First post here, so sorry if I’m in the wrong place. ^^;;

I’m having trouble finding a tutorial on drawing plus size men, and women. I’ve done a few google searches, and looked just about everywhere I could think of, but have turned up empty handed.

Can anyone help me?

1. Draw a "normal"-size person
2. Add fat

that's how nature does it! :D

to be a little more serious, though fat might hide structures superficially, it still hangs from a natural figure.

I've found that the best reference for "plus size" models tends to come from life/figure drawing classes... funny that.

Nature has nothing to do with the adding of fat. That’s ice cream your thinking of. :P

I’m aware there is a normal body under the fat, but I don’t fully understand how and where the fat grows and falls on the body, and where it does not.

Figure drawing classes would be helpful, but there are no places close to me that offer such classes.

Hey there, I am thinking the best way (especially since life drawing is a bit out of the way) to learn about fat and its form around the human body, would be to copy/ reproduce old master's works. I know off the top of my head Lucian Freud liked painting large nudes and Odd Nerdrum (one of my favorite artists) is a good inspiration for overweight reference. If you don't know any other artist's you can look around some of these sites.

That is a good idea, and very helpful links. Thank you, thediligent. I will look to the old masters you have named for the knowledge I seek. ^_^

Sara Simblet's book Anatomy for the Artist has a diagram on where fat deposits on the female form. But the best thing to do is just look at fat people. Men tend to have it deposit on the stomach ending abruptly just below the naval, the love handles, the chest to some degree and a little in the upper arms and inner thighs. Women usually have it deposit on the stomach going all the way down to the pubis (unlike men), the hips, thighs, butt, breasts, upper arms to a small extent also. You also must remember that the heads hands and feet are usually proportional to the size of the person. A heavier person will have chubbier hands and feet and a rounder face and possibly a double chin. Just observe, head out to a McDonnald's or some some other place where there are alot of overweight people and sketch.

Maybe try going to a public pool or a beach- I imagine you will see your share of people that fit into the categories you are looking for.

Then again, I notice your location is Cali so maybe not.
