I remember seeing this before... it's absolutely beautiful. The rendering on the flag and hair is amazing.

This is beautiful. Usually I just pass over thing with editorial in the title because more often than not it is a style that I don't find appealing. But I am very glad I ran with my whim to look at this piece.

Actually, if you had asked me, I would have guessed this was digital. Very vibrant.

Good stuff. I see you went to Paier. Was Tim O'brien teaching then?

Thanks all on your comments.
Ellwell: Tim O'brien was teaching then and yeh, of course, you can see the influence. I still keep in touch with him, actually saw him at the illustration conference in Philly last month. Do you know Tim?

Not only is it a very nice painting, but the subject couldn't be more appropriate and actual. I thought about Guantanamo at first (a pretty literal connotation, I suppose) but of course, it can be applied to many aspect of so-called Democracy-at-war.

May I ask in what context will it be printed?

Carnifex: I do have some tips on how I created this image. I am working on creating a couple tutorials that I will post on my website at a later date. Thanx for your interest

Yes, I know Tim through the Society of Illustrators. He did good by you. I can see an influence, but it's not overwhelming.

;) Thanks Elwell! I keep trying to improve and expand my abilities. Tim was an excellent teacher, he approaches it, I think, like a boxing coach. You know he's a boxer.
Are you an illustrator..if so I'd like to see your work. Give me a link.
Thankx again!

Phil

It's my rep's site, and needs massive editing and updating. You can also see stuff in Spectrum and the SI Annuals.

Tristan: I know your work well...excellent stuff.

I was approached by Tammy Shannon a couple of years ago regarding representation. Are you happy with things so far.

I'm surprised we've never met...I go to the Society functions from time to time.

Thanks el coro!
Yeh Tim's paintings in Time where always a good reason to pick up an issue. It's even more amazing to note that in many cases he had 24 hours to do a painting for them. He's crazy!

super.... I thought it was a photo at first... The head is just plain awe inspiring.

One crit: the guys right forearm is way underdeveloped compared to the size of his bicep...

Still a great image though!

I think you should add a little bit of a disfused glow around the top of the head where the hair is to soften it up a little. The figure kinda looks like he has been cut out and placed on a black background. A disfused glow around some of the highlights that border the BG could help fix that.

Nice work.
