Very nice photos. :) I particularly like your compositions. For a crit, I think you can get some more contrast out of your work. By the way, "melburn.jpg" is awesome! :)

hey there! thanks alot for the feedback.my names kevin by the way:) .. i live in melbourne, australia. i just came across this site by chance and decided it would be a gud idea to join up.that melburn.jpg is a fairly striking photo. i was pleased with that one, i used a long exposure and the sunset, along with the reflections just gave it this beautiful purple haze to it...i dont really use photoshop very often, i try to keep my images as close to what they where originally as possible. also, thanks for reminding me, they are now numbered :)

Hey mate, you've got some good stuff. #10 is excellent, and the west gate bridge is cool (although I think it's more because I love bridges, and that's a radtastic bridge). I do agree with Rose, more contrast and saturation would help a lot. Also, there will never be an original shot of the shot glass tower :P and the surf ones look reeeeeeally cold but not that interesting, you need to get amongst it to awesome surf photos (or get a massive lens).
Keep going, always good to continue the australian invasion and I look forward to more of your stuff.

hey mate, cheers for the feedback :) much appreciated,.. yeh, #10 is actually from the local beach where i live.in regards the shot tower, lol, ye i know,.. theres only so many angles you cant get..a bit old, very true mate,.. i wud love to be able to afford a slr witha HUGe zoom, but until i can afford one, not much i can do:( ive been looking into investing in a water proof case for my cannon, as i surf quite alot.. itd b awesome to be able to capture sum of the barrels out in the line up at bells beach. so stay tuned, i might load sum up in the coming weeks. :)
once again, thanx alot for ure comment and lets keep the ozzy invasion strong..:confident

67 is pretty cool. :) I would probably crop off the two cut off parts near the top right hand corner. That way, if you draw a diagonal line from the top right corner, it'll be symmetric.

My most major point would be to avoid the sepia tone. It can look alright on some photos but over using it just looks tacky. I'm personally not a fan of the inverted colours pics either but that's just me.
One point is to make sure that your pictures are level, or if you're tilting them make it pronounced enough to look deliberate (Such as in that one of the beach you took).

hey mate, thanks for ure feedback. im quite a fan of sepia shots, so i admit,i am guilty of using it in excess.:confident .i know what u mean tho, perhaps it could come across as being tacky etc... yeh, the inverted colour pic was just experimental. i dont even have a copy of photoshop these days, so im stuck with the amazing filters and touch ups offered in microsoft paint. so i thought, why not invert the colours, lol.
as far as taking photos that are level, i agree with you to a point.in saying that, i dont have a traditional style as such, as i have never been shown how to take photographs by anyone else but myself,so angles etc, are all purely experimental at this stage. i quite like some shots that are subtly off centre. but once again, thanks alot for ure feedback, i shall certainly re-concider the whole 'sepia tone approach' that i suffer from.:bashful:

For me personally the photos have no real general focal point, and your sepia's lack contrast to really bring the image to life. For me 82 and 56 really caught my eye.

I'd have to agree. Sepia is great when it's used right, but a lot of the photos here would have worked just as well, if not better with out it. (109-112 to cite just one example). You also might want to try more duotones, in colors other then sepia. I find I get a very nice effect, particularly on night shots converting them to black and white, and then putting a cross-processing layer on top (if you haven't discovered photoshop cross processing, check this out http://www.photoshopsupport.com/tutorials/or/cross-processing.html
the effect used there has become a stand by of my digital darkroom).
As for inverted colors, stay the hell away from it. It screams armature who just got photoshop and is overwhelmed by it, but doesn't really know what to do with it. Just a complete waste of photoshop and the photo it's used on.

I'm of mixed feeling about this. I think subtly tilting an image, if it's the right image, can give add a certain emotion to it that you can't get any other way. Like anything else in a photographer's technique toolbox, it's all about knowing when it serves the image and when it hurts it.
Over all, very good work. You're tastes and technique are very smiler to my own, and many of your pictures stand out as memorable, accomplished images.
And I'm absolutely in love with 104, just amazing.

Hey mate,
You're showing some real improvement, 131, 133 and 149 especially. 152 also rates an honourable mention. The big thing I'd like to see is a bit of correction for tungsten, I'm not really a fan of the crazy orange colour cast you've got going on a fair few of these.
When you're buying your SLR, find a camera store with it on special and get a printed quote, then go to JB Hifi and get them to beat it. Once you've done that, take that quote back to the camera store (I recommend Teds, but I'm biased due to being friends with everyone in my closest store) and get them to match that price. This way you get a rad discount, and you don't have to cop shit from the surly JB staff and most importantly if something goes wrong the staff will actually know what to do about it. This saved me about $400 on my 40D, so I'm sure this way works.
Looking forward to more from you mate.

Overall, just watch out for your overexposure when you have strong light sources in the image.

as far as overexposure,. im in the process of enrolling for a photography and development full time course. this week i am buying my SLR and equipment.i have the intention of learning as much as i can, because at the moment, my skills and knowledge of photography etc, are very very basic. i will be taking the plunge and leaving my day job:er: , to hopefully expand my knowledge and skills in photography. at the moment i set up my own little stall on the weekends at trade shows and markets to sell my work, both photography and air brushing pieces. hopefully it can lead to a new lifestyle for me... and take me to new places:rendered: all in time, life is too short to be left wondering.

I love the tones in #163. Minor cropping suggestion: crop off the distracting background elements near the top (light shapes and black negative space) and the reddish area (including the line) on the right side and you're golden. :)
I like the epic look of #173-176. I'm wondering if you could make the shadows darker in PS?

Man you seem to have nice surf brakes.
About the beach photos:
I'd like to see the ocean pics in color and with greater contrast especially at the dark end. When you get your new camera, you might want to buy a (circular-) polarizer to use with a lens. The filter will make the blue sky a bit darker and more blue and it also removes light reflections from the surface of the water, windows etc.. The bottom line is that the images will look a lot crisper even if you don't retouch them. This was just an advise.. Btw. I bought my polarizer just yesterday.
And post more of those photos of the waves. Thanks.
ReefFrog
November 6th, 2007, 07:48 AM
Oh yeah... Sometimes you really have to retouch the photos. I do that a lot because of the many low quality photos I have taken.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v683/ReefFrog/VNSS0f78.jpg
Just to show how it's done:
First I played around with the levels so that I got the contrast to stand out a bit more. Then I roughly colored the photo and after that I put the saturation a bit down. At this point the colors were a bit too cold (blue) so I applied a warming filter to it (all done in photoshop). And last things I did were that I used burn and dodge tools to add still more clarity on the photo.
When you have a colored photo it's easy to transform into black and white using the channel mixer or whatever it's called. You can control the amount of red, green blue magenta etc. but in bw. Kinda hard to explain..
Edit: Oh yeah! I also increased the sharpness in the photo. This should always be the last procedure (only when needed).
I can post a step by step guide of one of your photos if you don't mind.

reefFrog- thanks heaps for the feeback!! i really appreciate comments like this...we get some pretty decent swell down here in victoria,australia.. i will post up a few more pics today just for you :) also,i will definatly look into the circular polarizer. that photo that you retouched into colour looks so much better than mine in black and white.. much more dramatic and it really brings out the power of the ocean (well thats the feeling im getting). please feel free to post a step by step guide, as i would love to try it myself..
once again, thanks alot for the feedback mate!

agreed with Mr Mu on 172, the scale and space are good. Also the subtlety of color doesn't hurt, either. There's something great about that snail, its so...photogenic!

i have never really done set-up photography before (or whatever you call it)... so i thought i would give it a go.... id like to see what you guys think.. as this is the first time i have really tryed..well, i bought this mask from indonesia and the wall light is a japanese style paper light. i thought it would be a nice effect if i also added my incense burner to the pic and let the smoke drift up onto the mask. do you think i should have focused in on the incense bottle, rather than the mask?

186 - underpass below Flinders St Station? I wanted to do some stuff there, but my friends were moving to fast through it.
188 is EXCELLENT, rad stuff.
For street stuff, a small camera is usually a better option than an SLR just for the hideability of it. You'll find that most pro street photographers still use rangefinder cameras because they're so small, quiet and unobtrusive.

hey klips.. thanks alot mate!
186- yep, u r on the money with that guess. its a great place for photos..
188- thanks heaps .. i really like that shot also! and the funny thing is, i was actually walking at the time i shot it!
in response to the street stuff.. i totally agree with you.. my small little camera is certainly a lot more discrete than a big SLR pointing at someone.. *thats interesting about street photographers using rangefinders etc.*
..over the next few weeks, i will be concentrating my attention to street and hopefully come up with a few memorable images like 188.
oh yer, ps- im buying a cannon 4ood or a nikon d40x. atm, im leaning towards the nikon,, ive heard the lenses are cheaper and also the fact that it uses SD cards instead of FLASH, is apprealing to me, as i have about 20 gig worth of SD cards already... both the cameras are very similar from what i have read/seen. so what do you think?

liking that kite, good sense of space in that one. About rangefinders, another big reason for their popularity is the fact that rangefinders are generally more quiet than SLRs (film or digital). For example, the DigitalRebel is not much bigger than the rangefinder I use (my Nikon film SLR is actually smaller than my rangefinder!) but the SLRs are both much louder. If you're taking a pic of someone from 5 feet away believe me, they will hear an SLR shutter. But really it doesn't matter. If you want to take someone's picture, you take their picture. There are people out there that do street photos with medium format cameras for crying out loud! (Those TLRs are actually pretty discreet since you can keep the camera at hip level and not even look at the person directly when you're focusing!)

today i finally picked up my DSLR!!! i love it!!! its a pentax 100D super with a 15-50 and a 55-400 lense kit..
i also bought a nice velbon sherpa 250R tripod and a remote for the shutter (long exposures)..
overall, im so impressed with it.absolutely stoked! i have an old fisheye lense that i used to use with my old pentax, so i will experiment with that on the weekend:) . it is such an upgrade from my cannon powershot a530 mini digi.. already i have realised how restricted i have been the last 2 years without having the manual settings of a decent DSLR..

On your black and white ones, make sure you get enough contrast. The first cat and the alleyway both have enough, the last flower has very very little.

yermate.. i went with the pentax.. 2 reasons- 1.. it seemed like a great deal with the amount of features it has for the money 2... i have a few sigma lenses and also a fisheye that a mate sold me for next to nothing..( i just havto fit a new clutch for him and change the rear differential , lol) .. so im stoked with the pentax! as far as the 50mm f/1.4 .. i will def have a look then mate, cheers! and as regards the b&w images.. yer the last photo isnt too good is it.. hmm, i just thought it looked a bit different than ure average boring flower shot.. but obviously not ,lol

Nice work, you have many pics here that I like! The composition of some of your photos could be improved, but it varies, try to think more about the geometry of the image.
A13 has very vivid colours and is very nice. Light is great too.
A17 has a nice mood to it, maybe you could brighten it up to give it some more contrast.
The last black and white is nice too aswell as some of the subway pics.
Congrats on the SRL, it will open a lot of possibilities.

-P has a nice composition.
-Awesome job in getting the tones in U.
-Really nice contrast in A7 and A8. Would probably crop out a bit of the sky to strengthen the compositions somewhat.
-A9, A10, A16 and A18 are golden. :)
-I like A14 as well, may be a bit overexposed in the sun area though.
-I love A17, maybe brighten the highlights a bit?
-Nice composition in the second one from the Arthur's Seat set.

well i just took these pictures after dinner. i received my pentax flash in the mail this evening so im testing it out and trying to see what effects i can acheive..:Dsome of them are quite odd and i am not really sure what sort of style i am going for lately.. im all over the joint!! hah! these shots are certainly not my best, but i dunno, im in a weird mood tonight and i feel like taking weird photos. also, is it just me, or can i see a guy with arms and a face looking up at me in the flower shot??? or is that just my waky mind..i find that image a bit disturbing.....??? almost as tho i am intruding in his space and he isnt happy about it.....

I like the green moody one with the light.
I think the recent one with the bird would be nice if the bird was a bit sharper.
