This might have been a topic already I don't know. But who is your favorite artist, and for what reasons?
Mine is Howard Pyle, because of the tremendous storytelling of his artwork. His compositions are incredible.

My single favourite artist?
... there are too many...
But if I really have to name just one it's one of the greatest concept artists I know... Leonardo da Vinci.
:D
A similar thread has been discussing this before indeed, check it out here (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4171&highlight=favorite+artists)

Chris Metzen, and Samwise [Insert last name 'cause I forgot]
Why? Amazingly creative concept artists that have influenced me so much over the years.
They do most of the concept art you see for Blizzard.

Kath Kollwitz.
I was blown away when I first saw her work in person. Her work is so powerful emotionally and yet so simple. I was really touched by her images and it had left a really strong impression on me.
other close choices are Norman Rockwell, Dega, Alphonse Mucha, and Sargent.

I agree with Pencil Soldier, I have been in love with Metzen's and Samwise's art for years (and the games too!).
Fantasy-wise John Howe is my favorite.
Kathe Kollwitz was also very interesting, quite powerful artworks.

I love Käthe Kollwitz, too. That's actually the correct spelling. Her name pronounces similar to "Katie". There are quite good websites to be found here: http://www.kollwitz.de/bestell.htm and here: http://www.kaethe-kollwitz.de/

For me It would Be definitely Salvador Dali for his Imagination and Composiitons...
FrankFrazetta for his Themes and Mastery over line and color...
Hajime Sorayama for his exquisite detail and skill...
And Leonardo for being so far ahead of his time.
:Edit: ya lets not get into off topic arguments here.... but jus a clarification...The man who gave a model for a flying machine in 16th century , on which a machine could not be made till the 20th...One by Sikorsky called the helicopter... can be behind his time....Jus maybe.

my favorite is Jan van Eyck, i just love his attention to detail and perspective. Other than him, Diego Rivera, Rembrandt, and most of the early and high Renaissance artists; again, beacause of those small details and attention that make a world of difference.
