck to be a beautiful sea nympth type thing with a killer voice (pun intended) only to have all of your suitors die trying to get to you. And yes, my siren is basically a mermaid, but I thought the chicks with wings were harpys. Oh well, I go hide now....
